This evening. there is a reception atthe residence of Mr Seeretary Guthrie. NTERES' _ Screnr: Isvestigatio: A meeting of distinguished Savans was h this morning at the corner of Tenth street and Pennsylvania avenue, (south side,) to deter- mine the character of certain phenomena de- veloped there, in the shape of two immense conieal projections of earth, of which nobody— not even the street commissioner—was able to give any satisfactory account. Various theories were broached, as to the nature and cause of these upheavings: Professor Guyascutus was of the opinion that they were of volcanic origin, and he had been at some pains to ascertain their geolicical char- acter, with the followingcurious results: The peo formation bore a remarkable resem- lance to the paving stones of modern times, demonstrating conclusively, that the vaunted discoveries of the age, are nothing more than ations, and adaptations of nature’s works. Upon this formation there rested a stratum of marine b:valvular testacea similar to oyster shells, mixed with stalks of gigantic plants, of the carboniferous period. Prof @. was confident these were not cab- bage stalks, though from their close resem- blance they were well calculated to deceive the inexperienced eye. Upon this stratum there was a deposit of guartze of dirty water, the peculiar aroma of which, had offered con- siderable impediment to the march of scien- tifie research, but his labors had finally been rewarded by the discovery of a fine specimen of argilaceous slate,—singularly enough, with a pencil attached toit,—also aspecimencf trap, or rather the spindle of one, baited with cheese. In consequence of having received a severe fall, when these masses were first brought to his notice, he was able to exhibit seme re- markable specimens of blue gveiss (knees?) From the suddennese with which these cones had developed—from their sulphurous and ungent odor, and from other circumstances, ie hadcome to the conclusion that Tenth ker, and the Presidert—12. | street is rapidly becoming voleanie, and that jane tion may be looked for at any moment. ; # Links was of the opinion that these mounds were Indian tumz/i, of the character f those discovered in the Western States. | He Lad investigated them to some extent, and to a considerable depth with the handle of his umbrelia, and his researches had demon- strated the presence in those mounds of bones of great size. If these were not the bones of gigantic Indian chieftains, what bones were they’ He could not subscribe to the plausi- ble, but dangerous theory, that they were or- dinary beet dones, nor that the curious speci- mens of Indian wampum discovered in the same mound, were nothing but common horn buttons. If the beautiful and sublime theo- ries of science were thus to be materialized and degraded by the practical leveling ten- dencies of the age, where are we to stop? Prof. Daffodowndilly was inelined ie halievs that these bodies were of a meteoric nature. The attention of astronomers had been attract- ed for some time to the singularly accelerated motion of some of the planetary worlds—to the gradual opening out of the earth's orbit, and to its rocking to and fro upon its plane of mo- tion with a very perceptible wobble, all in- dieating some great disturbing influence or Some great displacement of matter by which the earth's centre of gravity had been changed. The discovery of these large meteoric masses afforded the desired solution. The astronomic eye would see ni a glance that such an extra- ordinary displacement of matter must result in the general derangement of all the ordinary laws regulating planetary motion. Prof. D. announced his intention to write immediately to Professors Bond and Mitchell, of the Cambridge and Cincinnati Observato- ries, asxing them to search the heavens to as- certain if any of jhe asteroids are missing—if this fact was demonstratey ihen 'et them point their telescopes in the predictéd diree tion as in the case of the planet Lovefrier, and he would stake his scientific reputation upon tho prediction that the missing bodies would be found planted at the corner of Tenth street and the Avenue, Washington, D C. Uther Professors put forth other specula- tions, and the meeting finally adjourned with- out coming to any conclusion, after having appointed a committee to sit upon and wateh any new features of these developments. Criminay Courr.—$he jury is still out in the case of Edwards. The entrances w the ebdurt are pretty well blocked up—partly by groups of people waiting for the verdict of the jury, and partly by the crowds of “ poor folk,” white, black; brgwn, @u¢ gtraw-colored, who are huddled iogether at the entranee to the Mayor's office waiting for an order for wood. { Many of the applicants are doubtless in real ngea, lizt it was stated at the meeting of the Board of Aldermen on Monday night that in some cases {he applicauss were owners of «i by the Court, showing | houses, agd of considerable means. — Tue Turarre will donbilags attract a good audience to-night.
