EVENING STAR.| LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Rewer ro Norrorx axp Portsuoura — Now that, happily, the pestilence which «> fearfully prevailed in those cities, recently, has altogether disappeared, we oan recur with pleasure, not in a spirit of boasting, to the generous and liberal contributions of the peo- ple of Washington toward the reliof of the «i-- tressed in the yellow-fever infected localities. We have no means of ascertaining, from | data, the precise amount of money freely | ven with a view of administering comfort to | the suffering victims of the scourge, but we | may mialy venture the assertion fin Wash- | jagton, in proportion to its population, con- tributed at least as much as any other city of the Union, and perhaps more. Fifteen thou- | sand doilars, we think, will come under rather | than over the mark After the greater por- | tion of this sum had been sent to Norfolk and Portsmouth, a meeting of citizens, it will be re- | collected, was convened at the City Hall, and | & general committee, with subordinate divi- sions, 7 to both procure and forward | relief. This general committee report that the aggregate amount received by them in money | was four thousand and twenty eight dollars. They say, “when the lateness of the period in which these calls were made and the gen- | eral pressure of the times are considered, it | cannot but be viewed asa liberal manifesta- tion of the deep sympathy of the public mind in the distresses of their fellow-creatures. | There seemed, indeed, to be but one sentiment | pervading this community, but one motive, to | render the most efficient aid in the most ac- ceptable manner. Besides the above amount, it is known that more extensive contributions, both of money and of clothing, were made | through other channels than this committee.”? | In closing the rts the committee gay they | “cannot withhol: fe expression of their | thankfulness that it hits pleased Providence to | avert the afflicting rod from our somering ei: | bors, and hope with returning health, they may long enjoy their wonted prosperity and | happiness; ao 4 sithough the season of malig- | nant disease has , the committee are fully aware that much suffering will remain | through the approaching winter, which it will | afford them happiness to alleviate by a con- | thn of their exertions ”’ j sach smoke which should find its wa ward and gpward,’’ and out of the chimney, | at the top,“and not inward from the stove- pipe hole, owing to defective arrargements! **A smoky chimney and a scolding wife’ are regarded as among the greatest afflictions towhich a peaceably-disposed and calmly tempered (?) man can be subjected ; but it is | with the first branch cf the subject we have | now to do. We do not mind accommodating a next-door nelgh bor, by permitting him to knock a hole in our ¢i:imney, but we do object to his stove- pipe blowing off its smoke into our business premises. Recent experience has demon- . strated to us that, as the world is not large enough for bitter rivals, in either the field or in the cabinet, or in the affairs of love, each party smarting under an imaginary or rea offence, so it seldom if ever appears that any chimney can contain, at the same time, two Pipes for conducting off the smoke of two.oppo- site fires in full blast. The counter-current, the des vapor, the intermixture of the contrary { forces. all prevent the majestic rising from the chimney-top of that kind of smoke which the 30 graphically deseribed as having ‘‘grace- curled.” hen the room is thick with that intangi- ble substance, the doors must be opened to let it escape; and then it is that a cold stream of air rushes in, and particularly travels over and painfully refrigerates the spinal column. Extinguishing the fire is the next duty necessity, in the programme; and on such fr ty mornings as we had recently, the discomfort may be easily imagined, and, so far as we are couverned, experienced. But to return to the smoke. The day is ast with us to ery over an affecting rcmance, ut the smoky and smoking chimney i: more putential than the greatest powers of the lit- tersteur and poet. Men, stalwart mon, are forced to tears—to sneeze against their wili— to anathamatize the smoke, and to long for the return of genial weather, when no occasivu arises for a resort to artificial heat for the com- fort of the human body. We repeat, ‘ smoky chimney”’ is unendurablo hat must the condition of that man be who has in addi- tion a scolding wife? or a woman who is op- pressed with a scolding husband? Alas! N. B. Lest some of our friends may be ap prehensive that we are still suffering from ti affliction to which we have above referred, it is with almost ineffable satisfaction we state that the difficulties have been adjusted to the “matuai satisfaction’’ of both Stove pipes! Corer or Tramms.—Yesterday, in the case of Willian W. Cox, (who claims $3,339 04 for extra services rendered while a messenger in the office of the Auditor for the Post Offics Department.) Judge Scarborough delivered the opinion of the eourt, deciding that there was no cause of action, holding—Ist. That, under laws organizing the Treasury Depart- ment and its several bareaus, the Secretary alone could authorize the | enemy of any extra serviec in any branch of the Treasury Department. 21. That avolantary courtesy is no ground for suit either at law or in equity, (1 Sanders’s Rep. 372,) and that this doctrine &pplies to the government as well as to indi- viduals. In the case of Robert Robe: city, A. H. Lawrence, Esq., appeared for the claimant. This is a claim for indemnification tor losses arising out of the capture of the ship Experiment, on her voyage from New York to Jamaica, in the year 1805, by a Span- ih privateer, recaptare by a British cruiser, and sale under a decree of a British Court of Admiralty upon a libel filed for salvage by the captors. The amount c aimed for the de- tentiou of the ship, the salvage and other ex- enses, exclusive of interest, is $9.235 44. r. Lawre was followed by the Solicitor, who concluded his remarks C_K. Averiil. Esq.,of New York, and James W. McCulloh, Esq , of Washingtdn city, were swora attorneys of this court. Tie beaux present were fairly overwhelmed with the intensity cf the flashes of bright eyes, and bewildered amid the blooming roses on luscious checks. The hall was crowded, and the music fine. All were infinitely happy. The oer simi- lar clubs of Washington, Georgetown snd Alexandria, as well as many of our mili- tary and fire companies, were oa pa rep- resented. Among the membersof other clubs present, we notieed Messrs. Marceron, M:Na- mee, Eunis, Dobbyn, Tucker and Thompson, of the Terpsichore Club; Messrs.
