The procession moved down Twentieth street towards Holmead’s burying ground, the side- walks being densely crowded with tors as well as the windows and baleonies of houses on the lineof march. Standing on the brow of the bill at the corner of Twentieth and I streets, and viewing the long drawn out pro- cession as it extended down the hill, along the hollow, and up the rising ground in the vi- einity of the burying ground, it presented a nd and imposing spectacle, and one that will not be soon forgotten by those who were present. Arrived at the grave, the affecting and sclemn service was read, and there was searce a dry eye in the assemblage as the widow and her children took their last ago- nized farewell of the remains of the dear de- parted. ‘ We take this occasion to call attention to the particularly destitute condition of this afflicted family, through thissudden depriva tion, and to hope that the widow and children of one who died in the service of the public, will not be suffered to want bread The excellent order maintained yesterday, and the systematic manner in which the or- der of ceremonies was carried out reflects the highest credit upon the firemen and all con- cerned. The remains of Mr. A. Palmer, whose sud- den and accidental death we noticed on Wednesday, was followed to their last resting place, in the Presbyterian cemetery, yester- day, by the members of the Vigilant fire com- pany, accompanied by a number of their brother firemen from Ahr Yee and a large concourse of sympathising friends Thi: is the fourth member which the Vigilant cum- pany has been called upon to follow to the tomb in less than one year, Great solicitation is manifested by our Methodist and Methodist Protestant friends, a8 to who will be sent to serve them, minis- terily, the next year by their respective con- ferences now insession. As both of these are very desirable stations, doubtless they will be supplied with able ministers, The ee have been elected officers of the Domocratic Association for the ensuing six months: President, Rubert Ould; Firat Vice President, Richard Jou: s; Second Vice President, G@. W. Beall; Third Vive President, Rebert White; Recording Secre- tary, E. Krouse; Corresponding Secretary, G. G. Brown; Treasurer, John Garrett. The Association is in a flourishing condition, and steadily increasing in membershi We have been requested to Young M [communicateD Mr. Eprror : In your paper of the 1!th in- stant, under the caption of *‘ Deplorable Ac- cident—Fire and Loss of Life,”’ there is a sentence which, unless corrected, would lead to the belief of the walls being of insufficient thickness, and of inferior materials; it is this: “An examination of the wall showsit to have been very slightly constructed, and a portion of it old brieks.”’ The walls of both of the main buildings were fourteen inches thick their whole height to the roof, Sased on a foundation of three courses eighteen inches thick ; and the con- tract expressly excluded any but “the best ality of hard brick’’ to be used in any of walls; and all the outside walls to be ‘‘of good, hard burned, fair faced red brick ’’ “All the walls of the rear building to have the same three footing courses eighteen in- ches thick, thence fourteen inches to the sec- ond floor of joists, and thence nine inches to the roof.’’ Very respectfully yours, Geo. F. De xa Rocae, In behalf of Dela Roche & Nenning, the architects Wasuixetos, March 12, 1856 We very cheerfully give place to the above, having no disposition to do injustice to the architects, who are gentlemen of known high character and ability, and whose statement should have weight accordingly. Since the appearance of the article complained of, we have taken psins to make further inquiry in rd to the matter. To our eye the wall looks slight, but those who are bett up in such matters say that qui aa the ordinary run of modern-built brick houses; if so, we think the sooner we go back to the thick old-fogy built brick walls the better.
