He said he had fought, bled and died for the country in the War of 1812, and often since. Both were old soldiers; both claiming —— and both drunk the same night. hey were discharged by Justice Hollings- head on their promise to leave the city. | ADVERTISEMENT. Auiey’s Mart Bacs.—Mr. Editor: These bags have been floating for three weeks in the tank west of the Capitol, filled with paper. The House Committce on Post Offices examined the papers onthe seventh day, and found them perfectly dry ; also, they were examined the fifteenth day with the same result. It seems strange to me that these bags are not adopted into the mail service. The extra ex- pense, which is the only objection, is probably less than the annual loss by the exposure of letters and papers to wet in the bags now in use. These new bags are also life-preservers, and would save many lives on board our mail- boats. The people would justify an expendi- ture ten times as great as would be necessary to bring them into use. Vinpex. Wasaineron, April 21, 1856, It [ADVERTISEMENT. Mr. Epitor : Having been accused and sus pected of being connected with a secret polit- ical organization known as the «‘ Know Noth- ing,’’ I desire, through the columns of your widely distributed paper, to say to all who have thus accused me, that the accusation is FALSE; and to those who have og ree me, that they do me great injustice, for I have never been connected, or acted with, orin any of its measures or proclivities been in favor of the Know Nothing organization. My first vote was cast for the Democratic or Union ticket, at one of the municipal elections of Washington city, and ever since 1 have voted for the candidates of the Democratic party, and am at present a member of the Jackson Democratic Association of this city. I have always looked upon secret political societies as being detrimental to the best interests of our country, and to the liberties of the peo- ple; and especially have I looked upon this party as one that is calculated to disorganise; and in its every element has appeared to me the seeds of discord, danger, and everything that can politically destroy our nationality, and wake us to the other nations of the world a bye-word and a mark of scorn. and soon bury us in the darkness of oblivlon, being only known as once existent. in closing, let me warn all that I shall hold any @ne responsible who hereafter charges me with any connection with the Know Nothing organization, as I consider it a libel on my name and character.
