EVENING STAR. Equestrian ‘Coxcress.—-Coming, home come to town, is the great Railroad coming. ~ with music and banners, and armoured pera and masts, pantomimists, hurdle jown:, and all that vast array of eatin 4 Sich has made the Circus enter- tainment of Messrs. Spalding & Rogers so famous = Another candidate for equestrian suprema- cy, (and the atest of all, if the world’s esti- mate is reliable) James Hernandez, is entered fox the price at the circus tournament. Her- nandez left America three years ay Saleen comparison the best rider then » and during his absence, he has far eclipsed every- thing in England, France, and the Continent generally. n bis return, young Hernandez. loaded with the laurels of his European cam- psign, finde his claims for supremacy ques- tioned by young Robinson who has matured during his visit abroad. There is no dispute amongst the profession that Hernandez and Robinson, the two competitors in horseman- ship now here. are the best two equestrians in the world, and the strife cannot fail to be in- teresting. . Washington is thronged with equestrians, gymnasts, clowns, and musicians who make retensions to superiority in their respective epartments, and the throng naturally in- cludes the very best only, sinee ordinary skill could scarcely hopetosucceed The unusual spectacle of the living champions of every branch of the circus collected in one ring, will probably never again be presented in this city. Opp Fatiow’s Foxgrat —There was a large tarn out of Odd seer re on the occasion of the funeral of Richard G. Pardy. Columbia Lodge, by gargs mem- bers of the Grand Lodge and of the Encamp- ment, followed the remains of their deceased brother to Glenwood Cemetery. The proce:- sion was marshaled by Mr. Wm H. Nalley, and was preceded by Esputa’s full band The funeral sermon was by Rev. Mr Samsor, and the Chaplain, Mr W. G. Bond, read the solemn ritual at the vault. Mr Anthony Buchly, the undertaker, deserves especial credit for the perfection of the funeral ar- rangements. The hearse used on this occasion was en- tirely new, from Mr. Buchly’s est» blishment, and demonstrated what our Washington me- chanics are capable of turning out in the way of good and tasty workmanship. P. P. P.—We are particularly requested to call attention to the advertisement headed P.P.P., to be found under the head of “Wants.” A gentleman frequently visits Washington, and will do so on Thured next, April 10th. to buy anything the inhabitants bave to sell, giving a fair price for the same. He especially purchases old books, standard, miscellaneous, law, medical, curious, &c , by the volume or library; and for some scarce works he offers a high price. All having old books littering about their houses, perhaps unused or not looked at for years, and often considered as useless lumber, may dispose of them to advantage by addressing as adver- tisement directs. Natroxsan Tagatre.—The fair beneficiary Miss Agnes Robertson, had a fine benefit on Saturday night, and the performances went off handsomely, a/sett they were gone aces with for the most part by candle-light. The ag took its time to go out in the midst of oureicault’s highly finished personation of Sir Charles Coldstream in ‘‘Used Up,’’ but Bourcicault, vith ready wit, availed himself of the accident to mske a hit ortwo which brought down the house, and so carried of the farce with eclat. Next week, the enterprising management of the National, will afford the citizens of Wash- ington an opportunity of seeing and hearing theceleb Pyne & Harrison, English Opera Troupe. ArrivaLs —Rey. Daniel E. Reese and Rev. A. Cookman were in this city arama Mr. Reese was formeriy the pastor of the Metho- dist Protestant church on Ninth street, and iz very popular among his sect. tie He is now sta- at Charleston, 8. C., but is suffering affection of the throat that prevents eh at present. Mr. Cookman is a . @. Cookman, who was lost in the steamer President some years ago. He is intimately acquainted in Washington, and his friends were glad to see him in the pulpit formerly occupied by his father. Mr. Cook- man preached yesterday at the Wesley Cha- pel, and among other distinguished hearers there congregated wenoticed President Pierce. Free Fient—Mas Fieat, Doe Ficut—We might say dog fight only; but as they all came off about the same time, near Critten- den’s brick yard, yesterday, the Sabbath af- ternoon, we had as well mention all. The dog fight occurred first; then came the man fight nd an offer to “‘lick any man in the crowd for twenty-five cents,” which produced the free fight. We are told that it is a neigh- borhood that might be visited occasionally by the police. None of the gang were arrested, though the brown jug had assisted greatly to make a general arrest easy. Accipent.—On Saturday, Mr. Lewis, a huckster in the Centre Market, was severely injured by the starting of his horse. He had been feeding the horse, and had taken off the bridle to allow him to eat. The horse sud- denly started, and Mr. Lewis clung to his ma id was dragged in that position from the market space over Seventh street bridge Mr. Lewis was picked up by some persons near by and taken to a house near the canal. His head was badly cut, and the physician states that he was injured internally. Sriverse CLasses.