ee LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Tue AmoskeaG VeTeRANs were delighted with the attentions shown them yesterday by the naval and marine officers. At the Marine headquarters they were received by the en- tire force, under arms, and cordially wel- comed by Gen. Henderson. After an inter- change of military salutations, the Marines escorted the Veterans to the navy yard, where Com. Forrest, with his officers, was in readi- ness to show the extensive works of the estab lishment. The saluting battery pealed forth a welcome, and nothing was omitted which could interest the visitors. Experiments in gunnery were made with the howitzers, which threw shot and shell with unerring accuracy ; and Lieut. Dahlgren even had a twenty-four pounder cast, that every part of the manufac- ture of these beautiful pieces might be seen. Aiter visiting the workshops, the copper-roll- ing mill, the new frigate, the trophy room, and other departments, the Veterans were invited to the house of Com. Forrest, where they were hospitably entertained. Leaving the yard, the Veterans were es- corted to the Capitol by the Marines, the offi- cers accompanying them. Senator Beil then comiucted his constituents threugh the Capi- tol, showing them the experiments in frescoing the committee-rooms, £c. After diner, they visited the Gallery of the National Institute, and the model hall of the Patent Office, where they were cordially re- ceived by the gentlemen in charge, who took pains to show the many curious objects under theireare. The uniform of Washington—so similar to that worn by the Veterans—was to them an object of especial attention. In the evening, the Veterans, escorted by the officers of the Washington volunteer ragi- ment, visited the White House, by invitation of the President. The East Room and other saloons were brilliantly lighted, while the Marine Band, stationed in the hall, discoursed stirring str - On marching into the East Koom the Veterans were greeted by the Pres- ident, who had also invited the officers of the army now in Washington to meet them. With the veterans Jesup, Churchill, Lawson, Abert, and others who occupy high positions, were the younger officers who now bear the brunt of Indian warfare, all in full uniform. The members of the Cabinet were also present, with the New Hampshire delegation in Con- gress. At nine o’clock, the President, without cere- mony, invited his guests to partake of a sump- tuous entertainment, (prepared by Gautier.) after which they separated. This hospitable reception by the Chief Magistrate, and the nt paid them, by inviting the officers r serviee, was highly appreciated the Veterans, who will carry from the etropolis grateful recollections of the White couse On their way to quarters the Vetcrans visited the National Theatre, by invitation of the mz: and enjoyed the fine acting of Murdock in plet hceantng. they found a delegation of the municipal authorities, and it was late ere they retired, to rise before sun- ri. The reader will find in the Scar’s adver- tis vlumns, from day to day, the com- pletest list of all the places in Washington where purchases may be made of every de- Scription of goods, wares, and articles sach as are usually bought by our fellow citizens at this season, each merchant and trades- man setting forth therein the peculiar things be bas for sale. We can confidently recom- mend them. because we know them to be men of enterprise—persons who know the value of the nimble sixpence, and there- fore sell for very smal! profits so as to insure the turning over of their capital in trade re- peatedly in the course of the year. To our fellow-citizens engaged in trade we take this asion tosay, that if you really desire to sell your goods, the very best way to make sure of doing that thing, is to advertise in the Star. Look around you wherever you may be on an afternoon, and you will speedily realize the Sincerity of this advice. Out of every five you see reading a newspaper, four at Teading the Star, whether they are ers, members of Congress, mer- chants and mechanics, laborers, (white and evlored,) Government officers, strangers, male or female, young old. In no other city in the world of its size is any other newspaper se universally taken and so eagerly pored over, as the Star is in Washington. The effest of this universality of resort to the Star for information and amusement in the afternoon, is well understood by our old advertisers, many of whom give us ac- counts of the benefits of advertising in our columns to their business, which would be deemed fabulous were we to repeat them here. Those who know how to do business in @ business-like way in these modern times, comprehend the fact thatit is farcheaper and more economical to put their advertisements in the columns of a paper which all persons of both sexes and all Teading ages are ner- vously anxious to peruse daily, than to insert them in half-a-dozen papers the contents of which are little cared for by the community at large. SsiTesontan Lectcre.