The heuse must be en- jarged, or we shail be obliged to turn the help- jess orphan from our door. We cannot well mmodate more than three children be- sides those we already number. Our subscrip- tion list continues very small. Some of the reverend clergy have kindly responded to our call, and their collections have greatly as- sisted in enabling us to meet our expenses. To whom can we look but to our generous friends, and doubtless there are those around us whose attention has not been called to this pouse of the destitute and orphan child who will be willing to aid us in enlarging our puilding. Are there net those who will pledge themselves in this incomparable charity’ However thrilling others may be in their oi sist in the work of the family; the boys are made useful in various ways. All are taught ‘to read and write, and instructed in the Scrip- tures. Six premiums are awarded to six of our orphan girls for work done, one also to the matron for work exhibited at the National Fair. We return our thanks to Dr. Nairn for medicines when required; to Dr. Palmer for attendance when called upon; to the Rev. Mr Eckard, for visiting the Asylum once a week, and instructing the children in the Scriptures. It would give us great pleasure if the ministers of the Gospel would more fre quently visit our institution; much good we belicve might be done. La Grange, though occasionally wanting in the volume of physical t papa of sential to a perfect rende: of this great conception, fully sustained her claim to his- trionic talent. In the new American prima donna, Miss Hensler, we think we see the promise of a vocalist destined to occupy a prominent posi- tion in the lyric drama, possessing a mezzo soprano of much quality and great facility of execution. Pollione and QOroveso, by Signors Salviani and Gasparoni, were admirably rendered; and the rich choruses, sustained as they were by the highly effective accompaniments, were really superb. We commend the spirit of enterprise which induced the manager to furnish our city with operatic representations ; and if success as not been so great as was anticipated and deserved, the cnuse may be found in the unu- sual severity of the weather. It was also bad policy to select the night of the President’s jevee, which is a prominent attraction to strangers and the fashionable society. ‘Tax Bexevouent are informed that Mrs. Bishop, (already the mother of eleven boys and two girls,) gave birth on Wednesday night to three boys, making a Larges of sixteen child- ren hey are in need of aid, and we feel confident that We have only to call the atten- tion of the benevolent, especially the ladies, to this opportunity for proving their generosi- LS Gifts can be left at the rosidence of Mrs, jishop, E street, south, between Third and Four-and-a-half streets, north side, or at the counting room of the Evening Star. Vehicles on wheels are voted entirely behind the age. All sorts, sizes, and shades, of people, are bound to have a run upon run- ners. Warca Retprxs.—There were no cases at the Guard House last night, except those of persons coming in for lodging. These have multiplied to such a degree during this cold weather, that the accomodations there are in- adequate for the emergency. ALEXANDRIA CORRESPONDENCE. ALEXANDRIA, Jan, 13, 1856 The delay of the Orange cars in this early portion of the week, caused quite a famine at Gordonsville. The Richmond train brought up a large crowd, whose appetites, whetted by the frosty air, made sad havoc with the edi- bles and drinkables—chicken gave out in an hour; ham followed suit; steaks went the way of all flesh;-the remaining meats were soon minus, and befere night, for love or money, nothing could be had but crackers and gourd- seed whisky. Night came on ; py hun- Sty people came down upon the Orange rail- road ; soft planks were in demand during the night ; white pine, at a large premium, whilst other varieties were qnoted at various rates, bey pao on their contiguity to the stove, &c. ** Morn came, and brought no cars.”” Fresh appetites and no breakfast. The army that swore in Flanders was not acircumstance to the famished crowd that fumed and fretted at the Gordonsville depot. At last the whistle told cheering news, and three such cheers as hungry men, in expectation of a good dinner only can give, welcomed the Alexandria train, Accidents from the severe weather have not yet ceased. On the morning of yesterday a respectable citizen ot Fairfax was found on the road leading to Cameron Run, frozen to death. The horse, from which he had fallen, was found beside him, and, until lead away, would not leave the body. St Mary’s Sunday School propose to-mor- row afternoon a distribution of premiums to the deserving children of the school. Rev. James EK. Donelan, of Washington, will offici- ate, and the services will be varied by vocal music from the children. The soup house opened at its new location, and large numbers of the needy availed them- selves of its bountiful supply of wholesome food. We feel confident that this most estima ble and efficient charity will not lack the cor- dial support of our citizens. Ami. Vacerxation.—A medical question much debated in France of late years has once more come up for discussion, and this time with au- tuerity. The Acadamie of Medicine has an- nounced ‘the physical and moral degenera- tion of the human race caused by vaccina- tion,’’ as a subject to be argued at their meet- ings. The argument can hardly fail to possess much interest ; and, while waiting the result, it may be remarked that there are physiolo- gists in this country, some of them eminent in their profession, who hold vaccination to be, on the whole, a questionable benefit.
