EVENIN = G STAR. ———— Cacrca Depication.—The dedication of the spacious and elegant Baptist church edi- fce, on Thirteenth street, between G@ and H streets, Which was to have taken place yester- day, has been postponed until next Sunday. Rev. Dr. Fuller, of Baltimore, will deliver the morning discourse, Rev. Dr. Burrows, of: Richmond, the discourse in the afternoon, and Rev Dr. Teasdale, the pastor, wil! occupy the pulpit at night. his edifice is 100 feet long by 56 wide, and has the basement rooms above ground, with a magnificent audience room above the base- ment story. The ceiling and walls are taste- fully frescoed, the seats are all cushioned, the floors carpeted throughout, and the whole is well lighted with gas. The spire is 160 feet high, and was designed by Thos. U. Walter, Esq. The bell weighs 2,163 pounds, and is from the foundery of Jones & Hitchcock, Troy, N. Y., and was presented by Chas. W. Skin- ner and Richard Felton, s., of North Car- olina. The carpenters’ work was executed in art by Samuel! Wise and in part by Jonathan ader ; the bricklaying by John Gregory; the lastering by Mr. Webster; the fresooing by r. Shutter; the painting by the Messrs. Finch; the stone work by Mr. Rutherford ; the roofing by Mr. Harover; the upholstery by Mr. Blair, and the gas fitting by Mr. Sehi- velly—all reflecting much credit on the skill and competency of the mechanics engaged. The organ, one of the largest in the city, is from the manafactory of Appleton & Co., Bos- ton, and is said to be a fine instrument. The services of dedication cannot fail to be interesting, and many will doubtless be pres- ent to witness them A Facr ror “ tae Bioomer.’’—It fell to our lot Istely to follow in the wake of a beau- tiful Miss, who, encumbered with a hoop of the largest calibre, was endeavoring to work her way through a narrow passage in a snow drift. She had a time of it! The philanthro- pic digger of the path had evidently not ca!- culated upon the contingency of a lady's hoop going through—and go through it would not So the lady raised the hoop and its surround- ings just a trifle. and tried again, developing by the movement » neatly-turned ancle, and a perceptible trace of embroidered skirt, which, a8 we are partial to the ladies, and like to see all we can of them, we did not object to. But as the drift deepened, it became painfully evi- dent that a retreat was inevitable; and re- treat she did, blushing like a peony, and thus was this young lady compelled to make a cir- cumbendibus of two or three squares because she wore the hoop instead of the Bloomer cos- tume. Extra aonptvary SrikitvAL MANIFESTATIONS at §r. Jonn’s ano Trisity Cavurcars!— “*Mercury”’ tells us in this morning’s “Sun” that Right Rev. Bishop Whittingham preached in St. John’s Church in the morning, and ad- ministered the rite of confirmation to a num- ber of converts. In the evening he officiated at Trinity Church, and at the close of his ser- mon performed similar solemn services.’” Now, this must have been a spiritual man- afestatron of Bishop W., for hodily he has not reached the city, he having been detained in Baltimore by the weather and the state of his health. The confirmation rites at St. John’s Church, Trinity Church, and Grace Church, have conscquently been deferred for two weeks, or until January 27th. Axotaer Daning Atrewrr At Roppery.—A bold attempt was made to break into the jew- elry store of D. Hirsch, No. 34 Louisiana avenue, in broad daylight, between 2 and 3 o clock p.m., of yesterday. The side shutter next the door was broken in two places, and an opening made through the glass of the window. but the thief or thieves were proba- bly interrupted at this juncture, as nothing was taken away. Mr. Hirsch is a Hungarian, lately removed here from New York, and the probability is that the parties who attempted the robbery have followed him from the latter place. Cuear ovr your Gutters, and allow the dammed up ice-water achannel and free pas- sage, else the side-walks and streets will be overflowed, and then, perhaps, with a hard freeze the future will be a trifle more slippery than the past, which will be a ‘‘consumma- tion’’ not very devoutly to be wished. The gutters and crossings are in an awful condi- tion, as many a pedestrian has had occasion to ascertain. Sleighing seems to have been brought up with short turn; indeed it is dangerous driving a horse upon the streets, in consequence of the treacherous holes in the half-frozen ice and snow. Tne Bioower has a thorough-going ‘‘strong- minded” article on the first page, in whic she proclaims her intention to wear masculine habiliments, (thovgh forbidden in the Bible so to do,) and evidently considers herself some- thing of a martyr. As it is admitted by all that martyrdom is a source of soul comfort, wwe hall not aim another “‘poisonous arrow’’ at her short skirts, but let her “ bear her cross’ and her “ bloomer’ as best pleases her. Selah! Franaurs Bary.—Next Thursday will be niversary of the birth of the Printer »pher, who did so much to elevate his country in the estimation of the world. The fire company in this city which so worthily bears his name, will celebrate the occasion by a Ball, which will be a magnificent affair. The attendance will, doubtless, be large, as the reputation of the Franklin's balls can but attract all lovers of the merry dance. Tre Hor at Willards’ on Saturday evening, ener the weather, was the most brilliant and pleasant of the season. We learn that the usual grand com- plimentary ball given by the proprietors to the lady guests, will take place about the first of February, and that it is the intention of the Mesers. Go and hear them if you wish to pass a pleasant evening. : Frac Presextariox.—At the large and agreeable bail given by the ‘‘Union Guards,” on the 8th, a splendid silk American Flag War presented to the corps by the ladies, through Francis McNerhany, Esq., who made Capt an sppropriate address Reese, in a beat and eloquent speech, received this fine testimonial to the merit of bis command.