—There waz a pretty large audience at the Smithsonian Institute last night The lecture by Professer Snell was mainly upon Astronomy, but at the com- mencement he redeemed the promise made at a former lecture i te Architecture by making fome mention of American edifices. In the United States little has been done in the pier quepeens of our churches had Gothic etails, but of course without tl icati of the Old World cathedrals. ition: The Library of the Harvard College at Cambridge was of the Gothic order, and had the ground form of a Cathedral. Trinity Church in New York City was the first speci- men of Norman Gothic and the only one of any -.uportance in the country. In paying a compliment to the present lecture room at the Smithsonian Institute, the speaker said he knew of no other lecture room which equalled itin aby lnportant respect. To bis remarks upon the movements of plane- tary bodie:,he gave a curious and rather Anusing illustration of the disposition of a body te move on its axis of rotation, by the use of sume bits of pasteboard cut in the shape of the South Sea Islanders little missile called the soomerang; which, when, hurled forward in the air, returns to the point from which it was thrown. The lecturer exhibited a real wooden boomerang, but declined experiment- ing with it, as not being familiar with its use, he might hit either the audience or himself. Professor Heury announeed that the next lecture of the nm, would be delivered by Prof. Mitchell, of Cincinnati, upon Astronomy. _ Tas Finst Ansivensary of the Missionary Society of the Assembly's Church, last night, was a fine affair. Noven Arpitcation.—While in at Justice Hollinghead’s this morning, a genteelly dressed stout gentleman, a Philadelphian, he said, and who appeared to have becn on a pretty exten sive spree, entered the office and entreated to be committed or sent somewhere that he could et away from Aimse// and from his associates. ‘he Justice advised him to go to the Infirma- ry, and stay for a while under the care of the Sisters or Obarity, as from his syecarsno: the workhouse would not be likely to suit him. The gentleman availed himself of the recommendation very eagerly, and departed immediately to put itin practice. A case of hog stealing was in progress there, the result of which we did not stayto ascertuin. The parties who were brought before Justice Hollingshead for examination, on the charge of conspiring to defraud by the box ga.ne, were discharged, as no one appeared to identify them, but with the admonition to leave the city as early as possible. PostroneMext.—We learn that the mas- ante which was to have come off at Mun- er’s Assembly Hall this evening has been postponed until to-morrow evening, in conse- quence of the non-arrival of the costumes. A large number have subscribed, and a delight- ful time may be expected. By way of conso- lation to the disappointed, there will be a soireedansant thia evening at Munder’s As- sembly Hall. Tae Waeatuer is truly charming, and the belles are out to-day in such numbers that the broad sidewalks will scarce contain their hoops. The stores are reaping rich harvests, and ‘‘ Christmas gifts’ areindemand. Those who wish to know where the best assortments are, have only to peruse the advertising col- umus of the Star. Tue Jackson Democratic Assocration.— The members, and such as design joining this veteran political organization are reminded that it meets to-night at the Assembly rooms (late Copp’s) on Louisiana avenuo, for the in- auguration of its labors in the approaching campaign. We take it for eed that the attendance will be very large. Court or Ciaims.—Yesterday, the argu- ment in the case of Sturges, Bennett, & Co.. vs. the United States, was resumed in favor of the claimants by Mr. Sargent, who had not concluded his remarks, when the court ad- journed. Kunret’s Dioramas continue to attract crowds of visitors, for the entertainment is varied every evening, and these who have seen it once are sure to go again, Murpoon appears in two characters at the National Theatre on Saturday night—“‘Young Mirabel,”’ in the comedy of the “ Inconstant,” and as ‘‘ Vapid”’ in the ‘‘ Dramatiat.”’ Ivan Goxovin will deliver a lecture on the Russia, in connection with the Eastern war, this evening, at Carusi’s Saloon, at 8 v’clock.
