=~=~=~=~=_—_—_—_—_——— EVENING STAR. “LOCAL, INTELLIGENCE. Anti-Kyow Notsixa Meeting.—Pursuant to public notice a large meeting of the Anti- Know Nothings assembled on last evening, at bos Saloon. The room was crowded at an early hour to its utmost capacity. On motion, Alderman Wm. F. Bayly, ofthe Second Ward, was appointed chairman, and RK H. Laskey and Jas. F. Haliday wera ap- pointed Secretaries. James M. Carlisle, Esq., was then intro- duced to the meeting, and addressed it in an able speech, directed chiefly against the doc- trine of religious intolerance, as advocated by the Know Notbi party. Mr. John Pettibone then offered the follow- ing resolutions, which were read and adopted with acclamation : Resolved, That the nomination of Dr. Wm. B. Magruder for the office of Mayor of the City ot Washington, by the Convention re- cently assembled for the purpose of nomina- ting a candidate, meets with our cordial and hearty approval. His long career of invalu- able public service in the city councils, sus taining as he has at all times, with ability and success, the interests of the whole city, without regard to locality, his high moral character, his personal and professional friendship for the poor man, practically evidenced on all occasions, his whole souled devotion to the at principles cf civil and religious liberty, rom the time they were first placed in jeop- ardy by the organization of the Know Nothing party to the present moment—all these point to him as the man for the crisis, and we there- fore pledge ourselves to constant and unceas- ing efforts in order to secure his certain triumph on the first Monday in June. Resolved, That the mismanagement of pub- lic affairs which has almost everywhere fol- lowed the success of the Know Nothing party has been severely felt here, and will continue to be feit in a still greater degree if they are continued in power. The business of ourcity has been neglected, its public improvements almost entirely suspended, its means squan dered, its accounts involved in great confu- sion, positions of profit unnecessarily mul mae salaries increased, and offices monopo- ized by members of the City Councils—fav- orites of the party in power; therefore, Ke- form is the only remedy for these evils, and we feel confident the people will secure it for us at the coming municipal election. Resolved, That the thanks of the people of this city are due to the Senate of the United States for the liberality which has always been displayed by that body towards us, as well as for their promptitude in passing the bill regulating elections; and whilst we re- gret that a measure so fair and just in its pro- visions has been emasculted and rendered par- tially ineffective by secret partizan influences, we indulge the hope that at another time a future Congress will so amend our system of suffrage as to relieve it from all its complica- tions, and secure to the legal voter full and undoubted a “are of bis rights. Resolved, That we reprobate, in most un- qualified terms, the stealthy and unlawful manner by which the present self-styled Board of Managers of the Washington Monument obtained porsession of that great national work—a work which, under the faithful man- agement of the old Board, was progressing to its completion, distributing annually thou- sands of dollars amongst our mechanics and laboring men, and whieh bid fair, when com pleted, to be one of the most beautiful orna- ments to our metropolis—but which, in the blighting bands of this new management has, by their own humiliating confession, proved an utter failure, and instead of being a monu- ment to the memory of the illustrious Father of his Country, stands, in its unfinished con- dition, a monument of shame and disgrace to the Know isaenin Lose Gen. Thos. F. Bowie, a representative in Congress from Maryland, was then called on, and addressed the meeting in an animated and eloquent manner. His argument waa ad- dressed against the principles of the Know Nothi: arty. Hon. Mr. Peck, of Michigan, next addressed the meeting, and reviewed at length the aati- American doctrines of the “American’’ party, and contrasted them with the principles which had built up the institutions of the country. Hon. A. G Brown, one of the Senators from Mississippi, and the chairman of the District Committee, was then introduced, and ad- dressed the meeting in an able and effective address. Hon. Thomas B. Florence, a representative from Philadelphia, was next introuuced to the meeting. Mr. F , after alluding to the meet- ing at Carusi’s Saloon, where, among others, the honorable gentleman was prevented from addressing a public meeting by the disciples of Sam, then delivered a stirring address, which was warmly received by the assembled multitude Mr F. alluded to Whig Phila- delphia, where two years ago the Know No things had 8,000 majority, have now been beaten 2.000, and culled on constitutional Whigs and Democrats to follow the example of the Quaker city. Hon. Mr. Davidson, of Louisiana, followed Mr. Florence in a brilliant address. Dr. Magruder, the candidate of the citizen’s convention, was called on and addressed the meeting. After Dr. Magruder had concluded, on mo- tion the piles hs were ordered to be pub- lished, and the meeting adjourned. A Misrerreseytation Corrected. — It having been said in the column; of our tal- ented, truthful, and ingenuous neighbor that, atthe recent Anti-Know Nothing meeting in the Sixth (Navy Yard) Ward, the English, Trish, and other monarcbical flags were fes- tooned around the room, a gentleman who as sisted in preparing the hall assures us that the story is utterly untrue. The fisgs used on that occasion, in connection with the Amer- jean ensign, w these of Nicaragua and Costa Rica, which the learned souls of the Organ did not know from ‘‘ English, Irish, and other monarchical’’ national emblems Never say “ blind Dutch and rgnorant Irish”’ after this Court or Craiws —Yesterday. Mr. Law- rence concluded the argument in the case of Robert Graham. In the cases of William M Ryer, claiming compensation for inoculation of indians in California, and of E. B. Cham- berlin and others, heirs of Captain Joshua Chamberlin, of the revolutionary army, claim- ing bounty land and half pay, testimony was ordered to be taken. The case of Joseph White, claiming a balance due him as navy nt for the port of Baltimore, was submitted without argument Larcesy.