EVENING STAR. LOCAL INTELLIGENCE, DARING BURGLARY. ARREST OF THE GUILTY PARTIES. PROPERTY IDENTIFIED. A very daring burglary was committed jast night upon the premises of Mr. For- rest, who keeps a shoe store near the corner of Twelfth street and Pennsylvania avenue, and at the same time upon the rooms above occupied by Mr. Hoffar, dentist. Mr. Forrest bas been missing goods from his establishment for the last nine months, and for a few weeks . @young man by the name of Demain, who is em 5 pe in the haaeiirioy | establish- ment of Mr Hare, next door, has been sleep- ing upon the premises of Mr. Forrest, and to avoid suspicion on the part of the burglars, bss been in the habit of passing through from the engraving establishment by an opening in the wall. . Between one and two o’clock this morning be was aroused by a noise up stairs, and, get- ting up, he watched for some time, pistol in band, but hearing nothing more he concluded be was mistaken, and went to sleep again. Soon after he was awakened aga’. by a noise at the window of the back passagu, and saw a man open and enter it, followed by three others. Demain sought for his pistol, but in the hurry and excitement of the moment could not find it; and, fearing for his life, unarmed, he concealed himself under some leather in acloset. The burglars passed into the front shop, and, striking a light, proceeded to haul out the drawers and examine the goods at their leisure. They had a large bag with them to carry off their spoils. But their operations were interrupted at this point by Watchmen Mockabee, and Elliot, who, seeing the light shining through the windows, suspected something wrong, and made their way through the windows after Elliot had gone to Forrest’s and brought him to the store. The burglars immediately |e out their lights and attempted to escape. But one of them was arrested, viz: Washington Naylor. Mr. Forrest arrested him, assisted by the watchmen. Maylor was found laying upon the floor of Mr Hare's back ee g About 5a. m., Capt. Bireh admitted Naylor to bail under the circumstances we describe below. a afterwards a search was made of the house of John Ray where Naylor was found. The latter refused to permit the search to be made without a warrant; which was obtained. Naylor crawled out from un- der the house and went off. John Ray and Henry Croggier, two hands employed in Naylor’s blacksmith shop, were arrested in the house. This gang prove to be the villians who robbed Mr. Hoffer’s jewelry store in the Star buildings not long since, and then set fire to our extensive premises to conceal their minor crime. Above the spot where they made the fire is Mrs. Beck’s large boarding house in which perhaps forty persons were sleeping at the time. Among the stolen goods recovered this morning is a large portion of the proceeds of that robbery, all of which have been iden- tified. The same gang from the character of the stolen goods found on their premises are doubtless the perpetrators of many other acts of arson and burgiary committed in our midst of late. In fact they seemed to have entered upon a wholesale career of arson and pillage. At the establishment of Mr A. Hoffar over the shoe store, which they also entered last night, they stuffed the partition with combus- tibles, and everything had been put in train for setting fire to the building. The chief of the night watch, early this morning, released Nailor on bail, on own resognizance, for $500, and the bond of his brother-in-law, Mr. John Hammack, who keeps, or is engaged in a restaurant on Penn- sylvania Avenue, rear the corner of Fifteenth street, in the old Mansion House. His bonds were for his appearance this evening at six o'clock. This proceeding is, to say the least of it, most extraordinary, in view of the com- —— of the proof of the charge en which aylor was arrested, which the justice had before him, of the utter worthlessness of the bail in the estimation of the public at least, and of the small amount required for Naylor’s aypecrnee under such a charge. ‘or years past the police have believed him guilty of selling free negroes into slavery from this District, and have in vain sought proof to justify his arrest under such acharge. The subject-matter of his release under the cir- cumstances should and will doubtless be tho- roughly investigated by the Mayor. By 11: a. m. to-day, officers were again in search of Washington Naylor. Under the au- thority of other warrants, some of them pro- ceeded toa farm in Maryland, near the Dis- trict line, where they had reason to believe he had gone. On the premises of Ray was found a pretty full assortment of burglar’s tools, consisting of skeleton keys, lock-picks, screw-drivers, bits, nipper:, de , &e. The goods were of a pretty miscellaneous character, consisting of shoes, boots, cigars, cloths, pistols, clocks, dressed sheep skins, bookbinders’ muslin for — of bocks, tobacco, vestings, carpet-bags, c., &e. Mr. Bushrod M. Reed has identified some of these articles as being a portion of property stolen from him on December 23, to the amount of $250. T. G@. Forrest, who has lost property to the value of $900, Michael Hoffer, jeweller, $160, and G. W. Hinton to the value of $800, have identified property. ME. Eckloff, iden- tifies a piece of cassimere as stolen from him. Nicholas Singer identified boats, W. T. Be- dinger identified tools and a violin bow. Jo- seph Anker, who was robbed last winter of boots to the value of $70, identifies property. About 12 m. another load of goods was brought to the Guard house from Ray’s house to be identified. Ray and Croggin were committed for farther hearing by Captain Birch Much credit is due to Watchmen Mockabee, Allen and Elliott, for their vigilance and promptness in the execution of their duty. Taz New Tarvcx of tho American Hook acd Ladder Company, we are requested to Bion will not be put in s* vo until Monday Opura Exciteuent.