7 x Q EVENING STAR. = Se LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. “Tur Broower.’ at Tewrerance Hati.— Dr Sayer made her appearance as a lecturer on Saturday night before a large audience It seems to be « part of the programme of all performances at Temperance Hall that the gas either goes entirely out at the start, or burns in a feeble flickering way, searce making darkness visible; and the audience was not disappointed on this occasion. Two tallow lles—furty to the pound—were substituted, and by these the Doctor endeavored to read her lecture. She must have had strong eyes, as well as a strong mind to manage it. However, zhe took it very coolly, goiug on awhile with her lecture, and then stopping to snuff a can- die, but by the time one was attended to, the snuff on the other had grown about an inch and a half long, and so there was plenty to do. She remarked that if her lecture was no better than the gas, the audience were not likely to be much edified. There was much curiosity to see the Doctor. She is a fine, gentlemanly looking personage, and there was a general murmur of admira- tioa as she made her appearance. She pro- ceede{ to deliver her lecture in aclea& stron, manly voice, and the way she lashed the fol- Jies of fushion and showed up the absurdities of — drabbling skirts, whalebone, hoops, and afl that class of dry goods, was a caution to modern mantua makers. She called things by their right names, ‘talked right out in meetin’, ’ and showed no mercy to the weak- minded, trifling, babyish women of her own sex, who ‘“ nourish their sickly sensibilities upon idleness, charcoal, and chalk.’ She touched upon the use of cosmetics, rome, ete ; spoke of the awkward effect sometimes pro- duced upon a finely rouged face by changing it to a ghastly white, in the course of a chem- ical experiment at a lecture, and queried if this was the reason why the attendance of ladies was so small at the lectures of Professor Chace upon chemistry, at the Smithsonian In- stitute. Prof. Felton’s hit at bloomerism, in his re- marks upon the women of Greece, was re- turned with compound interest, and the Doc- tor triumphantly demoustrated that the women of Kome and Greece were really “strong minded women,”’ and, as such, had temples and mon- uments raised to their memory. The woman of our day was so shackled by fashion that she scarcely dares say she has a soul, lest souls should become urfachienable The appeal of the lecturer, to her sex, to throw off the tram- mels of fashion, and rise to something higher and better, was most earnest and effective, and showed that she has undertaken her labor of reform, not through eccentricity or a desire of notoriety, but through solemn conviction of a duty to perform, regardless of censure or de- preciation. The lecture was received with continuous and hearty applause, and we presume there were not # dozen present who did not agree with the Doctor in most of her conclusions, and yet such is the tyranny of fashion that we doubt if a single skirt will be shortened in consequence, a single reef let out in a tignt dress, or a single ounce less of rouge sold We were strengthened in this conviction by the conversation of some ladies who preceded us on the way out of the hall. They agreed that a dress reform was greatly aie but no one seemed willing to act up to her conviction by starting it; one of them ex- claimed that she thought the Bloomer dress the most becoming as well as sensible, and she really wished that it was the fashion, but they all seemed to come to the concluzion that the change was not to be thought of until fashion d permit it Anyway those whe sin now, sin kuowingly Cannot te Doctor repeat her lecture, or give us ancther upon the same subject? ConPiRMaTION.—-The services at Grace church, (Island) yesterday were of a highly interesting character The Bishop of the Dio- cess, the Kt. Rey. W. K. Whittingham, made a visitation to the church in the afternoon, at- tended by several of the Clergy Evening prayer was “ffered by the Rev. J. N. MeJilton of Baltimore; Kev. Dr. Pyne of this city, read. ing the Scripture lessons. The Bishop preach- ed an instructive and interesting sermon from the last verse of the 2d chapter Ephesians In whom ye also are builded tegether fora habitation of God through the Spirit,’ and confirmed thirty-one persons. The class was to have consisted of forty rsons, but nine were detained at home by the severity of the weather Grace Church is situated on the corner of Ninth and D streets, Island, and is under the pastoral care of the Rey. Alfred Holmead, a most faithful and Iaborious clergyman, as is evident by hia success in the establishment of Grace Church under circumstances of difficulty almost without a parallel. Although the day was one of the most inclement of the season, the church was filled to overtiowing, and we noticed many ellerly, as well as young people, among the number of those who received the solemn rite of confirmation Horrtate Accent —A lad named James Maithews, who resides with his parents at the extreme west-end of Pennsylvania Avenue, was nearly burned to death on Saturday. His father was burning a lime-kiln on the bank of Rock creek, and the boy was playing about, ceeasionally running over the kiln to keep himself warm. Meanwhile the father pro- ceeded to clear out the kiln, and when the boy next ran over the surface, he fell through into the heated lime beneath. No time was lost in getting him out, but he was terribly burned before he was extricated. Medical relief was obtained, and on enquiring this morning we learned that the youtuful sufferer was alive, but in great pain. “Kewemegr tHe Poor.’’—With pleasure we call the attention of the readers of the Star tothe fact that to-night will be given the second annual ball of the Washington High- landers, the entire proceeds of which will Le appropriated to those of our citizens who are now suffering for the necess: of life Washington Gas Company, taking im consid- eratior. the object of the Highlander’s ball, bave kindly given the gas for the cecasion free. ‘The managers have made such arrange- ments as will warrant pleasure to all that may attend, and we have no hesitation in saying that it will be the fal/ of the season. Tae Taeatre.—The debut of Mr. Boothroyd Pairclough§will doubtless attract a crowded house, as it is said that he is worthy to wear the mantle of the gifted Booth. We fear that he will not receive that support so essential to the suecess of « young actor, for Miss Devlin eannot h we much experience in the arduous part of Desdemona. It is de- signed not to interfere with the other schools already in existence, but to supply a want which has long been fvit in a part of the Is- land hitherto neglected. — Portican Reavixes.—It will be seen by our advertising columns that Miss Teresa Es- monde will read at Carusi’s on Thursday evening. She has read to crowded houses in New York and Boston, where the critics have paid her high compliments. When he had struggied, like a fish out of water, through to the passage, ‘We will proceod no further in this business,’ a tall, lanky Jerseyman arose In the parquet, and, placing his kow- shoot upon his head exclaimed : “I'm blamed glad of it; for sich bad actin’ I never did see!” Dowden’s Dental ow arknowledged by all Dentists to be the best for the Teeth In use.
