Tee Wearser continues cold and dismal. March, usually the courfer-month of spring, isthis year the rear-guard of winter, and spitefully © away in a pet. Thereis a bluster in the atmosphere,—a diabolical chili in every breeze that sweeps down from the mountains.—and a frozen determination on the part of the frost-king to “linger in the Jap of spring’ until regularly thawed out. Weil, let ug not repine If the month has come in like n, let us hope that it will go cut like a lamb. There is the comfort of freedont from musqutos, and no danger of sun- strokes. Meanwhile the “‘ spring trade’’ is commenc- ing, and we look for a great business season here as in the larger cities In New York, (we quote from the Sunday Atlas,) it is fore- shadowed in every commercial movement. It is predicted by the heavy influxes of gold from California and Australia, and it must of necessity spring from out the bounteous har- vests oflast fall. ‘‘ Out of evil cometh good.” ‘The ice-bound condition of commerce through- out the last three months must eventuate in double the business activity usually exhibited, in favorabie times, between the present pe- riod and the beginning of July. So, be eheer- ful, and prepare for labor—earnest, heaithfui, honest, paying labor. Be ready to take ad- vantage of the trade that offers Do not—we address you individually—staud with folded hands, waiting for patronage, but cotegnd it by setting forth. in advertisements, your cisims to it. Everybody that makes money advertises Some attribute the present pros- perity of the General Government to the liber- ality with which it advertises And we are sure that the “* medinm’’ of all Other ‘‘mediums”’ hereabouts. for gaining public attention, isa well worded advertisement in the Evening Star. Cover or Cratws —On Monday, the opinion of the courtin the case of C H. McCormick vs. The United States was delivered by Chief Justice Gilchrist ; the court deciding that they have jurisdiction in the cave, and should, on that ground, report it back to Congress. Judge Blackford read his dissenting opinion in the case of Spence and Reid; the opinion vf the court having been delivered by Judge Scarburgh on the 3d inst , in which testimony was ordered to betaken. The opinions of the court in the casea of H. J. Anderson vs. The United States, A. B Thompson vs The United States, Pacheco vs The United States, aud Samuel J. Hursby vs. The United States, were delivered by Judge Scarburgh; the court ordering testimony to be taken in each. Mr. Philips argued the motion for a rehear- ing inthe caseof J D Holmanws The United States; which motion was submitted The case of Thomas Crown vs The United States was next called up for trial on the evi- denee Mr. Stanton, in behalfof the claimant, offered, in evidence certain depositions taken to be used before Congress; which were ob- jected to by the Solicitor on the ground that such depositions were ezxparte, and for other reasons. Pending the argument respecting this evidence, the court adjoruned On Tuesday, the court made an order totake testimony in the case of Isaac Williams vs The United States, praying for indemnifica- tion for losses sustained in the war with Mex- aco. Mr Stuoton resumed his argument on the facts in the ease of Thomas Crown vs. The United States, and had not concluded his re- warks when the court adjourned Ine Peotar Biewennica.—Officer Keese, of the pulice firm of Cox & Keese, went down te Richmond armed with a requistion from the State of Maryland upon the State of Vir- ginia for the pedlar Blumenrich, who, wemer- tioned sume days ago, bad been arrested in Virgisia for stealing a wateh in Baltimore. — it in this city. Some years ree Mr D. commenced the manufac- ture of his superior ale among us, and find- ing Tr encouragement to brew ale equal to the best bottled h ale a SP into the United States, he is said to have given up, for a time, the effort thus to excel all others in the business in this country. Recently, however, he is again brewing ale of a supe- rior quality, which, we are glad to be able to say, is rapidly becoming properly appreciated. e learn from a frieud, without his know- ledge, that he has lately filled ge order for the supply of the Astor House in New York, and another for the St. Nicholas in that city: stantial proof, indeed, of the truth of what we say above of his remarkable success. His cask ale has all the flavor and life of the very best bottled Scotch ale, and is, of course, much more healthy, as well as palatable, than any other draft ale brewed in the United States. We state these facts concerning his business without his knowledge, direct or in- direct, as a tribute to hia remarkable success as a District of Columbia business man, in roducing, by long odds the finest article in line manufactured in the United States. O Teupora! O Mercury !