The net profit on this single day’s work of converting corn into whiskey is fully $250, or vpwards of $1,500 per week A Dovetn Kuorrwexr.—That portion of the city known as Dumfries was throwa into a tate of excitement yesterday in consequence of the el nt of two wives from their hus- bands Erst case was that of a young weman, who hel been married only a few mouths. We could not learn whether the gay Lothario who went off with this deserting wife left one of his own to mourn ever his ingratitude. This is « singular coincidence that one ueighbor- hwod zhould give birth to two events of like reprehensible character at the eame period — Baltimore Amertqan., The wite destroys the happiness will have the sympa- “ WASHINGTON NEWS AND GOSSIP. fomething of @ Disappointed.--It will be recollected that a few weeks since two or three Know Nothing member? of tho House published a call for a cauons of their party of that body, to assemble yesterday in the House Hall, Thoy were of the wing of the opposi- tion represented by the journaLof our talented, amiable, knowing and ingenuous neighbor in this city and the New York Ezpress in New York, and are vulgarly known 2s “ Hindoos.”’ Well, their party—‘ our party,’’ a8 our in- genuous, knowing, amiable and talented | neighbor is in the habit of styling it in about his cvery other paragraph—duly met, accord- | ing to the call, to the number of ten members | all told, and a little batch of Know Nothing managers of this city, by way of swelling their number, we presume Their heads were duly laid together, with what result further than tho disclosure of the fact that their prospect of organizing the House, after their own desire, had become ‘small by de- grees, and beautifully less,”’ since the original publication of the call for the caucus, which bears evidence of the expectation of its au- | thors that they would have been joined, not only by the Southern Know Nothings, hus by those of the North, in the House, who used | Know Nothingism in the election for a stick with which to break Democratic heads. (Of course, the latter had no idea of going into eatecus with them, for they are (vulgarly speaking) Choctaws rather than Hindoos. The Southern Know Nothings refrained from fraternizing with them, as they have not the slightest idea of swapping off the twelfth sec- tion, for the printing for“ the Organ.”’ it is said on the Avenue thet though no vote was taken, they came to an understanding that it waa useless to press the claims of Mr. iaven, their original candidate for the Speak ership, as the Choctaws, it is evident, will pre- fer to vote for an out-and-out southern Demo- erat if necessary to beat him. They are also said to have come te the conelusion to make their real fight forthe printing on the so oft defeated Mr. Sargeant, whilom a caz- didate for the Clerkship. We presume this is the result of our talented, amiable, knowing and ingenuous neighbor's sz7~ pos in offerirg up the 12th seetion, which has so disgruntled his late political friends from the South, without attracting for him a single Choctaw supporter. Mr. Sargeant is the man of all others for them to fail back upon, as he was never known, as far as we have heard, to have any leaning (except towards office) so decided as that he eould not be any thing—12th section man or bot—as occasion might requir In the matier of the Speakership we may add, they are snidto have concluded to fall back on Mr. Humphrey Marsha’l of Kentucky, in the Lope that the Democrats will eventually be influeed to sustain him; whieh, to say the least of it, is very questionable. Mr. Mar- shall is a very clever geatieman indeed, and personally everything one could wish him to be. But in polities he was probably about the most “rentaxkarous’’ Know Nothing who was on the stump last fall, from Maine to Oregon, aud is, of course, quite ss ardently bent on the defeat of whoever the Democrats may nominate for President, a3 any man possibly canbe. He must have lost the furmer eun- ning of his hand if, in the Speakership, he ailed to administer the office tothe end of ng the Deneracy to come outof the game ot the session, losers of all they can poszib!y be stripped of Ly the most adroit management of matters so as to make them teil against the unterrified at every turn of the legistative cards. The Republican Farty.—We hear. and sre satisfied of the truth of the report, that there is to be nv caucus of the RK cpublicen members of the House. Mr. Lewis D. Campbell is their candidate for Speaker. Our belief is that he can run uptoSs or 90 votes at most. This number is much beyond the Republican strength. For the difference, Mr. C. may thank his extensive personal popularity, which grows out of the frankness and manliness of his character—qualitic: whieh all one’s sensi~ ble opponent respect. We do not think, howevy- er, that itiz possible for himto poll the vote of 2 single southern member, notwithstanding his recommendation that his party in Ohio should accept the Know Nothing platform as made iu Philadelphia. He bas, however, re peatedly repudiated the idea, on the floor of the Hall, of being a respecter of platforms, it matters not when, where, or by whom u . It is utterly. impossible that be can be the Speaker, though vote ly against him w to se f those who will d really prefer m there iv any mau who carries two faces upon questions involving the rights of the South nota few Ye Patriots of ye Land.—Ifthe unsophis- tieated reader desires proof that the spirit of sm—the disposition to serve one’scoun- try—still exists and is with a large portion of our fellow-citizens, as in revolutionary days, an all-absorbing pacsior, let him pay a visit to-night Letween the hours of seven and ten, to the reception halla cf the different hotels of Washington. Inecach of them he will proba- bly find from fifty to one hundred individuals congregated, some of them cvidently just shaking the dust of steamboat or railroad of their persons, and all eagerly discussing the absorbing topic; the probable complexion of the organization of the House Nearly one half of those on whom his eyea may rest in such places between these hours, are aspi- rants for eleetive offices under the House, or, egain, aspirants for porition under thizer that gentleman who is to rely directly on the favor cf the members for the triumph of his hopes. ‘There is an increasing restless feverishness about the eyes and manner of these gentle- men, from which an experienced man around Washington, may tell one of them at a glance They ¢lectioncer not only with