The windows sparkle like gems in a ucen’s diadem, and seem as numerous as the acets in crystal. Wide yawning is the door- Way; countless are the columns; lofty and rial the balconies; vividly verdant the veran- dahs; and high above the topmost balustrade floats, self assentingly in the air, the banner of the stars and stripes. This is a hotel with a vengeance; but run not away with the impression that it is unique—a solitary mon- ster, like the Sphinx, the Grand Hotel du Louvre, or the Great Western Hotel, Padding- It has brothers and cousins and children as capacious, if not more so than itself, on either side, and up and down, as far as the eye can reach in the great transatlantic Boule- vard—the Parvarer House, the St. Hominy House, thé Golden Gate House, the Amalga- mated Squash Hotel, and other big sounding hostelries. Tho St. Boblink is a vast eating end drinking factery ; an eastern caravanse- rai opened by American enterprise; an Em- ror’s palace let out in room lots at three lars a day; a Vatican for voyagers. The ear of man has not heard how many the St. Boblink would accommodote at a pinch; and no one is in a position to dispute the bo: of Washington Mush, its landlord, (now tra: eling in Europe with a secretary, .a courie; tutor, a governess, and two ladies’ maids f his family.) that he could take the whole of ress in to board, provide beds in addition ¢ British House of Lords, if they felt in- clined to come over and see the workings of the American Constitution, and find, without much trouble, shake downs into the bargain for the House of Commons. If you are inclined todo the Sardanapalus, you can revel in splendor, and ruin yourself if you like ; but if you are but a simple, sen- sible, single traveler, who has travelled per- haps twelve hundred miles with no more lug- gage than a valise or a scanty carpet bag, you may board and lodge and enjoy your thou- sandth share of all the luxuries in this hotel palace for the moderate sum of three dollars, or twelve shilling and sixpence per diem There are even cheaper and not much less splendid hotels—but the St. Boblink is a first chop—an A One house. For your three dollars a day you have the run of all the public apartments, a noble bil- liard room, where you may win or lose dollar bills of or to excitable Southerners and Sena- tors in want of excitement, to content ; reading rooms, where the ten thou- sand newspapers of the Union, all printed on the largest paper in the small are spread on the green rooms, where you may taste the flavor of real Havanas, or luxuriate in the mastification of the fragrant cloak rooms; lavatories, conver- sation parlors and lounging balconies. I don’t know whether they have fitted up a whittling room at the Saint Boblink yet, but I dare say that convenience will be added to the estab- lishment on the return of Washington Mush, Esquire, from Europe. At the same time, perhaps, it would be as well to erect an apart- ment devoted to the national pastime of ex At present, for want of a special location, the whole palace is one huge spit- toon, which is inconvenient to foreigners. There are men whom you could not tempt with gold or jewels or trinkets for the Lord Mayor's bap uet, to say there was greater pleasure in life than playing with their children. Sugar and water and a tooth-pick will conteat some; @ cigar and cold toddy en the tiles others ; but for my part, I do not know more pleasant an- imal enjoyment, of the tranquil, meditative kind, than an American drink and a cigar, and my kief afterward. Yet, even these re- jouissances are transitory ; a melancholy bub- ling in the straw tells of the last drop of the fiscal agent. Then comes the empty glasses and payment and remorse. It is in the Saint Boblink House that ing an advocate of the Maine law, or a sitter at the feet of John B. The thing is gravely done—sternly, aaa solemnly. The drink is a duty as well as a mere relaxa- tion and refreshment. It is a part of the mis- sion of the sovereign people, and the list of American drinks should be hung up in the natural museum, along with the national tar- bucket, the national feather bed, the natienal revolver and bowie knife, the national Decla- tion of Independence, and the national and almighty dollar. I have no hesitation in sa: ing that the ta- ble d’hote at the Saint Boblink House is the best array of eatables in the whole world. In se re subtlety of the sauces and refine- ment of the flavoring may be surpassed b some European diplomatic chiefs, but od quantity and quality of the viands de, to adopt a native locution, whip all creation. For i a cian feast commend me to the Saint Bob! . Sing, muse, too, of its breakfast, with its ple- thora of strange but delicous fishes, and their hundred varieties of bread, hot and stale. Little, perhaps, save the conversion of the bed rooms into which single travelers are put, from comfortless, scanty, draughty dog holes, into decently furnished and moderately comfortable chambers, and save the abolition of punish- meut of that great nuisance, and curse, and scandal, the expectoration of tobacco juice. Come away from the Saint Boblink House, traveler, for we are wanted in Hurope again. By the time we return to the States the palace will have been burnt down and it up again, larger and handsomer than ever. ————— +__ Political Items. The anti-Fillmorites of the Fourth district of Mass, have elected John Newell delegate tothe National Convention, to assemble in New York on the 12th ef June. Jobn S. Phelps has been nominated for Con- ress in the Sixth Missouri district by the emocrats; J. M. Wines, by the Ame: » and P. B. Lawrenoe, by the Bentonites. In the Massachusetts House of Representa- tives on the 26th inst., a resolution was intro- duced instructing the Adjutant General of the State to furnish each of their Senators and Representatives in Congress with two of Oolt’s six barrel revolvers. The Macon, Ga., Citizen has the best author- ity for asserting that neither Hon. Howell Cobb, Hon. A Stephens, nor the Hon. R. Toombs will except the Democratic nomina- tion for the Vice Presidency, if tendered to them. A Fremont Club was organized at Boonville, New York, on the 25th inst. Resolutions were —— favorable to the nomination of Colonel ohn Charles Fremont for the Presidency. Governor Jones, of Tennessee, who is an old line Whig, says he is waiting for the result of the Cincinnati Convention before he determ- ines what course he will take. The Albany Register, the soft shell Know Nothing organ, says Fillmore will be the worse beaten man that ever had the misfortune to be placed behind the distance pole in a political race, and his prospects are growing worse and worse every day. Hon. James B. Clay addressed an eld line Whig meeting in Frankfort, Ky., on the 24th instant. The Chicago Democrat, Wentworth’s paper, says if the bard delegates are refused admis- sion to the Cine’ Convention, Fillmore stands the best chance of carrying New York, On the other hand, if the softs are admitted and a slavery entension ad it will be—then look out for the suocess of the anti-Nebraska candidate, particularly if Fre- mont is nominated. Judge John S. Brien has declined the honor Presidential of being a Know N. elector in Tennessee. He is in favor of Fillmore and Donelson, nevertheless. The Savannah Republican says that al- though in the calculations concerning the Cin- cinnati nomination Georgia is set down for Buchanan, yet there are many indications that her vote will be cast for Douglas.
