The Alexandria, Loudon and Hampshire Railrpad Company assembled yesterday at Sare Hall. BR. Jamieson, Esq., occupied the chair, and Reuben Johnston, ai acted as secretary. The annual reports of the Pres- ident and Chief Engineer were read and re- ferred. Upon proceeding to an election of offi- cers for the ensuing year. Lewis McKenzic, of Alexandria, was re-elected President. Jas. Mellhany, of Loudon, and C. P. Lee, of Alex- andria, directors on the part of the stosk- holders. A Wasaixetoxian Rossep.—The Cine‘n- nati Columbian says that on Friday cvening last, Mr. Charles W. Havener, of this city. who was stopping at the Barnet House, took a walk down by the White Water Canal, but. being a stranger there, lost his way. Meeting a a he inquired of him the direction ' to the Burnet House ; and was shown a cor- trary direction from that in which he was q going, and accompanied by the younz man who had given the information. They had not proceeded far before they were met by another person, who, going behind Mr. Havener, caught him by the throat, holding him firmly, while the other rifled his pockets of their cvi- tents, consisting of a gold watch ani a pocket- book containing about $18 in money. Mr. Havener’s throat was inclosed so tightly that he was unable to utter a word, or ery for help Luckily he had left his belt, containing the bulk of his money, at his hotel. After the Villains had obtained their booty, they left him to find his way home the best way he could, with the consciousness of returning minus his money and his wateh. Pasters.—Such of our citizens who have, of late, chanced to be in Messrs. Taylor and aury’s bookstore, have undoubtedly observed there a small collection of exquisite pastel pic- tures, representing the four seasons, Hager, and other subjects. For originality of style | and handling, these pictures are deserving especial comment, as they give, in a higher degree than is usual, the bold effects of vil Fynting allied to the softer color of the crayon. ey give indication of a talent which, if duly developed, must eventually place the artist at the head of the school. The lady who has ex- ecuted the pastels is Mrs. S. C. Hitchcock, a sister of the well-known American biblograph- ist and scholar, Henry Stevens. She at pree- ent resides sbroad, eceupied in artistic and literary studies ; and we are happy to observe from such results as have reached us that she has within a short time attained a most envia- ble position, both as a writer and as a painter. Bartowore & Onto Rattnoap.—We learn from the Baltimore Patriot that the annual report of the President and Directors of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad was presented to the stockholders at their general meeting held at Baltimore on Moday. The grors revenue for the fiscal year ending on the 30th of September, 1855, is set down at $3,711,153 the working expenses at $2,110,4 ; showing a nett revenue of $1,601,090 55. The increase in the gross receipts from the main stem upon the previous fiscal year is stated by the Treasurer to amount to $65.- S44 52; but, the ratio of expense for the ycar having been greater, there is a decrease in the net revenue, as compared with that of the preceding year, of $18,300 19. The clear gain of the whole year’s work on the main sten is stated at $790 244 05, all of which has been absorbed in the reduction of the debt due by the company, und by other necessary outlays. The gross revenue from the Washington Branch is put at $402,635 07; its expenses, $195,281 76; nett revenue, $207,353 31; being an increase in gross revenue upon the pre- ceding year of $23,409 46. It is farther shown that the estimated re- ba of the company from various suurces will not only be sufficient to pay off all de- mands falling due during the ensuing six mouths, including the floating debt, but will probably leave a balance in the Treasury of $54,379 57. The conclusions based upon the report are, that, on the Ist ef April, 1857, the company will be unembarragsed; its floating debt Hiqui- ts fanded debt of $5,323,500 under a | aire reduction; the loan from the city of 9.000.000 provided for by a sinking fund, which will nearly pay it on maturity, and the A Deuicarrut Evextxg —The cotillon par- ty of the Franklin Target Company, last even- ing. at Harmony Hall, though not avery large , party, was, decidedly, the ball of the season, se far asthe pleasure derived by all is con- cerned.
