EVENING STAR. ate LOGAL INTELLIGENCE. Tae Rocnester Firewex.—We mentioned, yesterday, the arrival of this fine-looking body of firemen, on a brief visit to Washing- ton. They were accompanied by delogations from the Independent, First Baltimore, Vigi- tant, and Washington companies of Baltimore, and “taken care of’ here by a delogation from all the fire companies, excepting the Anacostia. They visited the Capitol, the Pat- cnt Office, and the Prosidcnt’s House. At the last named place, the L peeing having been invited into the Kast Room, they were intro- duced to the President by Mr. Jas. H. Brown, of the Columbia firecompany The President : received them with his usual courtesy, and 7 made a few remarks appropriate to the occa- sion, and which habeas | lighted the visit- ers. These ceremonies being completed, the firemen repaired to the American hotel. where dinner was provided by direction of their Washington brethren. The visitors were in the midst of us about five hours; a period of time ssoemingty short, in view of the fact that many things of ifter- est are to be seen in this metropolis; and be- sides, Mount Vernon is an attraction which no strangers should resist. Our Washington firemen, doubtless, parted with those of Rochester with regret. The meeting was in all respects fraternal; and the events of the day were such as may ever be cherished in memory. Scexe at tae Rartroap Starion.—About four o’elock the Rochester firemen, under o:- cort, approached—one of our city bands per- forming several lively airs, among them the classical tune of “ Pop goes the wexsel’’"—and entering the station-house made that building resound to the instrumental melody, and awoke the slumbering echoes in that locality. The Rochesterians, accompanied by their Washington firemen friends, passed the gate without hindrance; but not so with the im- mense crowd, for the greater part boys, which had been pressing at their heels and on the flanks of the procession. Thus shut out, ingc- nuity did not long hesitate to find another means of ingress, so the throng hurried to the rear of the car-house, and slipped in by turn- ing the narrow and sharp eorner—the space between the extreme pillar of the structure and acar scarcely affording a free passage to the rapidly moving human forms. Soon the planked way, on a line with the range of cars, was densely crowded both with the firemen and the intensely interested spectators. The visitors and their Washington friends had just enjoyed a few hours of social inter- course and fraternal greetings; and now the time had arrived for them to separate. At this juncture, every movement was watched with more than ordinary aolicitudo. All was confusion, loud ta!king, and shaking of hands, and ever and anon hearty peals of laughter would cause the spectators to press forward to uscertain the immediate origin cf the remark which occasioned such risible explosions. One of the Rochesterians, on a car platform, os- ~sayed to deliver a short address, the purport ef which was an expression of thanks for the cordial reception with which they had been honored, and an utterance of the hope that peace, prosperity, and plenty might ever crown the lives of those with whom they were en the eve of separation. Occasionally, huzzas were given, three times three, improved by the addition of “2 tiger.’ If such cheers impart social advantages, we err not in remarking that all who engaged in them were materially benefited, for they were, to quote an oft-repeated expression, & “given with a will ;’’ the heart prompting tie lips to their utterance, in doubtless profound sincerity. While the respective firemen were thus employed, the locomotive, emitting dense black ead of smoke, and rattling its iron boner, shufiled to the vicinity of the cowpli- mentary exercises, on its way to the car first to be hitched toits rear. In passing, the iron monster, pausing. fur a moment, gave the crowd a specimen of its louder musica! pow- er:, by deafening sereezhings and hoarse and heavy hackings of its lungs ;’’ drowning, so to speak, the human voices, which, combined, were as loud, we should judge, as the voice of that celebrated gentleman of other days, well known in the heathen myt’ »logy as Steator. The Rochesterians were warned to take their seats, in order that they might not be left be- hind; with which request they were not slow tocomply. And then it was that they looked from the windows, and extended their hands once more, (for the twentieth time, perhaps,) to bid *‘ good bye, old fel,’’ to the Washington firemen who crowded up to the cars. We never before witnessed a more inno- cently excitirg scene. Every body appeared tobe happy. (By the time the cars jeft, our firemen hud huzzaed themzelve: hoarse, it may here be remarked, by way of parenthe- sis.) A little affair took place, which added some spice to the exciting Ma A middle-aged man, not a fireman, and who, it was in to be seen, had been moistening his clay with something stronger than Adam's ale. addition- ally stimulated by the music from the city band in attendanee, gave an exhibition of his dancing powers, going through all the steps and figures, and bowing to his imaginary fe- male partner, with as mach grace as his gal- lantry, under the alcoholic circumstances, rmitted. The reel was executed admirably, fis legs being peculiarly in a condition for that pui . While he thus made a “‘ Judy” of himself, he amused the more refined por- tion of the spectators by his e-/eg-ant gyra- tions. But again the steam-pipe gave a screech, loud and understandable, as much as to say, *- All hands aboaid!”’ and, in a mom nt after- ward, the train was on its way, northward bound: the Rochesterians looked out at the windows, bidding adieu, their rapid retreat followed by the now faint huzzas of the WasL- ington firemen. e repeat, they all had a merry, pleasant time; nothing occuring to mar the joyous and caternal demonstrations. Pustic Scuoors.—The moathly meeting of the Trustees was held at the stated time. Present: Dr. Charles W. Davis, Messrs. Ben- nett, Dickinson, Smoot, Bacon, Magruder, Potk, McKim, Pearson, and Knight. The annual report was read and approved, and ordered to be transmitted to the Councils. The Treasurer was directed also to submit to the Councils the estimates for the contingent expenses of the several districts for the cur- rent year. Messrs. Magruder, Pearson, and Dickinsen, were appointed to audit the Treasurer’s ac- counts, On motion of Dr. C. W. Davis, an arrange- ment entered into between the parties for the promotion of the interests of the respective schools, by which Mrs. Martin was transferred to the male primary of the third district, and » ~ Miss Mirick to the female department of the district school, was unanimously approved. Miss Catharine A. Bradley and Mrs. Augus- tus Edson, were unanimously appointed teach “ers, respectively, of primary No. 6, third dis trict, and male primary of the fourth district. Rodgers was closed, and the case was submitted for the decision of the court as to whether testimony be taken or not. It is claimed that the petitioner and Chero- koes, residing in States east/of the Mississippi, sons, according to the nm by the Indian Department in 1851, are entitled by the treaty of 1835, and supplement thereto, to their proportionate per capita of $704,947 16 over and above the sum of $914,026 13, found due as per state- ment of the accounting officers of the treasury and the settlement made by Congress in 1851, in pursuance of the pri the treaty of August, 1! based principally on the 12th and 15th arti- cles of the treaty of 1835, and amounts in the aggregate to $92,625 19. In response to a toast complimentary to the visiting company—Rochester, No. 6—a neat and appropriate speech was delivered by Mr. Donnell, one of its members, in which he returned the thanks of his brethren from Rochester for the handsome manner in which the Washingtonians had treated them.