—We would call attention to the advertisement in another column of Mr. William Palmer, who proposes establish- ing singing classes in a more effective manner thaa has hitherto been practised. Mr Palmer is too well and favorably known in our com- munity to need any recommendation at our hands, but we will add that we think his plan of dividing his pupils into small classes—as soprano, mezzo soprano, and contralto voices, & very judicious one. Avaagaus or Fine —Saturday night the com- anies were called out by a false alarm of fire, but they speedily returned with their appa- ratus t night another false alarm was given, which did not end so quietly. A colli- sion occurred between members of two compa- mies on the Avenue near Twelfth street. t was rather unfortunate that the Auxiliary Guard were answering to their roll-call when the difficulty occurred. t Conpucr —Yesterlay, a crowd of re traveling about in the Smithso- nian grounds, behaving very improperly, and using profane and indecent language when ladies were near enough to hesr their re- marke. If such persons cannot behave them- selves properly they should be cast out of all public places. Taisity Fain at Opp Fectows’ Haut con- tinues open, it will be seen, only to night and to-morrow night. This fair justly deserves the liberal patronage it has received both for the praiseworthy object in view by the ladies who get it up, and on account of the variety and Coa of the articles offered for sa‘e. A Dispcts Settiep —Yesterday, Captain Birch was sent for to settle a difficulty between two families of respectable colored persons. The Captain beard their statements, and held all hands to security for peace, aud they left huis office highly pleased with bis decision. Gas Licuts —The lights at the hotels, on the streets, and in several churches, expired rather suddenly last night without notice hav ing been given to supply candles. This has occurred two or three nights in succession. Mansgr Taigvas —Persons who employ thers to carry their baskets when filled, ould be careful to employ those who are Knowa tethem. Ygs aut Gas !—The idea that all the consumers of that article that have been com- pelled, night after night, to close their places of business, thereby incurring heavy losses and debarred the pleasure on their arrival at their residences of a well lit fireside, believe the representations of some of the employees of the **Gas Company,” that the present de ranged state of the «‘as”’ was solely attrib- utable to the action of the frost upon the coal— this one reason, as assumed, spread before the world would not speak volumes in favor of the saneness of Washington gas consumers, (if believed by them,) but, to thecontrary, would lead one to believe that they have never seen agaslight. Indeed, we fear we are striking very close to the truth judging from the ight (when any) in making this assertion et the proper officers, whoever they may be, I presume the Commissioner of Public Buildings to have some say, notice the stran- ger groping his way from some one of our Ho- tels (which he has just left in total darkness) in search of the National Theatre, and after being directed by dozens of passers-by; when he arrives at the spot there is not sufficient ‘*Gas’’ to show him that such a building does oreverdid standthere. In connexion with the Theatre subject and ‘‘Gas’’ we take the liberty of saying that on Saturday night Jef- ferson and other performers publicly do- nounced the manner in which they and their audience had been treated by this ‘‘ Monopo- Certainly the members of the two Houses of Congress with the truth of this nuisance before their own eyes will speedily grant a new charter and enable us to have that great —— Licar. t ADVERTISEMBNT. Gas.—Mr. Edttor: The universal com- pat against the Gas Company you must ave heard, andin your own establishment must feel the annoyance. The recent card published by the Superintendent, accounting for bad gas and no gas at all, is but a poor excuse. The idea that becauso the company have poor coal on hand they must use it be- fore getting another supply, is no more excuse than one of us should use bad beef because we have been cheated and have it on hand You never hear of such excuses from gas com panies in other cities. Is coal so far off that it takes weeks and months to obtain a supply? The anneyance felt by all the hotels, to say nothing of private consumers, by the gas be- ing turned off at six o’clock in the merning, and not let on until after dark in the evening, is cause for real complaint. There is a peti- tion now before the Committee on the District of Columbia, for a charter fora new company, and were it brought before Congress, I think no argument in its favor would be so conclu- sive as a mere reference to the present man- agement of the existing company. 1t Horen Keepers. Gas.—We have made inquiries as to the inadequate supply of gas for the last few nights, and find the causes to be, frst, in the coal received of late, which on account of ex- posure, probably, is of less strength than usual, though costing the eame price; second, the high winds from the 20th of March to the 3d instant, blowing without an hour’s cezsation from one quarter prevented the chimney fron: drawing, and consequently, no heat could be gotten up on the benches, and the coal re- mained unmelted in the retorts. The officers and employees of the Company are working day and night to remedy these unavoidable but unfortunate mishaps, and from the indus- try shown we feel confident that a few days will put everything to rights again. The loss to the Company is as great as the annoyanze to its consumers. lt chelor’s Hair Dye.—Gray, tant'y to a Beautifal and Natu- val Brown or Black, without the l:ast injary to Hair or Ski~.
