EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON CITY: THURSDOAY........0++..-+.March 27, 1856, SPIRIT OF THE MORNING PRESS. The Intelligencer in commenting on the lately published cfiicial opinion of the Attor- ney General upon the British Enlistment question, ssys : “* This paper of the learned Attorney Gen- eral, we need scarcely say, is marked by the research and legal acumen which characterize the official pr ‘tions of his pen, and indi- cates thet he has brought to the treatment of this topic the powers of a mind long trained in legal studics, and of an indefatigable ac- tivity which sbrinks from no labor of inquiry. We have not had time to give this elaborate opinion that careful perusal which it is enti- tled to, from its importance as a State paper and from the distinguished ability of its au- thor. We hope, at some convenient day, to find reem for its insertion in our columns, when we may alse avail ourselves of the occa- sion to offer such comments of our own upon its arguments ard conclusions as it may ap- pear to call for.” The Union philosophizes on the hollowness of abolition professions of devotion to the in- terests of the colored race, and explains the fact that that the mass of the colored people comprehend that they are better off among slaves and slavcholders than immediately under the tender mercies of the abolitionists themselves; and hence their indisposition to flock to the North, where, according to aboli- tion aceount’, they are so much honored and loved. C57O—_—__ So WASHINGTON NEWS AND GOss!P, The Nicaragus Embroglio.—Much inter- est is felt among the public men now here relative to the information which will soon be transmitted to the Senate in answer to that body’s recent call on the President for the facts involved in the affair between Walker and the Transit Company. It is undorstood that the Senate are anxious to protect the rights and interests of the Ameri cans whose property Walker hasseized. Ifit shall turn out that the Company, as a corpora- tion, have not had complicity in Walker's usaryatinof the government of Nicaragua— that toe emplicity charged upon it was, as now alleged, the surreptitious work of the agents for their ships in New York and San Franciseo for their own imiividual benefit as against the interests of their employers, we think it safe to say, that the case of the com- pany will receive every attention that the Sen- ate and Executive branch of the Government canaccordtoit. Walker being in power and having thus witbia his clutches near $1,000 000 worth of ite property, the company was com- pelled to do nothing in Nicaragua against his government. If it is shown that it merely acted towards him there, as towards any other one of the parties who have been temporarily in power there, the case (with the other re- quisite mentioned above) will probably be promptly taken in hand by the authorities bere, and as prompt!y pushed, until indem- ification for the past and security for the fu- ture be cbtained, past peradventure. We draw this conclusion from the unanimity of opinion which the public men outside of the Administration with whom we have conversed on the snbject, express upon it. They are very seldom in error when agreeing on any such poiat; aud we have therefore every rea- son to rely on their judgement in this case Arrant Humbugs —We take the following from the report of the Albany Argus and At- las of the proceedings of a late meeting ona Sunday, in s church in New Haven, Connec- ticut, to raise means to help a party about to start from thence to Kansas. under the auspi- ces of the New England Emigrant Aid Society : PROF. SILLIMAN RECEIVES SUBSCRIPTIONS. Prof Sitliman, of Yale College, then rose ard said that he did not hope Sharp's Rifles would be put to the fullest use of which they are capable; but self-defence, especially in the cause of Freedom, isasacred duty He de- precated the necessities of the time which de mand such precaution on the part of settlers in Kanms, but he believed in meeting man- fully the present exigencies, bad as the: might be. He said he desired to head the list for the procurirg of a number of weapons of defence for the party setting out, and that therefore Mr. Lines might put down on the paper,“ B Silliman one fftien rifle.” ag price of a rifle is $25 | Russell and Rev. Mr. Dutton rose both atonce. Mr Russell speaks first: “Put me down for one.” Rev. Mr. Dutton (Pastor of the Church)— One of the deacons of this Church, Mr. Har- vey Hall, is going out with the Company, and I, as his pastor, desire to present to him a Bible avd a Sharp’s rifle. [Great applause. | F. P. Pie—I will give one Stephen D. Pardee -I will give one for my- self, and also qne for my wife ! Mr. Beecher—I like to see that; it is a stroke right and left! [Great laughter.] Charles Ives—Put me down for three. Thomas R. Trowbridge—Put me down for four! {Continued laughter | Dr J. R. Howe—I will subseribe for one. A gentleman said that Mies Mary Dutton weuld give one. Dr. Stephen @ Huabbard—One. Mr. Beecher here stated that if twenty five could be raised on the spot, he would Pledge twenty-five more from Plymouth church— fifty being a sufficient number for the whole peel {Clapping of hands all over the jouse. Professor Silliman now left Mr. Beecher to speak for the bid, and sat down to enjoy tue occasion Mr. Killam—I give one. Mr. Beecher—Kil/am —That’s a sigvificaat a5 in connection with Sharp’srifle. | Laugh- ter Professor W. A. Norton—One for me. Mr. Vining—Anotber for me! Mr. Moses Tyler—I will pledze one Sharp’s rifle from the puntor class in Yale College! [Great applause | Professor Sillimon (rising in his seat and sweeping the gallery with his eye)—There are four classes in Yale College! {Immense sen- sation | Heury Trowbridge—One! Joba G North—One! Mr. Beecber—I think Kansas will now know that there is « North! (Great applause. } Wikiam Kingsiey—One fer Lucius L Oimsted—One. Mr. Dunlap—I wiil pledge one for the se maior class in Yale College! It was now ascertained that instead of tweny-five twenty-seven rifles had been sub- seribed, the cost of which, together with the amount received at the door for admission fees, made the collection for Kansas in the North Church one thousand dollars. This Professor Silliman, is him of Yale, who bas taken occasion to render it certain that that venerated college will not again have entered in its classes a single student from any other slaveholding State, except Delaware; at least until its affairs pass out of the hands of such persons as this Mr. Silly-man. The Mr. Beecher is, of course, Henry Ward, of that ik. Of this affair the New York Day Book dircorses very properly thus wise : ., “Beecher thinks Killam or “* Kill-them,”” is a good rame His jo unded well, no doult, to the erezy fanatics around him, but we would ask, in ali seriousness, how’ this Reverend gentleman would Sppear at the bar of Heaven with such jokes fresh from his lips?
