EVENING STAR,| LOCAL INTELLIGENCE, Ksow Noraixe Ratiricarion Muetixe.— Copp’s saloon was well filled last — partly by the Hindoo ratifiera, and partly by lookers- on, of all sorts of party stripes, gathered through curiosity to see the heoaking of ground for the campaign. Mayor Towers wag called to the chair, and the usual number of vice-supernumeraries and secretaries appointed. Mr. Towers stated the objects of the meeting, which was to ratify the nominations of Millard Fillmore for Presi- dent, and Andrew Jackson Donelson for Vice President of the United States, nominations made by the great American party, and which had been received with feelings of gratifica- tion by every member of that party. & Mr. Towers was followed by Collector Mc- Calla in the same strain; and then the Hon. Andrew Stewart, of Pennsylvania, was intro- duced, and received approvingly by the audi- ence. He spoke of the unanimity with which Mr. Fillmore had been nominated at the Phil- adelphia Convention; of the a, majority ae gave Mr. Fillmore for the Vice Presidency in 1848, and endeavored to de- monstrate that he would get an increased vote now that he was nominated for the Presi- dency. Mr. Horton of N. C., who was also a dele- gate to the Philadelphia Convention, next addressed the meeting in laudation of the ‘ American party’? and the American nomi- nations. He hit a tremendous lick at his brother Know Nothings by deprecating the miserable scramble for office which was such a curse to the country. Hon. L. D. Campbell of Ohio, made his ap- arance in the halland was loudly called Rr. In answer to the call, he started with an attempt at glorifying Know Nothingism in an argumentative way, but finding this rather up- business he abandoped it, and at- tempted the ‘‘funny line’’ in which he shone to more advantage. Hon_ J.J. Crittenden took the stand, and Know Nothingism got another handsome no- tiee from the eloquent Kentuckian, and the “party”’ applauded accordingly wv. French 8. Evans followed Mr. Critten- den, and then, after three cheers for the American party, the meeting dispersed. Al- together, it was a pretty Apap affair, and a good enough beginning of the fun of the 1856, presidential campaign. So get out the torches, transparencies and tar barrels! Whoorah! Ivvor“ation Wanrep.—W hocan enumerate above billions, or tell the number of Saturday snow storms now reached, the first day of March, 1856? Could anybody oblige us with 8 pair of snow shoes, or put ua on the track of an Esquimaux dog-sledge’ These we want -— ; to-morrow we gS another general liquifacti ion, and should glad to layina ~ir of fishermen’s boots and a portable canoe tor street navigation. Yesterday was a fine day; the ladies eaid it was ‘‘a delightful day ;’’ folks began to talk about the coming spring; it was looked upon asa settled thing that winter had ‘‘ played out.’’ The an- nouncement made by us a few days ago of the opening of river navigation had been caught up hopefully by “ Washington corre- spondents’’ and “ telegrapbers,’’ and burried over the wires north and south, east and west; but again it snows, again it freezes, and so yanishes all our visionz of early strawberries echoed upon all sides des- pondently, and not a bit of sleigh riding en- thusiasm is elicited. The fact is, it is human nature to admire snow all the more for being alittle eoy and coquettish in her advances. Lhis over-freedom is repulsive in the extreme. P.3. It raing! and perhaps we are to have the peag and strawberries after all. Tin minutes later! It snows again, and there is nothing to do but to study patience and resignation, and let it snow! TexpeRraxce DEMONSTRATION AT THR SKITH- somias Inxstircta.—A large audience was assembled at the ——— last night, Ee the programme announced was not entirely oaues out. Mr. Speaker Banks and the “two members of Congress,” did not mak their appearance; Mr. Gough, however, made ample amends for all other deficiencies, and for two hours he held his audience enchained by one of his characteristic serio-comic-melo- dramatic, poetic, etic, electric, and every way-attractive efforts. We heard the question debated last night what success Gough would have attained upon the political arena, had he entered upon it, instead of the field he now occupies go tri- amphantly. The vordict was, that though he might have carried everything before him on the stump, he would hardly have made his mark among the dry facts and technicalities of the bar or the Senate.
