This is a claim for an alleged non-fulfilment on the of the government of a contract (entered into between the claimant and the d of Navy Comminsioners) to furnish for the use of the office of Navy Commissioners blank books, blank contracts, and blank bonds. The argument in favor of the claimant was made ye ecars Q. Indeed, nothing Gould have been more pleasing than to witness the above named beautiful ies, together with the charming Miss K—y, Misses O—t, Misses O—ns, and numbers of others not recollected, but whose beauty and manners added equally to the pleasures of the evening, bearing their partners on their arm, and Tead ing to the dance, with bright and cheerful countenances, which seemed to fill all with life and animation. Indeed, it was one of the most novel and beantiful sights ever witnessed. The pleasures being kept up until a late hour, all returned to their homes highly gratified with their night’s adventures. CorRESPONDENT. GxoRGETOWN, Feb. 6, 1856. PaREWELL SiEIGHING !—Good bye, old fel- low! we've had some pleasant times togethér, but the best of friends must part; cireum- stances compel you to leave, and you have our best wishes ir your prosperity wherever you may go. We shall miss you very much, with your musical accompaniments of jingling bells and merry voices; we shall miss the smooth, silent gliding cutters, dashing on with their rich freight of fair women half buried in furs. Runners no more, we must “wait for the wagon.’’ Good bye, sleighing! Don’t forget your Washington friends; call as often as you are passing, and come next win- ter, and pay uz a good ji visit again. Gas.—Wishing to be perfectly impartial, we give place to the following communication. Since its reception, we have suffered great personal inconvenienee on account of a poor quality of light, and sincerely hope that the trouble may be remedied soon : W. D. Wallach, Esq.—Sir: The cause of many gas lights refusing to burn at this time, is owing solely to the present extraordinary cold weather. The lowness of the tempera- ture of the air causes the moisture (always existing in gas as well as in the atmosphere.) to congeal in the service pipe, forming an in- crustation similar to hoar trost, which impedes the flow of the gas The obstruction may often be seoaeul by pouring boiling water upon the service pipe which is exposed to the atmosphere, especially where it leaves the round, or is in contact with a cold wall any of the street lamps have been thawed out, but the continued cold season renews the difficulty mentioned every night. The unparalleled severity of the winter thus far, is unprecedented since the introduc- tion of gas light into the city, and the partial derangement of re in ¢o1 ence is, of course, more sensib! ieaetast. The same deprivation, from the same cause, is much complained of in our neighboring cities AN OFPICER OF THE CoMPANY. VALENTINES.—St. Valentine’s Day is ap- proaching, that most romantic and long famed season, when folks have the inestimable privi- lege of giving away anything valuable or pe wilees getting the credit thereof, and of saying what they please to whom they lease, without being personally responsible. e exercise of this privilege is supposed to do experimenting parties immense good, and it probably does, as all continue to think so from year to year. In fact jit is a pleasant time. and no mistake. Of course, the only Valen- tines worth sending will be advertised in the “ Star,’’ and we recommend our friends who wish such articles to keep a sharp eye on our columns. Fraxkuin Fire Cowrany.—At the annual meeting of this company, held last evening. the following members were elected officers for the ensuing year: Robert E. Doyle. Presi- dent; W. H. Fanning, Vice President; Geo. R. Crossfield, Secretary’ R. G. Eckloff, Assistant Secretary; John T. Coumbs, Treasurer; Henry S. Ward, First Engineer: W. Posey, Third Director; George Shakleford, Keeper of Apparatus. - Porice InteLuiceNce.—Officers Handy, Allen, Wise and Simonds, arrested Daniel Stewart and John Bloyce for stoning the house of Josiah Hitchcock; they were bound over for court by Justice Hollingshead Isaiah Hitehcoek and Thomas Goodin were also bound over for court by Justice H., for firiug a gun at the parties who were stoning the house. At the same office, Celey Hessler, Ann Burns, Emma Brown, and others of the frail fair sex, were bound over to keep the peace, for fight- ing and riot. inranticipg.—An inquest was held this morning at Justice Hollingshead’s, by Coroner Woodard, upon a new born mulatto child, found under the steps of the house occupied by Mr. Plant, on the corner of Thirteenth-and-d- half and C streets. The infant, a fine looking child, bore evident marks of having been strangled, und the jury brought ina verdict accordingly. Wit tue Taaw, occasioned by this rain, carry off the Long Bridge? isthe anxious and universal inquiry this morning Remember- ing the destruction occasioned upon tae river by the thaw four years ago, when there was not such a quantity of snow upon the ground as at present, it cannot be doubted that the continuance, for any length of time, of a warm rain, will raise the river and canal much above their usual level, and cause much loss of property, even should the bridge stand the pressure of the freshet. We notice that the owners of property along the line of the canal are already taking pre- cautions in view of the threatened flood. ‘Tax Mustcat Convention at the Smithso- nian Institute, will commence, it will be seen, on the 1Sth inst., under the direction of Prof. Woodbury. Uston Cnotr.—Those concerned will please notice the call for a meeting of the Board of Directors of the Union Choir, at the house of the President of the Board on Friday night. A Goop Inga.