—Julia Bressnaham, L. Kelly, Abby Davis, and Norah Nowland, who were charged with the larceny of dry goods from Clagett, Newton, May & Co., were all com. mitted to jail by Justice Daniel Smith, but the three first named were subsequently re- leased ou bail to appear at the Criminal Court. About ten dollars’ worth of the goods have been recovered. Sertixe Trars.—Yesterday some females ‘e engaged in removing bricks from the ement on Four-and-half street near Mary- d avenue. John P. Van Ness—commence to hold a fair and festival to enable them to pay the balance due for their church building. which also embraces accommodations for the fine fe- male academy they propose to have there. Their dtoomftation is Protestant Methodist, though all of all sects ans the neigh- borhood have contributed to the erection of the building. ‘ y The ladies who have the fair and festival in charge are young, beautiful, eful, fresh, nad blooming country girls, each with a heart as big as a hogshead, and manners uncontam- iauek by the frigidity and undue formaliti of city associations. They have provided ev rything necessary to make their entertain- ment attractive, usually forsale on such occa- sions. The place is about eight miles from Washington, as many from Alexandria, and five from Geo: wn. Ball’s Cross Roads ison the way from either city. The roads jast now are in fine condition, and the even- ing visitors from the cities will have brilliant moonlight to cheer them going and returning. No more delightful moonlight excursion than @ rapid drive up there and back again can be conceived of just now. They'll surely have fine times there every evening next week ; so we advise allto go whocan possibly make it convenient. Coxtempr or A MaGistRate.—®his morn- ing, J. F. Neidfeldt entered the office of Jus- tice Daniel Smith, where acivil case against a friend of his was under consideration. The Justice gave a judgement that did not suit Neidfeldt, who had nothing to do with the case. Neidfeldt remarked that the magistrate did not know his business, and he would make him know it. A warrant was issued for him and he was arrested. A commi ment to the county jail for two days was written, but the prisoner finding that the case was closing, suddenly became penitent, and by begging = apologising inauced the Justice to jet him © A CHANGE ann A Rerormation.—Asa proof of the change that has taken place in regard to the order, &e , observed at the Fish Wharf, we may mention that not one single case of a breach of the laws has been brought before the Mayor, as occurring at that place, during the past season. During the first year of Mayor Wise’s term of office, he received about four hundred dollars in fines for the use of the Corporation, from delinquents brought before him from the Fish Wharf. This year nota dollar! This is, indeed, a reformation.—A/e7. Gozette. Dear Mercvury, keep your temper, do! peers ft it was unjust, considering your straightened verbal circumstances, to expect common sense from you; but now confiden- tially, dear M., don’t you think that a very disreputable trick of yours to try to father ail your ridiculous blunders. teadyisms, and uerilities upon the unfortunate “ typos?’ Be a good Mercury, keep your temper, and you may continue to steal from the Star as much ag you like. Sent to Jam, &c¢—A few days sinco a white man named Brannan, stole a lot of coin from acolored man. ‘he coin was on a cord attached to his pocket, and the thief passing near seized the cord and broke it. White persons witnessed the operation and had Bran- nan arrested, and sent to jail by Justice Offutt The same magistrate held two boys, Lewis Long, colored, and Dennis Nowland, white, to security for peace for fighting on the strects, and endangering the lives of passengers. W Jarboe in the recent affair at the Nevy Yard, were consigned to the grave. The funeral procession was very long. The Anacostia Fire Company, of which the deceased was a member, and the Ameiican Hook and Ladder Company, were out, accompanied by a fine band of music Tue Marker, though rather damp and un- comfortable, presented quite a lively appear- ance this morning. The large supply of veg- etables was displayed to attract the attention of purchasers, and early in the day the stalls were really beautiful A variety of articles from distant regions were displayed in the vegetable and fish markets, and were suld speedily at fair prices. Tux quict streets of Georgetown were con- siderably enlivened on yesterday by the ap- pearance of the Georgetown College Cadets in full uniform, accompanied by Weber's ex- cellent brass band. They marched through the town on their way to * the Villa,’ a sum- mer retreat belonging to the College, and situated some two or three miles north of this place. The maneuvers were al! performed with an ease and grace which was astonishing, in a corps consisting of youtbs, all under twenty years of age. The march tothe Vil'a is said to have been a very pleasant one, and in truth could not well have been other wise, as they received at almost every door and window the soldier’s greatest recompense in time of peace, the ladies? smiles, On reaching their point of destination they found everything prepared for their comfort, that the care of the faculty could provide. The dinner, which from all accounts was excellent, was followed by a short farewell address from Capt. Garnett, and numerous toasts ‘all pps in goodly cups’’ of the strongest—lemonade. After a very pleasant day they took up their line of march for College, where they arrived without interruption, save from affrighted horses. In coacnuiiea it is but due to Capt. Garnett, Lieuts. Dougherty, Price, and others, to say they have brought the company to a high state of discipline. And hoping they may ever prosper, 1 am their well wisher, May 16th. Tommix. Warcn Rervrss.—George Handy, colored, roving about after hours; work house thirty days. One of those unpleasant cases, a vexed husband versus a drunken wife, was laid be- fore the Captain last night.
