What a fine chance fora joke on Quill; eat the delicious morsel he has prepared, and when too late laugh at bim—that’s it—bright idea—ah, we have him on the hip! The juicy steak is broiled, and eagerly and hastily devoured, after having given it a fine brown roast Quill comes and goes to jabor suspecting nothing wrong. Quad and Rule could not long retain their mirth at the rich joke they had played , the secret must out. Thanks to the careful, provident Quill, ‘‘ the steak was fine!”’ Quill, comprehending at once the whole state of affairs, determined richly to repay the boys for their left-hand joke, so instantly assuming the gravity uf an owl, and the soli- eitude of a matronly shanghai, with great earnestness, grasping Quad Ly the arm, ex- claimed : ‘*My God! Quad, you haven’t eaten that poisoned meat!’ “‘Y-e-s,”” responded Quad, whilst his face assumed an ashy paleness, his limbs were seized with a trembling, and his eyes stood out an inch from his forehead. “Great God! then you are poisoned, and in a few minutes will beadead man. Strych- nine was put upon that meat to kill wolves.’ Every person in the office knew that strych- nine had been procured that day to silence some wolves, that, with their howlings, made midnighthideous. Each, therefore, now rushed forward to the seene of conversation, every- thing in the shape of business was suspended, and each waited in breathless agony the ter- mination of this tragical scene ** Poisoned! strychnine! death!’’ groaned the thoroughly affrighted Quad. “Oh! my God, save me,”’ and he rolled his eyes be- seechingly, an instant for the first time hea- venward, then hastily placing both hands upon his stomach, he hissed, ‘* Ah, ye gods! I feel the death gripe—the poisen has hold of my vitaig! Oh-h-h-h! Save me—what shall I take?” Quill suggested grease, oil, lard, soap, any thing as au artidote. Devil jumped down to the press, and in an instant returned with a large bottle filled with oil—the article used on the press. Quad grasped it spasmodically, disengaged the cork, and placed it to his mouth. Tho limpid stream rapidly flowed towards its level, and the bottle would have been emptied had it not been asrested by the hand of Rule, whose quick eye measured the remains of the fast disappearing, life-saving antidote. The remainder was hastily dis- patched, together with all the grease that could be found in the office. | PRICIAL. Treasury DEPARTMENT, Dec. 1, 1855. Mr. Ackerman, of tica, saw Miss Ellis, and Wal’ so taken with her contour that he tmmediately made up bis mind that, if ber beauty rested on @ « iden basis,’’ he would “go fn and win.”* ee as- certain how Miss Eilis stood with to the precious metals, Mr. Ackerman same to the conclusion that the best thing he could do was to ‘pump’’ her Uncle Benjamin. To get Uncle Benjamin under the “ pump,”’ Mr. Ack- erman invited him into his jor, and took of iced champagne for several days in succession. During one of these soci sit- downs, Ackerman broached the subject in the following manner : “* That young lady who sat at the table near you, this morning, is a magnificent creature. Do you know her name?” “Do you mean the young lady with the black ringlets ?"” “The same. Are you acquainted with her?”’ “Certainly Her name is Ellis; she resides in New Hampshire.” “An old family, the Elises, I believe.” ‘* Yes, sir; and they have the rocks, too.”’ “Possible; and is Miss Ellis worth eny thing in her own right?” “I rather think she is. She owns more land thanT can see over from the top of a flag- staff. In addition to this she holds some thir- ty thonsand dollars’ worth of Government securities ” “Ts it possible ?’” “True, every word of it. I am her uncle. and eught to know.” “Uncle! I beg ten thousand pardons for my rudeness. Had I supposed that you were in any way releted te the yo lady, our conversation would have taken « far different direction. You will overlook the impropriety, I hope ?”’ in promised to do so, although Uncle Benjam he knew that Mr. Ackerman was in falsehood and duplicity the whole ks Ackerman and Uncle Benjamin shook hands and parted. The latter walked toward the beach to haveasmoke. The former went to the barber shop and ordered Mr. Pomatum to dress his hair a (a Julien. Mr. Ackerman put bircself ‘‘on his shape” at the earliess possible moment. He then sought an intro- duction to Miss Ellis. He got it through her ‘* Uncle Benjamin.’’ The introduction ripened into a flirtation, the flirtation into a courtship, and the courtship into a marriage. On Wednesday he received Uncle Benjamin’s answer. We annex it “Dear Nephew:—In answer to yours of Monday last [ send you this. Exuis.”’ The first sy, a Ackerman did when he received Uncle Benjamin's letter was to tear itopen. The next thing was to tear his hair and stamp upon the floor. He asked Mrs. Ackerman whatit all meant. Mrs Ackerman replied that she did not know, but sup it all came from that love of fun which Uncle Benjamin inherited from his grandfather Zerebulon Ellis. of Portland. Mr, Ack.rman d—d her Uncle Benjimin, and paid the same compliment to his grandfather, Zerebulon Ellis, of Portland aving done this he pro~ nounced the whole marriage “ a cursed s¥in- die.’ Mrs Ackerman retorted and charged Mr. Ackerman with being ‘*-a mercenary ad- venturer.”’ Mr. Ackerman said he would permit no woman to Sepa his honor. Mrs. Ackerman retorted by saying that he “could not help himself.’’ This 80 irritated Mr. Ackerman that he walked up and slapped Mrs. Ackerman’s face. Mrs. Ackerman, not liking this sort of thing, pronounced her husband @ brute. Soon after which she re- paired tothe Police Office and swore out a warrant against him for assault and battery.
