On Tues- day night, Rev. Mr. Samson will deliver his postponed lecture, on “ The Desert of Sinai;” and on Wednesday night Rey. Dr. Sunder- land will deliver another original poem, pre- pared expressly for the occasion. GosHen was s great country for grapes, but We doubt if it caualied California. 1 r. Hen- dricks, Commissioner of the Land Office, has kindly sent us a single cluster of well flavored grapes from the modern Ophir, which weighs two pounds and a half. They taste as well as they look, and if the Register of the Land Office at Los Angelos (who sent them to Mr. H.,) can show such specimens of the produc- tions of his land, we should think he would soon dispose of every quarter section. Surrger Rooms.—Our neighbor across the avenue, Mr Richard Adams, who keeps a popular and fashionable and excellent resiau- rant there, has just added to his estab! ment two fine supper rooms, for the entertain- ment of parties. They were opened for the first time on the night before last, when he entertained in them a large com; of his friends and patrons who were hi, ily @elighted With the good cheer set before them. Hyrprorarny may be in ite way, but no one cares about Sipeetere tealtan marketing. It was cheerless this morning to see the butchers at Centre Market in great- coats, and their purchasers kee ing their um- brellas up as they selected their supplies. When shall we have a market worthy of the Metropolis? Query ?—When a house is to built or re- paired, is it necessary to have the sidewalk and most of the street before the locality blockaded by piles of lumber and rubbish. Several instances of such protracted nuisances are on the Star's Complaint Book, and we eball cail particular attention to them if they are not removed. Fongicy Isrivexce.—Our Cayenne friends will doubtless be indignant to learn that the chestnut roasters on the Avenue are only using the American chestnuts until the foreign crop Jargerand b tter, b fas that the ae r etter, but we fear that the genuine K. N.’s will not eat them. “ c A DELEGATION of our fashionables returned to-day from New York, where they went to attend the wedding of Frank Hampton, Eeq., (a son of Wade Hampton) of South Carolina, to Miss Sarah S. Bexter, daughter of George Baxter. The wedding entertainment is de- scribed as regally magnificent. Court or Ciaiws.—Yesterday, the argu- mentin the case of Starges, Bennet, and on pany vs. the United States was resumed in fa- vor of the claimants by Mr. Abert, who was followed by the Solicitor, who had not conclu- ded his remarks when the court adjourned. Wirgovr Licesse.—Michael O'Bryan has been fined twenty dollars for se liquor without license. This offence against the municipal law is often repeated. And to make the offenders we the mark, requires the activity of the police of the fifth ward. Tuerives.—Some thief or thieves, stole from Mr. Savage's Variety Store, a couple of bird- ages which had been placed at the door for ‘show. The operators had better let bird-cages alone, otherwise they may find themselves in @ cage provided for birds without feathers. Tue Masive Force, at this station, is now composed of Major Terrett; Captains Tyler, Slack aud Tanner; Lieutenants Green, Hays, Cohen and Lewis, with the requisite non-com- amissioned officers and about forty privates. Tae Ascension Cuunca Farr is still in « p- eration at Odd Fellows’ Hall. Although there ‘was not a crowd in attendance last night, owing to the inclement weather, yet a pleas- ant and agreeable time was passed by those who were there. Taz Diorama continues to attract crowds of our citizens, who are pleased with its varied beauties, and somewhat puzzled to divine how the vi changes are produced. It is an especial attractive resort for the juveniles. Mystserics.—Col. Shillington has sent us the ‘‘Mysteries of the Court of the Stuarts,” by William Harrison Ainsworth. Those fond of the marvellous and terrible, should at once purchase this exciting and romantic tale. Sr. Parnicn’s Cuurcn is soon to haves new organ. That one which has been in use there since 1805, was purchased from a Protestant church in Virginia. in which Gen Washing- ton once worshipped. Tue Scorr Gvarps are sparing no exertions to make their Ball on Monday evening a bril- liantentertainment. The Amoskeag Veterans are invited, and there will, doubtless, be a numerous and gay attendance. Istexesting Exercises will beheld at the Assembly Chareh, corner of 5th and I streets, on Wednesday evening next, by the members of the Missionary Society. Tue Baus on Tucsday evening in honor of the Amoskeag Veterans, bids fair to be the Ball of the season. Those who wish to attend should proeure tickets without delay. Proressor Sxetr’s lecture, last evening, was well attended The model of the Capital, as it will appear when completed, attracted general attention, and was much admired. Mazerpa.—This unequalled exhibition of the intelligence of the trained hoise Rocket, combined with dramatic attractions, will draw a crowd to-night at the Nationa! Theatre. A Ssower, yesterday afternoon, just as Congress adjourned, drove ail the belles from sy ao, and created a demand for um- brellae. Tae RAIN here was the remnant of a Yankee snow storm. After waiting for tho last two or three days for a proper tide, in consequence of adverse winds, the deagnated signal was, at 9 o’clook this morning, displayed, and thousands wend- ed their way to the navy yard from Norfolk, Portsmouth, and the surrounding country, to witness the launch of the steam frigate Ro- anoke. Every thing being satisfactorily arran, by our model Navi Constractor, Bamectn artt, and the indefatigable Master Builder, John L. Porter, at precisely fifteen minutes after 12 o'clock, the gallant vessel glided into her destined element amidst the cheers of thousands, the strains of music, and the boom- ing of cannon—the ship Pennsylvania it~ ing her with a salute of 21 as she kissed the glassy of the river Elizabeth. This was the most beautiful launch ever witnessed at this navy yard; and all engaged in its preparation deserve credit for the admirable manner in which the affair was conducted Although not the first of the steam reigns lauuched (which no doubt would have been the case but for the epidemic of the past Season,) there is not one that can su the Roanoke in the beauty of her model or the excellence of her workmanship.
