Proressor MITCHELL At THE SMITHSONIAN Issritete.—Notwithstanding the severity of the weather the large lecture room of the In- ute was filled last night, the attraction being the second lecture of Prof. Mitchell upon astronomy. We would particularly call the attention of readers to this admirable serics of lectures. Previous to the commencement of the lecture, there was a general buzz, and turning cf heads n the direction of the door upon the appear- ance in full dress of ‘the Bloomer,’’ the in- terest, no doubt, being considerably height- ened by her late piquant controversy with “Sally Sunflower.” Prot. M. commenced with a rapid recapitu- lation of the mighty discoveries of Kepler and N d spoke at some length of the great ion in astronomical researches made by covery of the law of gravitation—hither- ty astronomers had been groping in the dark with no clue toguide them through the mighty labyrinth. Mr. Jarrett has been for some time past arranging the production of this iece, and we are very agreeably disappointed m having the play produced with ak an ad- mirable cast. The Sir Peter being Mr. Henry Placide ; Joseph Surface, Mr J. W. Wallack, jr.;. Charles Surface, Mr. J. Murdoch ; Crabtree, Mr. Thomas Placide; Careless, Mr. A. H. Davenport; Lady Teazel, Miss Lizzie Weston; Mrs. Candor, Mrs. Buckland, (lato Miss Kate Horn;) and many other names of first class artists, are in the bills. As a matter of course, the expenses attend- ing this play are very heavy, and Mr. Jarrett has consequently raised the prices as follows : Dress circle and parquette, $1; Reserv seats, 50 conts extra; Orchestra $2 50; Pri- vate boxes, $15. These prices may seem ex- travagant, but when it is considered that Mr. Jarrett is at some fifteen or sixteen hundred dollars extra expense, our theatre going pub- lic will see at once that the manager is not un- reasonable. Crnuxat Court.—After we left the court yesterday, Wm. Eliason alias Lawrence was convicted of larceny; Laskey for defence. Manual Price, who was convicted of larceny, (three ases,) was sentenced to one year in the jail. James claget, (colored,) was acquitted of larceny ; R. R. Crawford for defence. Jos- Thomas, (colored,) charged with larceny, was acquitted; J. T. Devlin, jr., for defence. Wm Moody, (colored,) was ‘acquitted of lar- ceny in two cases; Ratcliffe for defence. Lambert Tree, jr., Esq., was, on motion of Mr. W. A. Maury, admitted as an attorney of this court. To-day, Jos. Talbot submitted to an assault, and was sentenced to two weeks in jail and to py 2 fine of $20. Charles White, who was convicted of larceny a week ago, was sen- tenced to two years and six months in the penitentiary, _ Presenration.—There wasa festive gather- ing of tho President’s Mounted Guard on Christmas day, at the residence of their com- mander, Captain Peck, who was unexpectedly presented with a full suit of citizen’s attire. Corporal McCutchen spoke in behalf of the donors, and after Captain Peck had replied, he invited the gentlemen present to partake of an entertainment prepared by his lady. Fountains of living water apparently, gush up at several places on the side-walk in front of Lafayette Square. Water, like political aspiration, will find its lovel. A Batt As 18 A Bart.—A hall answering to the above heading will be given daring the coming month (January) by the journeymen bookbinders of this city. Our knowledge of the gentlemen composing this body justifies us in stating that it will be a ball worthy the patronage of our citizens. Their advertise- ment will soon appear. A Porrrart of Hon. Geo P. Marsh, exhib- ited at the National Hotel, is much admired for its fidelity of expression, correct drawing, and effective coloring. It is by Wood, the celebrated New York artist, who has a studio at the National Hotel. Scrrene Court.—Yesterday, the argument in the case of Jecker, Torre, and Company, ct al., appellants, vs. Jobn B. Montgomery was opened for the appellants by Mr. Coxe, who was followed by Mr. Key for the appellee; and then the court adjourned. AccibENTAL.—We learn from Capt. Birch that the cut he got upon the hand Christmas night wasa very slight affair, and was received quite accidentally while he was endeavoring to remove some persons rather noisily disposed from the National Hotel. In Consequence of the severe cold, Centre Market was this morning very thinly attend- ed both by sellers and buyers. For CaristvAs times the city is unusually quiet, and the Guard House comparatively empty. An Irishman named William Me- Bride, was rescued from the canal last night in a nearly frozen condition, by members of the Auxiliary Guard, headed by Capt. Birch. He had been “ taking something with a friend’? and on his way home had stepped into the canal, and like Yorick’s Starling “could’at get out.’’ A rope was passed around him and he was drawn out, a wetter, but a wiser man !
