LOCAL INTELLIGENCE, Eastsr Scxpar.—This interesting and sig- nificant nigh festival of the church was cele- prated yesterday with absorbing ceremonies at the Catholie and Episcopal churches of the city. The celebration of the day is universal throughout Christendom, in eommemoration of Cbrist’s resurreetion from the dead and as- cension to Paradise. Easter is so called from the Saxon word oster, to rise, or, a8 some wri- rs suppose, from one of the Saxon godesses, led Easter, whe was worshipped at this sea- ss. of the year. The fine musical perform ances drew an unprecedented audience to St. Matthew's Church. The alleys and passages of the church, as well as the seats, and indeed all the steps and sprnseshes to it, were closely crowded atamearly hour The colored peo- ple of them who happened to come a little late, were completely crowded out of their seats by the eager rush of white tors. Immediately after the tolling of the last bell, the orehestra and organ, under Mr. Palmer's conductorship, performed a beauti- ful selection from the Stzh2t Mater, arranged for the Germania Society, by Prof. Lenschow. The mass then proceeded with the usual solemnity attending it, and in which the vo- -alists vied with the instrumental performers in carrying out the sublime ideas of the great compeser, Hummell. The whole mass was excellently performed, as well as the inciden- tal pieces. The grand “ Alleluhia Chorus,” by Beethoven, was magnificent, and the beau- tiful soprano solo of the “ Alma Virgo,’’ was most exquisitely sung; indeed, its execution could hardly have been surpassed. In short, the whole solemnity was most sec- cessfal as the numerous congregation can tes- tify. Mr. Palmer, at the s2me time conductor ani organist, peformed his arduous task ad mirably. The gentlemen who composed the orchester never played better, and in volun- teering their services as they did, they fully received the grateful appreciation of the con- gregation. uch credit is due to those who were instrumental in furnishing so rich a mu- sical treat on this occasion. At St Patrick’s, St. John’s and other cburches there was also very fine musical per- formances. Saterpay Niest, a Mr Grayson was struck in the face with a whip by aman named Har- rison. The accused was arrested by Officer Wollard, and held fora further hearing by Capt. Birch. The act was committed in front of the Kirkwood House, where Harrison was waiting foremploymentasahackman. Com- plaint was made against a young man, not yet urrested, for abusing his father and striking a friend with a barof adoor. A warrant was issued immediately. Last evening, some few drunken women were strolling about, and some were complain- ing of itl treatment. They were sent to their homes. A colored man, named Washington Hawkios, was arrested by Officer Mitchell for fighting and drunkenness. [le had been se- verely handled, and was committed for court by Capt. Birch. Tux New Orcas, built by Erben, of New York, for St. Patrick's church, of this city, was in its place yesterday, and used in the services by the aecomplished organist, Mr W.P. Williams. It has been tried by com- petent judges, who agree that it is one of the best instruments of the kind in this section of the country. It is said to be rather large for the church, the bass pipes being sixteen feet in length. But as there is a movement to- wards the enlargement of the chapel, there is no dissatisfaction in the congregation, and all appear to be greatly pleased with the new in- strument. Loox out for spurious quarter eagies, which have made their appearance in Philadelphia, Baltimore, and this city. They are dated *-1854,”? and in point of execution are caleu- lated to deceive, though in color they are as light as brass, aa well as deficient in weight. The various shades of color of the genuine coin will assist in the passing of the spurious, but when compared with the genuine the dif- ference in weight is easily perceived. An ex- amination and comparison will cost but little trouble, while it may prevent considerable loss. Screre Prawos —Our esteemed fellow-citi- zen. Mr. Richard Davis, who has so long been identified with the music business in this uty, has just received a number of superb Chick- ering pianos, of beautiful tone and workman- ship; also, some of Brown & Allen’s manu- facture, of exeellenttone and finish. Wecan confidently resommend those in want of good instruments to Mr. Davis's establishment, where they will find what they are in quest of to a certainty. © Tee Meruopist Conrgrences having ad- journel, the ministers are moving to their The churches on their routes are y supplied by the members of the nferenees, and the congregations are pleased listen to their old pastors The Kev. Wm. Cllier, agent of Madison College, preached in the Methodist Protestant Church, on Ninth Mreet, yesterday, to a very attentive congre- gation. Several able ministers of both Con- ferences were in the city yesterday. p Bors.