—Our gifted co- temporary, Mercury, tells the readers of last Monday's Baltimore Sun, that they have en- tered upon the last week of Lent, thus knock- ing Palm Sunday and Good Friday complete! outof thecalender. Dear Mercury, why ws// you thus disgrace the whole business of penny- a lining by this awful botch-work ? Why not rely upon the scissors and paste-pot alto- gether’ You do very well when you copy verbatim from the Star. These blunders oc- cur when you undertake a paragraph on your own hook. Copy altogether from the Star,— the Sun readers are good-natured and will not object to your second-hand news, they are used to it! This will save you from the un- pleasant faux pas of burying people in advance of the Sexton, and at the wrong cemetery, or of minutely describing religious ceremonies that didn’t happen to come off, or of ‘* borrowing’’ a whole week from ‘‘lent’’ and of the innumerable kindred mistakes to which your Mercurial nature inclines you. A Novetty.—We feel convinged that an intellectual and refined audience will fill Odd Fellows’ Hall on Friday evening, to hear Miss Clara Darling’s attractive entertainment. ‘* Hiawatha’ is the first truly great American poem founded upon purely Indian legends, and is acknowledged by critics of the highest standing to be entirely worthy of its author, the first of American poets. It isin facta song of Indian legends and wild traditions, highly interesting and dramatic in ite nature, and admirably adapted to public delivery. especially with the aid of forest scenery, wig- wams and Indian costume to aid the poetical illusion. As it turned out he was laboring under an at- tack of maniz-a-potu, and had an idea that acrowd of wen were in hot pursuit of him beeause he was a Free-magon. He was kept until this morning and was then started on the right track for home by Capt. Biron. Thig case presented another of those terrible illus- trations of the effects of intemperance, which are beyond even the genius of a Gough to depict jn all their horrors, GEORGETOWN CORRESPONDENCE. Gzoreetown, March 12, 1856. An accident of a painful and fatai charac- ter happened yesterday at the brick yard of Messrs. Edes, Pickrell &Co. About 4o’clock P m., while Mr. Albert Palmer was engaged in digging clay the bank caved in upon him, crushing his body in the most painful and shocking manner. He was immediately con veyed to his home on High street, where he had the services of several of our most ekill- ful physicians. Notwithstanding every thin was done fur bim that could be, he capined about 8 o'clock. He leaves a wife and three children Mr P was an active member of the Vigilant Fire Company, and will be.in- terred by them to-morrow afteraoon at 3 o'clock. Our river and canal still remains bloeked up tight and fast by the ice. During the few comparatively mild days of last week the ice in the river ‘ame pretty well broken up and commenced moving off, but old King Frost commenced another siege on Sunday last, which has pretty well repaired all the damage which kad been done to his work by ae he stock of fuel in our oity hes near: been exhausted, and fears are chegtontag e be entertained by many, that unless the wea- ther shall moderate very soon, that pric will advauce beyond the reach of persons in ordinary circumstances, and result in no small amount of suffering. The alarm of fire last night was caused b the burning of @ foul chimney at the resi- dence of Mr Coyle on Bridge street. The Vigilant boys soon had their machines on the spot, but had no cause to use them. The property known as the old Mason Foundery is being converted into a distillery. The sugar sale on the wharf of the Messrs. Dodge to-day, has been prevented by the con tinued close of navigation of the river by the ice. This is another proof, as clear as a sun- beam, of the great injustice done to the peo- ple of our city by coutinuing the long-com- lained of obstruction to our navigation be- owas. Had it not been for the bridge across our channel the ice would all have passed off last week, when it was so thoroughly broken Up. , _ The stock of four in our market is becom- jug very light; Sales are on @ small ecale, and confined to the retail trade; held at $7.50 and upwards according to brand.
