Itisa remarkable fact, and one which we believe has never been noticed before, that the census statistics for a long series of years show quite an increase of marriages and births onleap years. Of course, this curious coin- cidense may be accidental, but the uniform- ity of ite recurrence would seem to indicate that the results come from other laws than those of chance. There is no manner of doubt that much of the feverishness in the public mind in rela- tion to the present leap year, comes from the recent stand taken by the ladies upon the woman's rights platform, and a dread on the male side that the ladies of 1856, in availing themselves of the privilege of the season, will resort to more coercive measures than merely ‘popping the question.’’ It ia interesting te note the terror-struck aspect of the poor old bachelors, who walk out among the irls as gingerly as a cat steps among the pud- a upon a wet floor. Poor fellows! they about with quaking hearts, chattering teeth, and shaking knees, eying askance each pretty face they meet. so steery, in fact, that the sight of a bit of linen or calico fluttering on a clothesline, throws them intoa palpitation. If they only knew what was goed for them, they would bless their lucky stars and thank- fully aecept the opportunity afforded them of acquiring a right and title to a charming specimen of wowankind, without a particle of trouble beyond saying ‘“‘ yes,’ when the young lady blushingly and modestly proposes. Just to think of getting over all the awk- wardness of a formal proposal by the benificent provisions of leap year! of dropping easily, almost without volition, into the blessed state of matrimony, and — into the fall enjoy- ment of all its comfortableness and coziness.