—In this inclement season, every new idea for alleviating misery should be freely circulated, and we cheerfully give e) publicity to the following communication : a Mr. Editor: A plan by which a great deal of suffering among the children of our city may be relieved, suggested itself to my mind. There are wany families who have clothing of their children which they have outgrown, and are nouse to them. Now I propose that some store be selected in every Wabi, that such persons having clothing may send it to that place, and that the Ward committee may dis- tribute it about to the comfort of the suffering little ones. Yours, very respectfully, A Tarte. Supreme Covrt.—Yesterday—No 53 John C. Dodge, appellant, vs. John M. Thompson, slave, drunkenness; five lashes. The usual number of lodgers were accommodated. ————_{—__>-_ = GEORGETOWN CORRESPONDENCE. a Gzorcetowy, Feb. 7, 1856. The cold has considerably moderated. Rain commenced falling last night, and bas contin- ued so to do, until the present time; much of it however freezes as fast as it falls, which has rendered it almost impossible for pedes- trians to get along. If, however, the wind shall remain at the point where it now is, and the cold continue to moderate, and it ceases to freeze, we think there is at least reason to ap- preLend something of a freshet. Should such a thing occur at the present time, with the tre- mendous body of ice now upon our river, con- sequences of a very disastrous character would we fear, be likely to follow.’ We therefore think it would be policy upon the part of our Water street merchants generally, to prepare for the worst. _ The Presbytery of Baltimore, met this morn- ing at 12 o’clock, in the Bridge street Preaby- terian church, for the purpose of considering the expediency of dissolving the pastoral re lations existing between the Rev. J. M. P. At- kinson and said church. The result of their deliberations has uot yet transpired. _We have been inforined by Mr. Vanderwer- kin, the enterprising proprietor of the Union Line, that in consequence of the extreme cold, and several of his drivers getting frost-bitten, that it has been impossible fur him to keep on the line a sufficient number of coaches to ac- comodate the travelling public. Winter continues to attract large crowds at Forrest Hall, with his Chemical Dioramas. There will no be no exhibition to-morrow evening, but on Saturday afternoon and even- ing his ear gift exhibition comes off. The one in the afternoon will be for children, and that at night for all who may attend. There wil! doubtless be a perfect jam. No material change has occurred in the markets since our last. Sixty mon were wearsag ed in a a track from the point where t! steamer Refief was, near! opposite the Laza- retto. The mode of work is to reduce the thickness of the ice which is afterwards broken hy the Relief, and a number of men in the rear with poles push the floating cakes under the ice on each side of the track, so that no ob- struction will be presented. Two ice ploughs, each capable of cutting a track four inches deep, with the aid of one horse to each, will be put to work to-day, and it is thought that in two and a half days, with the Relief to fol- low, a track to Annapolis will be opened. The steamboat Georgia which left Annapolis on Tuesday morning for Norfolk proceeded as far as Thomas’ Point, when she was obliged to re- turn, it being impossible for her to make her way through the ice, The ico at that point was three fect thick where it had not been disturbed. An observation was made from the cupola of the Capitol, at Annapolis, by means of a large telescope. and fora distance of probably seventy miles, the bay presented an unbroken field of ice The prospeet therefore of open- ing a track, except for the relief of those vessels which are lying north of Annapolis, is poor at present, norcan it be hoped that any of the vessels awaiting an opportunity to go to sea will be able to do go until the break- ing up of the ice with the ape of spring, and probably not before the first of March. The ice is not so thick in the harbor as is generally supposed. It was measured in seve- ral places and the greatest thickness found was thirteen inches, The ice below is thicker and it is supposed there will be comparatively little difficul ¥ in the harbor if the track in the river can be accomplished. Snockine TRagEDy.—A most shocking trag- edy was enacted at Jefferson city recently, of which the following are the particulars: Mr. Francis Turner, a middle aged man, and a house painter by profession, and who had amassed a comfortable property, afew months since married a yeung and beautiful woman, to whom he was tenderly attached. Of late, however, it is said, he had become jealous of her, and treated her with great harshness. For several days past, he had been very mel- ancholy, and neglected bis business, and was constantly under the influence of liquor. On the fatal evening, about 6 o’clock, he went home, entered the parlor where his wife was seated by the fire, approached herin a ferocious manner, and exclaimed, ‘‘ We’ve lived lon: enough !’’ and instantly drew a revolver nel pointed it at her, but as he hesitated some- what, it gave her time to fly through an open doorway and close the door afterher. He at- tempted to push open the door, but she placed herself firmly against it, and succesafully Te- sisted his efforts. In a few minutes she heard the discharge of a pistol, and a fall upon the floor. She then raised an alarm, and some of the neighbors entering the apartment with her, found the unfortunate man in the last agonies of death He had fired a ball through his brain. The deceased was, ordinarily, a tem- perate. industrious, and respectable citizen.— New Orleans Bee Hesaews.—The number of Hebrews in the great cities is thus stated:—New York 12,000, Pailadelphia 2,500, Baltimore 1,800, Charles- ton 1,500, London 20,000, Amsterdam 25, 000, Hamburg 9 000, Beriin 5,000, Cracow 20,000, Warsaw 30,000, Rome 6 000, Leghorn 10,000, Constantinople 80.000, Jerusalem 6,000, Sm na 9,000, Hebran $,000.
