Holland's Theatre, the handsomest in the kingdom, was destined to a short existence, being totally burnt down on the night of Feb- Tuary, 1509, when it bad stood only fifteen years. The following authentic anecdete in nection with the building bas not before, we belive, appeared in print: Holland could never obtain a settlement, or even an interview on the subject with Sheridan. He hunted him for weeks and months at his own house, at the theatre, at his usual reaorts, but he was nowhere to be seen. At last he tracked him to the stage-door, rushed in in spite of the of the burly porter, and found the on the stage conversing with a party en whom he had invited to show e theatre. Sheridan saw Holland proaching, and knowing that esoape was this time impossible, put bold face on the matter. “Ah ' my dear fellow,’’ exclaimed he, “you are the very mau 1 wanted to see—you have come most apropos. Z um truly sorry you have had the trouble of calling on meso often, but now we arc met, in a few minutes I shall be at liberty; we oan then go into my room together and settle our affairs. But first you i ide an important question here. Some of these gentlemen tell me there are com- plaints, and loud ones, that the transmission of sound is defective in your beautiful theatre, that, ia fact, the galleries cannot hear at all, and that isthe reasen why they have become sy of Inte’ “Sound defective! Not reiterated the astonished architect, pale and almost staggertng back: “why, itis the moat perfect building that ever ‘was erected; I'll stake my reputation on it; the complaint is most groundless.” “So [ say,’ retorted Sheridan; “but now we'll bring the que.tion to issue definitely, and then have ® paragraph ortwoon the papers. Do you, Holland, go and place yourself at the back of the upper gallery, while I stand here on the stage end talk to you.’ ‘Certainly,’’ said Holland, “with the greatest pleasure.”’ A ern was provided with atrusty guide, and ¥ went the architect through a labrynth of dark and winding passages, almost a day's journey, until he reached his distant and ¢l- evated post. “Now, Mr. Holland,” cried bh nm, “are you there, and ready?” lan =5 * was the immediate answer. “Gan you dearme?” ‘Perfectly, perfectly, Mr. Sher- Ydan'* “Then I wish you a very good morn- ing” So saying, Sheridan disappeared, and Was (wo or three miles off before Holland got down from the gallery. Another long interval occurred ere he was able to chase the fugitive to his lair again. fa “This war,” said a commercial gentle- wan to a dandy, ‘will bea terrible hindrance to all kinds of business."