—A gang of young vagabonds bave made the vicinity of the gas house s tlece of nightly meeting, and it is dangerous for respectable females t> pas3 near them Several ladies have been insulted by them, and their villainous treatment of a woman who fell into their hands a few evenings since, has attracted the especial attention of the Auriliary Guard to them. If arrested they will be severely punished. Miss Kean’s Coxcert —It will be perceived that this talented lady gives another concert on Tuesday evening next at the request of a number of gentlemen, sojourners and citizens of Washington. Her talents and musical ac complishments will, we take it, secure her a full house independent of the interest added to the occasion by the compliment to her in- Volved in the invitation in response to which the is to sing. Nattovat Tagatre.—The bare announce- ment that Edwin Forrest is to appear to night as the wily Cardinal Richelieu, will doubt- less suffive to fill the National from pit to dome. but the additional array of talent pre- fected seems to make confirmation doub! re. The management deserve much credit re success for the spirited manner in ch they have opened the campaign. Gerace Courca Faim.—Fairy forms, fairy- like music, fare and all other desirable affairs will be found to-night at Grace church ver Farnbam’s bookstore; so take a eon each erm, march to the fair, pay fare, go up the stairs and thero you are! and we guarantee all whe follow our advice a larly pleasant time. Can we say fair- n thet? Tae Courrs.—The Criminal Court was oc- upying the Council chamber to-day, the Cir- 2uit Court oceupying the court room. We were soformed that the Poudrette case had been ven to the jury, but they had not agreed Upon a verdict. This week wil! probably be devoted to appeal cases in the Cireuit Court, 4nd the jary be summoned for Monday next. Y., in answer to a laté circular of the Patent Office, is of interest just now : Asparagus.—The Giant is. much esteemed on account of its close head and 1. size. The ground should be trenched to three feet ; then fill the trench with a compost of hot-bed manure, swamp muck, lime, ashes and refuse of the garden; two loads of muck, one of ma- nure and of garden mould, five bushels of lime, and five of ashes to every twenty-five loads of manure, well mixed. The plants should be put in im the usal way, covered with six inches of fine mould, and then with the ma- bure. Celery.— Seymour's White Solid,’’ Eng- lish seed from the U.S Patent Office, is a choice variety, was sowed on the first of April in a hot-bedj and transplanted on the first of June tothe trench, each trench onitae one hundred and fifty plants, three thousan plants in all from one paper. They were re- moved from the trenches about the 20th of Oc- tober, when their market value was six-and- a-fourth cents. The Olive-shaped Radish turng out well. The Flori-fleur Melon is a choice fruit of de- licious flavor, and much sought. The Lima Cocoanut Squash seeds have prospered well. The period here is from the tenth of May to the tenth of September. [CommumrcaTeD. By my faith, Mr. Editor, methinks the times are pregnant with strange fancies. A retrograde reform is upon us, which, unless nipped in the bud, will destroy the dearest, fondest source of daily pastime to our beaux, and drive them disconsolate to a dreamless, sleepless pillow. Now, I have no ambition of becoming the first to enter the lists in instituting a knight: errantry in vindication of the privileges and immunities of the sterner sex; but liable as I know I will be to the denouncement of ungal- lantry, I must enter my protest against the sweeping charges and farfetched conclusions of ‘‘A Stranger Lady” ip her communication of the 17th ’Od's life o’ me! the old adage ‘‘A cat may look at the king’’ has lost its potency; the slaye’s impunity of sight is revoked; like stiff-necked Jews or high-yoked marines must we stalk, head erect, eyes forward, neither turning to the right, left, or back; maugre the thousand flashes from the soul quaking artil- lery of woman’s eyes should blaze around us, we dare not turn to see from what quarter the impeding annihilation comes! ie, for shame! A doom so hopeless, a de- cree so inexurable, chimes not with the wonted forbearance of lovely woman. Proud am I that the fairy beauties of our metropolis have not thus pronounced. ‘A stranger’’ for- sooth must sound the curfew of our departed bliss ; for dark, indoed, will be our doom, the ingocent enjoyment of looking upon modest beauty once forbidden one fair ‘* stranger’’ scents of the green-eyed monster and smacks of the neglect of one u- observed, rather than the annoying attentions of the ‘observed of all observers.” Not ob- serve the ladies; not languish under the vein- tickling glance of dark eyes; not be entranced mn wondering admiration of the chaste car- riage and sylph-like form ; not grow ce:tat’e at the peering radiance of a sun-tinged ring- let; not go mad at the stolen glance of a tiny foot and fawn-like ankle; not applaud aduck of a bonnet and hooped-jupon—preposterous ! and can we thus luxuriate without being deemed impertinently curious, or igoorantly ill bred Whip me fora churl, but I’d hail the felon garb rather than law-abide such tyranny’ God forfend that J should yield the palm of gallantry to you, Mr, Editor, but in all sincerity I submit, could the “Stranger Lady” Ihave a sly guezs that sho be in earnest ? has achieved a sD coup d'etat in thus rating the beaux curiosity.