members but with all supposed to able directly or indi- rectly to influence a vote when the important contests come off. A large number of them are, of course, gentlemen who lost office under the present National Adminiztration because they took apon themselves the obligations of Know Nothingisw, one of whichis to keep no Demoeratic-party man in office if that can be prevented or avoided So far as the public can pergeive, the mem- bers are refraining from giving pledges which they consider binding, as to how they design voting. Yot it is hard to find an aspirant for an office dircetly in the gift of a majority of the House (except for the clerkship) who is not apparently satisfied that he bas pledged to him, by the most sacred of all obligations, almost votes enough to insure bis election. Happy gentlemen, all of them, just now; but from the feverish anxiety evident from their countepances, there does come a whisper that, after all, they fail to feel as “cock-suro’’ as they profess to be We pity a man who is a candidate for asy- thing, from the very bottom of our soul. Se far as comfort is concerned, one had better be roasting on a gridiron than fretting, frying, and stewing over hopes excited for the favor of any man or men whatever. {t is fortunate for our talented, amiable, knowing, aud ingenuous neighbor that he has the House printing quite as surely as though the election was over, and he had been dectared the lucky dog—or he, too, frould be siighily feverish this afternoon; for, the anti-Hindoo Know Nothings, or Republicans (inter nos, reader) scout the idea of voting for him on the strength of his change of front on the 12th section, {t is cruel in them to place so little faith in his promises for the fature— in his last promulged platform of principles. He deserves better at their hands, for though waging dire war on them until their votes are absolutely necessary to secure him the print- ing, just now does he not stand up for their right to full communion of members of ‘‘the American party?” Tho Vacant Brigadier Generalship.—We made a statement a few days since concerning the filling of this position that requires a slight correction. Thus, the resignation of Brig. Gen. Hitchcock made no vacaney as brigadier general, he having only the brevet rauk of that grade. He was colonel of the second regiment of infantry, and the vacancy has been filled by the promotion of Lisut. Cel. Ff. Lee, of the sixth infantry. There is, however, a brigadier general to be appointed, under the act of Congress of March 3, 1855, section 8, and thar is the appointment to which we referred in our article of a few days since. Among others, Gen. Harney, the commander of the Sioux expedition, is spoken of as a prominent candidato. Senator Douglass.—Last night, as well az the night before, the hails cf the different hotels of this city were full of a rumor of the recep- tion of a telegraphic dispatch announcing the death of this gentleman at Terre Haute. On both occasions a painful sensation, indeed, was created among the large crowds in attendance in these places. We sxtisfied ourself in a few moments that the story was wholly without foundation. We have positive information converning the stato of Mr. D.’s health up to Monday night last, when he was not only in noimmediate danger, but was apparently so rapidly recovering as that he expected ina few days to be able to leave Terre Haute. The Columbus, Ohio, City Bank Case.— The reader will recollect, that under one of the arrangements of Mr. Seeretary Corwin, the City Bank cf Columbus, Ohio, undertook to transfer to New Uriesns $100,000, which stuck tothe Ginzers of some one in the man- agement of the concern, on the way. The Government's suit againat the “ institution” for its recovery was tried a few days since, and owing to a disagroemont of the court on a of law involved, the jury were discharged without rendering a verdict. The ease is to 8° directly to the Supreme Court on the disa- greement aboye mentior A Hurder—Tho shvoting of forral by Walker was wot the judicial act as repre sented. Admitting the legality of Walker's governmeat in Nicaragua—which is in itself preposterous—he had no right to court martial any man for treazon, it being a political and ® military offence. Under these circum- stances, the shooting of Corral under the pre- tence vf executing a sentence of the court mar- tial rendorcd against him, was unmitigated murder, aud nothing else. Another Candidate—We understand that Mr. J. W. Smith, of Vt., a brother of Frank Smith, Esy., of the Globe’s House reporting ccrps, is a candidate for the post of sergeant- st-arms. In polities he is said to be a Repub- lican (anti-Hindoo) Know Nothing. ’ A Site Selected —A site for the location of the new Custom House, U. 8. The city councils, at their last meeting, after coming to a dead lock twice on the ad- mission of the Alexandria and Washington railroad, appvited a committee of conference, which, being unable to concur in a report, the two Boards seemed agreed to disagree, and the lower branch adjourned. Thoreupon, the Aldermen reconsidered the vote by which they had previously refused to coneur with the Council, and adopted a resolution, directing that a poll be opened atthe Council Chamber, on the first Monday in December next, under the superintendence of Jukn Leadbeater, John Green, John N Harper, and Saml. R. Adams, to ascertain the sense of the voters of this city upon the ey of admitting the Alexendria and Washington railroad within the corporate limits of the city; said poll to be headed in separate columns: “ For Admis- sion,” and ‘ Against Admission.”’ Those Voting for admission shall state their prefer- ence tor one of the three following streets, into ich said road shall be permitted to pass, viz: St. Asaph street, as far south as Princess street; Columbia street, as far south as Queen street; and Alfred, as tar south as Queen street. But as notice of their refusal to convene had been given to the Council, some persons insist that the resolution was not legitimately before the Aldermen, and required joint aetion to re- new it. There certainly seems a lack of for- mality and peg of the etiquette of one Board towards the other which all the next meeting of the Council will give oecasion for some lower branch orators to splurge, but the proceeding appears to have met all the re- uirements of Bes city _— and thus is per- feetly legal Lt might, perhaps p: have Noknenion outof pat by the Prete of the upper branch, but when once passed the in- formelityiscured.
