EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON CITY: SATURDAY ...00-0-.0arer00 May 24, 1866, 17> Advertisements should be handed in by 12 o’eloek, m., otherwise they may not appear until the next day, Soc : THE WEEKLY STAB, Now ready for delivery, contains a large amount of fresh, reliable, and highly inter- esting matter. Among its rich and varied contents will be found some fifteen columns of Washington News and Gossip, embracing ar- tieles upon the Washington Election bill, the Court of Claims, the Edie (Pa.) Know Nothing Council, the Crampton Issue, Internal Im- provements bill, the California Wagon Road, the President’s Vetoes, the Republican Nom- ination, the late Scenes in the Senate, Kansas Affairs, Land Office Decisions, List ® Patents, 4&c, &c Itcontains in addition a fall local budget, with personal items, and the latest telegraphic and mail intelligence up to the time of going to press; and also its usual choice selection of tales, poetry, &c. ———__<+e-+___ SPIRIT OF THE MORNING PRESS. The Jntelltgencer publishes with a commen- datory introduction, 2 communication depreca- ting the policy of refusing to accept Lord Clarendon’s last despatch as # settlement in full of the enlistment controversy. The edi- tor in another brief article, intimates that in view of the third vete of Internal improvement bdills, that was sent in yesterday, the Senate may forego the labor of the perfection of the dozen or more similar bills yet under con- sideration in their chamber. The Union, commending all of the “ decla- ration respecting maritime law,’’ embraced in the late treaty of peace (signed at Paris, April 16, 1856,) except that one which relates to privateering, argues against that one really with great force. The editor holds that when- ever Britain and the other parties to the treaty im question will agree that in ease of war their large standing navies shall not molest the merchantmen of the enemy, the United States will gladly agree to abolish privateer- ing. But not until then; as our many ships, capable of being instantly converted into pri- vateers, are really the naval reliance cf a country like ours. He also argues with suc- cess to show that putting a vessel undera “letter of marque,’’ is substantially commis- sioning her as a public armed ship. ee WASHINGTON NEWS AND GossIP Characteristic—Our talented, truthful, and ingenuous neighbor, who, it will be rec- ollected, pretty much got up the smashing Pope’s Nuncio roorback and the roorback saying that there were arms concealed in the Catholic churches in this city at the time of our last municipal election, and who has been, be- sides, the author of nearly every “‘ whopper” told among us for Know Nothing party pur- poses for a year or two past, is again at his his old work ; making “cock and bull’ sto- ries at a great rate. He is, doubtless, the real author of the “whopper” of large di- mensions printed in the last speech of Mr Winter Davis, wherein it is gravely alleged that the Government proscribes stone-cutters, &c., in this city, on account of their political opinions. This silly story is hardly worth the contradiction. It will trouble Mr. Davis vast- ly to prove the truth of what he said in that connection, we apprehend. We should like to have him essay to do so. Accusations of that sort are dog cheap, and without proof, are not worth newspaper room. Mr. Davis is utterly unable to substantiate the truth of his assertion in the case, it being without founda- tion. Our gentle, courteous and truthful neighbor yesterday whined over an alleged case of some Mr. E. W. who complains that his Know Nothingism has cost him the business of sup- plying the Washington Navy Yard with iren Now, if the Know Nothings were in power, we should like to know whether any man sworn to proseribe every mother’s son of them from any connection whatever with public employ- ment, would be continued for two or three years as the party from whom the Know Nothing authorities made purchases of any sort in open market? If our gentle and truthful neighbor will name the man, we will promptly show him, whoever he may be, to be an active Know Nothing partizan, and we will quote the obligation he has come under to proseribe every person not of his own po litical party. Our gentle and truthful neighbor, has also very recently concocted a story saying that the Secretary of the Navy is about to order the steamer Minnesota, for completion, down to the Norfolk Navy Yard, in order to take off from Washington at the time of the ap- proaching election a good batch of Know Nothing voters who aro working on ber. Our neighbor is a “born natural’ if he fancies that any body believes any such story on his assertion, after his well known connection with the Pope’s Nuncio roorback, the arms in Catholic churches roorback, this E. W. roor- back, and many other similar roorbacks con- cocted for Know Nothing political effect. Our talented and ingenuous neighbor’s, col- umns were yesterday further graced with original roorbacks as follows, viz: One say- ing that some Know Nothing hore had been offered $2,500 if he would leaye his party; a second one, saying that the office of Canal Commissioner had bean offered to a Know Noth- ing on the same terms; a third one, saying that $5,000 has already been assessed upon the De- partments to carry this cityon next Monday week. This last roorback was evidently thrown out as mere bait to induco Kuow Nothing gud- geons to replenish the Urgax’s empty coffers, Bot @ scintillaof truth is mixed up in those characteristic whoppers of our talented, trath- ful, and ingenuous Reighbor. From the ap- pearance of its columns, it is evident that the concern is living upon roorbacks, leon exists on air. P.8. Aday or two since, truthful neighbor, manufactureg a ing that some voter had been offe: no ‘ruth in it whatever. Edmund Burke, of New Hampshire, Again.— Yesterday, we took occasion to ex- hibit the Abolition face of Mr Edmund Burke, of New Hampshire, to our readers, as we bear that he designs going to Cigcinnati to endeavor to bring abguia Presidential nom- ination..‘> suit the views and potition of Dem- ceratic (Heaven save the mark!) politicians ef his school. To-day we give our readers a glimpse of his Know Nothing face, as da- a£ a came- our talented and story say- Ted a con- tract for supplying the Convent here with bread, on condition of sbandoning Know Nothingiem.
