COMMUNICATED. Mr. Editor: Mr. Richardson in yesterday’s Star has replied to my inquiry of afew days previous, in relation to stopping 7 tens of mailable matter at a velocity of 700 feet per second. I am ob! to Mr R for his reply ; at the same time | must say that it is alto gether unsatisfactory, and sc much at variance with all laws of science, that, with your per- mission, I will show you and yourone hun- dred thousand readers, that the — i Telegraph, as exhibited in Mr. R.’s book, and endot by the Senate Committee, is not by any means adapted for practical purposes on the scale that he pro " * Mr. R says that the mile of contained air in the tube next to Washington will be em- ployed as anelastic buffer, to resist and over- come the momentum of the load, (he does not — this mile of air is known to be there,) whether more or less, and that this compressed air will b- allowed poops through the safe- ty valve at @ pressure of 40 lbs. to the square inch, which amount of resistance will near! overcome the momentum of the 7 tons, and after it has passed the valve it will be an- nounced by the ringing of the bell. Now, tir, 7 tons, at a velocity of 700 feet per second, wttains a momentum of nearly eleven millions of pounds; in other words, his mail bag of 7 tons moving from Baltimore to Washington at the rate of 700 feet in a second, will require eleven millions of pounds to arrest tt at Wash- ington. in his book, he nor his Senate com- mittee do not say anything about sopping it; and, in reply to my first question, he offers only 18.000 Ibs. to stop it. You will readily perceive that his 40 lbs tothe inch of pressure will not answer at all. Hence the necessity of some other reply to satisfy “Iago” and the public. There will, I opine, be something more than the ringing of the bell to announce the arrival of the mail bags of 7 tons weight at Washington, and I would say to the post- master ‘‘ stand from under’ at its arrival! Now, by taking his book and explanation, Elisha P. Phelps, agent for Dickins‘m Col- | ¢xdorsed by the Senate Committee as data, lege. Aside from the great interest added to the piece by the superior manner in which Mr. and Miss Richings p*I- formed their respective parts, the vocal effort# of the latter being so highly appreciated, the stage appointments were in capital taste, ren- dering the entertainment extremely agreeable even tothe most refined in sentiment To- morrow evening, it will be seen, a complimen- tary testimonial to those accomplished artis! will come off ; and the same series of decided | 8™s0n- hits will be enjoyed, we trust, by an audience that wil! render such a demonstration in that large Theatre, no unmeaning compliment. Gross CareLessyess.—A correspondent calls the attention of the authorities to the man-trap on the pavement adjoining Baker's Hotel, x the third lamp post from Penn- sylvania avenue, on Four-aud-a-half si made 27 revolutions. Now, sir, [ must beg leave most respectfully to differ with Mr. R, and his book endorsed by that committee. I have with all thelight at present in view arrived at the conclusion that the Atmospheric Telegraph will never be of any great practical utility. I shall feel proud to see his7 tons of mail beat a 2:40 Borse on the course from Baltimore to Wash- fugton. I feel no little interest in the success of Se R's invention; at the same time that I feel it to be impracticable. This building waa situated in the midst of athickly settled square; and but for the fact that the surrounding buildings were all very damp and adead calm was prevailing at the time the fire occurred, much destructien of valuable property would have resulted.
