T. Hill followed, taking the same views. . Mr. W. L. Penn opposed the admission. The read came in on a graded street that cost the city seven thousand dollars. It was not too late for tho sovereign people of Alexandria to refuse the admission. The road was al- ready too far, and unless next Monday the | people decided to admit them, he would take up the road himself—he had no axe to grind. Mr. W. D. Massey responded. The whole road was mortgaged, and we should soon see the affair bought out by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company. He wished the matter delayed tiil Congress should make some deci- sion in regard to a permanent structure at the Long Bridge. Ho was in favor of a railroad to Washington—a particular scheme—but it was not one that would spoil the turnpike. Mr. C. E. Stuart wanted to ask one ques- tion: Did not the Loudoun and Hampshire branch propose to spoil the turnpike beyond | the Four Mile Run, and‘use the berme bank ‘of the canal on this side of it? He was no friend to the managers of the railroads in this section, but he would cheerfully vote to ad- mit this road.