—The sale of seats for ‘“‘Somnambula’’ for Monday night is going on rapidly, and all the indications are that the season of six nights will be a most brilliant success. We hope so, most sincerely, both for the credit of the musical taste of the city and for the sake of the werthy and enterprising management of the Theatre, who have shown such liberality in catering for the amusement of our citizens. We learn that the operas will be ee with all possible completeness, and with unusual care paid to details and ac- cessories. We see by the Louisville and teeeat el pers that the Pyne and Harrison troupe had a remarkably successful tour in that section of the Union, and we cannot doubt that a Wash- ington public will give them an equally cor- dial reception. New ArtiLteri Company —We are glad to learn that a movement is making to estab- lish what is so much needed in Washington, viz: a new Artillery company. At present there is no such company in the District, and the want of one is felt for the completion of the regiment, and for the purpose of firing national salutes. A meeting is called of those favorable to forming such a company on Mon- day evening, 14th inst., at 73 o’clock, at American Hall, on Seventh street, and it is hoped that the call will be fully responded to, Bataine.—On Wednesday afternoon, a number of boys were bathing in the Washing- ton canal. They were not afraid of cold water. and cared but little for persons passing by. We now give persons warning, that bathing in certain parts of the Anacostia, Potomac, Rock Creek, Tiber, and the canal, between eun rise and sun set, is prohibited by the Corporation law, and every offender is liable to a fine of two dollars or imprisonment ten days in the workhouse. Musica Beotnines.—-There are many new musical associations springing into exis- tence in our city since the spring has opened; quartette clubs, chorus parties, &c. The old associations are improving, and efforts are making to increase the number of their per- formers. We may expect to hear them before long in some one of the sacred oratorios, or se- lections from the works of the great composers. The coming of Parodi, and the English Opera Troupe, we hope, will increase their zeal. Court or Crains.—Yesterday, the case of H GQ. Carson, administrator, vs. The United States, was argued on the facts by Mr. Bax- ter for the claimant, and by the Solicitor, for the Government. This was a claim for the ayment ot a “ final-settlement certificate,’’ kz Benjamin Stelle, commissioner for set tling debts due by the United States in the State of Pennsylvania. The certificate was dated January 5th, 1784, and was for the sum of $4,180 56, with interest. Tse Cincus.—The large ampitheatre was filled again last night to its capacity, and the erformances went off with augmented eclat e regret not having space to speak more particularly of the graceful Hernandez, the dashing Robinson, the transcendent Magilton, and all the other brilliant equestrian stars, there congregated, and advise all to go and see for themselves. Warca Returys.—Aside from the burglary cases there was but one person in the cells, John Brown, drunk and disorderly in the cir- cus, dismissed. Lodgers few. Drs. Hunter & Williams, Physicians for Diseases of the Lungs, 52 North Charles street, Baltimore. The practice of Drs. Hunter & Wituiaus is confined exclusively to the treatment of Chronic Diseases of the Throat and Lungs by Medicated inhalation, and the success that has attended their labors is sufficiently well known. It has demonstrated not only that Bronchitis, Asthma, Catarrh and Granular Sore Throat may be permanently cured but that Consumption in all its stages is acurable disease, and that the di pplication of remedies, by means of inhalation, to the seat of the malady, instead of giving them by the stomach, (always overtaxed and delicate in these diseases, ) must hereafter be regarded by the profession as the only rational and scien- tific mode of treatment. Parties unable to visit the city may be treat- ed by correspondence—medicine, instruments, &c., being sent to them by express. In order to obtain a proper statement of such cases, 2 form of questions has been prepared, which will be forwarded by letter. Dr. Hoxter or Dr. Witttams will visit Washington on the 12th and 29th of each month. The next visit will be on Saturday, the 12th inst. Great Fire in P ParcaDEnenta, April 11.—At about mid- night last night, a fire broke out in the upper partof the Artisan Buildings, situated in the rear of Chestnut and Fourth streets, and was not put a stop to until their destruction was total. The building formed a hollow square, and was five stories in height. Every portion of it was occupied as workshops, the machinery of which was driven by an eighty horse engine in the basement. Duval, lithographer, oecupied one of tho floors, and sustained a loss of $100,000, on which there is insurance to the amount of $30,000. He had forty steam presses and an immense stock of stones, including the litho- graphs for Commodore Perry's account of the Japan Expedition, for the Government, the plates of which, valued at $6,000, were all complete, and ready to be sent off. The other occupants were: Watts, silver- smith, loss $3,000, uninsured ; Gaskells, book- binder, loss very heavy; @. W. Simmons & Brother, jewelers, loss $20,000, insured for $3,000; C. & C. P. S. Camp, lithographer, loss $8,000, insured for $2,000. The fire spread with so much rapidity that searcely anything was saved, except from the lower floors. The Bear United States Hotel adjoined the burning building, and its destruction seemed inevitable, and the boarders fied; but the damage from fire was slight, though it was flooded with water. [SECOND DESPaTcR.) Messrs. Robb, Pile & McIlroy printers, also occupied a portion of the building destroyed, which was owned by Hulings Cowperthwaite, Esq , valued at $60,000, and covered by in- surance. Messrs. Cowperthwaite & Co., booksellers, had $12,000 im stock among the various print- ing and binding establishments—mostly cov- ered by insurance. The aggregate loss is supposed to be $200,- 000 Flakes of fire ignited the roof of the old Masonic Hall, on Third, above Spruce street, which was somewhat damaged. This property was recently sold and was unoccupied. Mrs. Margaret Christie, an invalid lady, occupying a house adjoining the United States hotel, died during the fire, from fright. Baltimore Markets.
