LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. _ Visir or raz Vererays.—We were forced to abridge our account, yesterday, of the re- ception by the President of the stalwart Vete- rans—introduced to him by their commander as men who “ hail from the land of Blanchard, Goffe, Rod, rs, Stark, the Pierces, (father and sons,) Miller, and MecNeil—men whoge deeds, whose names, shall be remembered as long as Lake George, Ticonderoga, Crown Point, Bunker Hill, Trenton, Princeton, Ben- nington, Saratoga, Monmouth, Yorktown, Ni- agara, Lundy’s Lane, Contreras, Chepulte- —ay, Mexico—shall have an existence in t, in history, or in song.”’ The reply of President Pierce was charac- terized by his wonted eloquence—forcible, sound, yet rong Those officious foreign- ers. who bluster about our national weakness, will do well to bear in mind the President’s happy allusion to the alacrity with whieh gal- lant men are ever ready to defend our starry flag. Nor is there an American heart that will not thrill with pride as it learns from its Chief Magistrate how “ beautiful it is to see the rgies of a martial people, with such capabilities and resources for war, devoted to the arts of peace. It would be fearful to see them exerted in a great struggle of arms. A nation. however, which can readily summon to the field five hundred thousand ‘eure: in- telligent, 1 men, accustomed from Ler E ie to the saddle, and to the use of the ri and the musket,"is not in a condition to invite ageression by any supposed want of ability to repel it.”” Grouped around the President, as he elo- + eal greeted his townmen, were Messrs. rey, Cushing, Davis, Dobbin, McClelland, Campbell, of the Cabinet; Sidney Webster, -» his private secretary; Marshal Hoover; Gen. Jesup, Adjt. Gen. Coo it, Surgeon Gen. Lawson, Col. Abert, and other officers of the Bock, Gov. Baker, Major Kimball, Capt. Ban and other gentlemen from New Hamp- shire, with a blooming array of female beauty. After the reception, the Veterans, escorted by the Washington volunteers, marched to the United States Hotel, where they had comfort- ; provided. Before they arrived the President called in Person, to enquire if he could in any way promote the enjoyment of his friends from the Granite State. It may able quarters be proper, also, to state, that the Veterans Were accompanied by several of their Balti- more hosts, who had been brought as prisoners, ma denier Among them we noticed Capt: e National Greys; Lieut. Callis, of the Montgomery Guarde; Capt. Warner, of the Baltimore a Guards; and Capt. Wm. jaitimore National Blues. Col. Hickey, with his field cfficers, Senator Bell, and 7 ether noted gentlemen, also, Imon. of t! McLain, of the called at Col. Potter's quarters The Veterans were up at an early hour this morning, and their quaint uniforms were seen in different seetions of the city. The roll of the drum at nine brought them into line, in full uniform, without arms or equipments They then left for the Alexandria steamboat wharf, under escort of a detachment of our volunteer officers, commanded by Lieut. Col. Riley. The steamer “George Washing‘on,”” in which they embarked for the hallowed shades of Mount Vernon, has not returned as We go to press, but we doubt not that all en- joyed the trip. We learn that the venerable @. W. P. Custis will escort them around the old Lowe of his: illustrious relative, and that at the ball this evening the “old man elo- went’? will wear the epaulettes originally fastened on his shoulders by him who was “* first in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen.”’ To morrow’s Star will give an account of this pilgrimage to freedom’s shrine, and of the ball to-night. We learn that the vete- Fans propose toremain in Baltimore on Thurs- day, and witness a drill of Major French’s fine command of Light Artillery, at Fort Mc- Heury. This, however, will render it impos sible for them to receive the high honors ten- dered them at Philadelphia, and no itive decision had been made when they left for + Mount Vernon. They are to be received, in New York, on their return, by the fine com- mand of Capt. Vincent. Richly do they merit the cordial itality lavished upon them. Supreur Court —Yesterday, Hon.
