SL LLL LL CEVENIN Se SRE === LOCAL INTESLIGEN' Tar District ty Congress.—In the Senate yesterday it will be seen, Mr. Brown gave notice that he would introduce a bill to pro- vide a library for the young men of the Dis- trict of Columbia. Mr. Mason introduced the following joint resolution, and asked its passage without the formality of a reference : Resolved, \c., That the vacancies in the Board of Regents of the Smithsonian Institu- tion of the class *‘ other than members of Con- gress,”’ eccasioned by the resignation of Rufus Choate and the death of John McPherson Ber- rien, be filled by the appointment of George E. Badger, of North Carolina, and Cornelius C. Felton, of Massachusetts. TheC.C Felton nominated above as Regent +f the Smithsonian Instituto, is Prof. Feiton, of Cambridge, the same who delivered the late very interesting lecture at the Institute upon “ Greece.’” To tae CLerk or tae Weataen.—Si; : You're a nuisance’ Week after week we have endured tolerable patiently the evils resulting from your notorious mal-administra- tion in ho that you were on a temporary spree, and that all would be right in a day or two. But things get worse and worse. Your assortment of weathers must be terribly mixed up. We are getting the bundles that ought to go “to Nova Zembla, or the Lord knows where’ You are sending icebergs to Florida, snow storms to Georgia, and balmy skies to Labrador. You are conatant to noth- ing—the studied malignity of the coldest, slectiest, and rawest of days is followed bya treacherous | ull—the sun shines warmly, and the south wind blows, until we have fairly thrown aside overcoats and wrappings, end then, presto change, we have a blow, and a storm of snow, with icebergs on the sidewalks, ank treacherous well-holes in the gutters; and what sort of a dispensativn there is to be served out next, there is no calculating an hourin advance. You are clearly incomps- tent for your responsible position, and our city authorities ought to haul you up instanter for mal-administration. Mystery axp Crime.—The busy reporters of New York have ferretted out a case which has been whispered about here for some days A highly respectable young lady of this city, having loved * not wisely but too well,’ went to New York, and by the advice of a legal friend there, placed herself under the charge of one of those disgraces to kumanity who (under the guise of practitioners,) send scores annually to early graves. Peritoneal inflam- mation succeeded his treatment, and the young woman died. A resident physician certified that her denth was caused hy conges- tion of the lungs. Furtherinquiry was made, however, and it appeared, on a post mortem, that the lungs were healthy, Poe @ that there were grounds for a suspicion that death was cauced by an attempt to make way with the fruits ofcrime. Coroner Hill, of New York, is now investigating the case, and the evidence will soon be in the papers, Centre Marker, this morning, was any- thing but an agreeable promenade. Buyers and sellers were cold, shivering, cross, and uncommunicative. Bargains were made in rim silence, and those even who in their Cone jostled rudely against each other were too frigid to give utterance to their anger in set speech, and with hands deep buried in their pockets, and features stiffened beyond the possibility of even grimacing their dis- satisiaction, were obliged to “bear and be strong,’ as Longfellow has it, in frigid silence The supplies in market are, of course, light, and the prices of some of the articles have advanced. M resh and salt, continue about the same There were no fresh fish for sale, but a few cod and trout—the former selling at 10c. per pound, the latter at 12ic. Gzoncrrown, Feb. 14, 1856. Our citizens, generally, who have had the Pleasure of the gentleman’s acquaintance, will doubtless regret to learn that the Balti more Presbytery have dissolved the pastoral connection heretofore existing between the Rev. Mr. Atkinson and the Bridge street con- gregation. Mr. Atkinson, welearn, takes the agency of the Metropolitan (Presbyterian) Church, to be erected in Washington. On last Sabbath a collection, amounting to the handsome sum of $120 70, was taken up in Christ Ls praia Church for the benefit of the poor of oureity. The above amount has been handed over to the Female Union Beney- oleut Society by the pastor of the above named Church, the Rev Dr. Norwood. Some of our citizens have promptly re- sponded to the call for clothing for the desti- tute. Most that has been sent to the desig- uated point, has been men's clothing That which is most needed is children’s apparel The greatest amount of destitution in this par- ticular rt among them. Spectator. rr A. & A. Lawrence -—-A “showing up’’ of the affairs of this old Boston commission house has been made by William Gray, Esq.,(Treas- urer of the Atlantic cotton mills, at Lawrence,) showing that half its business talent has left it. He estimates the aggregate sales of the house to be nine millions of dollars per annum, and its net profits at ene hundred and twenty- five thousand dollars a year. He plainly es- timates that this amount of sales is more than the house can properly manage ;—that the losses aro over three per cent per annum ;— one single bad debt to his corporation having been $50,000 ; and that the profits are dizpro- portionate to the services rendered. He says that when Mr. Lawrence returned from his embassy to England, complaints were made to him of the want of ability in his firm, com- mencurate with its enormous business, and that he promised to infuse into it additional talent This statement fell like a bomb-khell among the “solid men’’ of Boston, and the staid old fogies rallied around the house, but ‘“ Young America’’ conquered. Nine hundred and fifty shares decided to leave A & A. Lawrence & Co.’s control, and to trust the experiment of making the treasurer the selling agent, and six hundred and fifty preferred the old beaten path The despotic reign of this great com- mission house may be considered at an end. — A Beactiru, CompLexion may easily be acquired by using the “Balm ofa Thousand Flowers.’ It will remove tan, pimples, and freckles from the skin, leaving it of a soft and roseate hue. Mr. Berthou, cf Fareham. This raft had been tried several times with every suc- cers, and to-day was appointed for a final trial, the raft being ordered out to sea, off Southsea Castle, and there to fire 150 rounds of shell e was accordingly towed out at an early hour in the morning by boats belonging t t, gunnery-ship, the mortar being al3-inch tar, and the charge of pow- der 20!b , the usual charge for such a piece. A party of seamen, gunners, from the Excel- lent, under the command of Lieutenant Leth- bridge, of thst ship, went out with the raft, as did also the Rev. Mr. Berthon, the inventor Everything went on well till the 15th shell was fired, and the concussion at thia discharge was 0 great as to cause the sides of the raft te fly t, and she sank immediately. Lieuten- ant Lethbridge and the seamen gunners were of course immersed in the sea, but we are glad to say all were picked up, with the excoption of one of the men, who must bave sunk im- mediately atter the disaster, as his body was net afterwards seen. The Rev. Mr. Berthon was on the raftduring most of the practice, but he had got into a waterman’s boat to as- certain the effect of the recoil of the mortar from a short d € The mortar was siuo, op Captain Julius Roberts’s principle, whit deprives it of a large amount of recoil at its discharge. The accident is unfortunate, as the previous trials of the roft had proved it to possess some valuable qualities. Probably a little additional strength would obviate such an accident for the future. The body of the missing man had vot been found late this evening. —Loxdon Times.
