H., it has adopted a martial garb and diseipline as indicative of the desire of its members to sustain the Union and to execute its laws. But the gentlemen in its raaks, many of whom occupy or have occupied high officia fitions, have also entered this Association for social enjoyment. \f ample means, and agreeable manners, they carried the hearts of the frigid Bostonians by storm last year, and we feel confident that they wil! well sustaim the high reputation of the ‘ Gran- ~ ite State.” Liberal arrangements are being made to give them a military reception on Monday, and on Tuesday night there will doubtless be a full representation of “fair women and brave men’’ at the ball to be given under the auspices of our volunteer regiment. Courr or Crains>—Yesterday, the case of Harvey Holgate vs. the United States was called by the court. This isaclaim against Government for remuneration for the joss of a quantity of timber which was seized in Ver- mont in 1814, by order of Commodore McDo- nough, taken into the State of New York, and there libelled, condemned, and sold, without the knowledge of the claimant. The argu- ment in this case was opened by Mr. Rock- well, who held that compensation is due on the ground that the in New York void, and that the original seizure was Without cause and illegal. The ment in behalf of the Government was made by the Solicitor, who was followed by Mr. Rockwell, who concluded his remarks, and the case was submitted for the decision of the court.
