(| nnn ee eee EVENING STAR. = eS LOCAL INTELLIGEN Too Swarr ror ’Ex.—A numberof our fel- low citizens, owners of fine horses, tempted by the unusually good sleighing existing nearly threo weeks past in this region, have gradu- ally got into the habit of spending an hour each afternoonin showing off the paces of their animals upon Pennsylvania avenue, the finest course in the universe for such a bees red barring the fact that females and children must necessarily cross it, tte while. Our city’s police, in accordance with their very plain duty, arrested more or less of them yesterday morning under the Corporation ordinance empowering any magistrate to im of not less than five dollars for fast driv our public streets. Some twenty citizens were duly hauled up under this provision of the Corporation laws, nearly all of whom were perrons who could not have been temptod to violate a law under any other circum- stances than Just such a time for the rt of sleighing, as the present. Among others asked to step to the Captain’s office and set- tle, (we feel a very becoming sense of shame in confersing the corn,) was the quiet and al- ways duly considerate editor of the Ster, who received the gentje hint from the polite Chief of the Police, wholly on the strength of usuall. drawing the ribbands over quite a gameis! pair ake s, with knowing eyes, rakish tails, and peed, at least in their—necks. It so turned out, however, that this same pair of bays were quietly stabled some cight miles distant in Virginia when the grand race came off, and their butter-wont-melt-in-his mouth driver was as quietly, just then, attending to his duties as a sedate and industrious farmer, with which calling he varies the brain-taxing labors of the newspaper office. So the com- plaint against him would’nt lic for that best of all reasons—he was’nt thar. Nor would it lie against his companions in misfortune ; in- somuch asthe Corporation ordinance under which it was essayed to fine them, turned out nud! and votd, owing to a flaw in it. Moral.—Never essay to sleigh over the measured mile on Pennsylvania avenue, be- tween the Capitol and President’s Houre, in- side of two-forty, unless you have a bevy of sharp lawyers along, who, in arguing them- selves out of the scrape, must necessarily make geod your defence also. Tae Race Yesterpay Arrerxoon.—The gentlemen who were formally tried yes- terday morning before justices Hollingshead and Morsell for the violation of the Cor- poration ordinance against fast driving, and duly acquitted, owing toa flaw in the law, seme how or other happened to meet, in their spanking turn-outs, some thirty in number, in the afternoon, at the foot of the Capitol, and after coming up the avenue in Procession three abreast, on a slow trot, put their animals to their speed on their return. Though risky sport, indeed, it was neverthe- less one of the most beautiful sights we ever witnessed; all the horses being goers, the sleighs and their accoutrements being gener- ally in the very tip-top of the fashion, and the sportemen as full of harmless mischief as wo ever saw aS many gentlemen engaged in a race. Thousands witnessed and relished the sport, and no harm was done. Our only re- gret in connection with the affair is, that be- ig the conductor of a journal, and therefore by profession a sturdy inculcater of every thing that is right and proper, we felt com- pelled to leave the bays quietly in the stable and bite our finger nails, half in envy of the fun being enjoyed by our friends not profes sionally compelled to be always demure, and ty set an unexceptionable example. A New “Srar.’"’—For some time past, our exchanges of New York and Philadelphia. who evince an interest in theatrical matters, have spoken highly, (and we hope deservedly.) of a — gentleman named Boothrod Fairclagh, who as yet is a novice on the boards. He ap- peared at the Bowery, in New York, as Sir Giles Overreach, and created a profound sen- sation. His second triumph was inthe Quaker city, where his Iago won golden opinions from all sorts of ps oe He is said to possess all the physical attributes and mental endow- mente tu make a fine actor.—Balt. American We understand that Manager Jarrett pre- seyts this young American debutant before a Washington audience, on Wednesday eveuing next, in the character of “Othello”? From what the press say of him, we should judge him to be a gentleman of rare talent and mental endowment, and doubt not bat that a full house will grect him on this occasivn, the first of his efforts in the Federal city. Caartry.—At the meeting of eitizens of the Second Ward, held on the 25th instant, at Harmony Hall, and called for the purpose of adopting measures fur the relief of the suffer- ing poor of this city, the Rev. Mr. Phelps was called to the chair, and F. A. Tschiffely ap- pointed secretary Mr William Pettibone, who called the meeting, stated its object—when, on account of the sinall number present, the meeting ad- Journed to meet in the Foundry church, cor- ner of G and Fourteenth streets, on next Mon- day evening. the 28th instant. at 7 o'clock and a committee :. William Pettibone, F. A. Tre ly, and Grafton Powell Was appointed to make the Decessary arrange- ments for said meeting The secretary was directed to publish the proceedings in the city papers, and furnish notices to the pulpits of the churches of the Second Ward, urging the attendance of the citizens of the ward at the adjourned meeting. Taz Union Cadre Association decided last nigbt to give a Concert for the benefit of the poor during the session of the Musical Conven- tion which commences at the Smithsonian In- stitute about the 18th prox , under the direction of Prof. Woodbury. We learn that eight nundred tickets have been handed over to the Union Benevolent Association for sale, in order that the poor may receive immediate benefit. Prof. Woodbury is expected to be accompa- nied by two fine soprano singers, and any Con- cert got up under the auspices of the Union Choir Association must necessarily be a suc- cessful affair. —The Confirmation rites at , Trinity Church, and Grace Church, (Island) which were deferred two weeks ago, will be administered to-morrow by the Bishop of Maryland, the Rt. Rev. Wil- liam R. Whittingham. At the latter church (the Rev. Alfred Hol- mead’s) there 1s a class of about forty to be confirmed, and the ceremony will receive pe- culiar interest from the fact that the church has attained ¢o satisfactory a position through the indefatigable labors of the pastor and his people. The service at Grace Church com. mences at 3} o'clock p. m., and the Bishop delivers a sermon also there in the afternoon. The course ig in capital condition, and superior Sport may confidently be counted on, Entries can be made up to three o'clock, pm. “Old Sap,”’ thus far, seems to be the favorite, though the Frazier horse ‘* Polka’’ is expected to give ® good account of herself. Immediately sfter the sweepstakes, a scrub race of short tailed, stock-l ponies. mules, jacks, hack and omnibus horses, will come off. On Monday other races will take place, and they will then probably be heightened in in- tensity. as any moment after that date they will be liable to be interrupted in consequence of the action of the Board of Aldermen on Monday night, which body will then, doubt- less perfect the amendatory act, which has passed the Common Council, enabling m: trates to fine, and enforce fines, for fast driving. Sipgwatx Notes.—The following lines by Wisse Mary Aun” were suggested by a recent shep- up: Winen sidewalks are but icy slopes, Hemmed in with s: drift, I note the man who, at hie door, And others there obliged to pass of ere 0) to At risk of body even, i Will think that man may not fall here, And yet fall short of heaven ! Somstaing New.—Last night was a season of great interest at the Ryland Chapel Fair, on the Island. A friend of the ladies had of- fered a handsome copy of the ‘‘ Gems of Brit- ish Poetry” to the gentleman who would bring tho largest number of ladies to the room and pay for them atthe door. At nine o'clock the contest was decided, and the premium awarded to Lysander H Trovk, Esq., private secrotary to General Cass, who in his great zeal had in- troduced twenty nine brignt-cyed Inasies to heighten the attractions of the oecasion. Tho book was presented by Rev. Mr. Stecl, and received with | Sree grace by the lucky con- testant. The Fair will continue for several evenings.
