EVENING STAR. LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Proresson Pepro Antoxto Dacnas, was buried in Georgetown on Wednesday. He was thirty-eight years of age; a native of Spain. and for a few years past jist to the Catholic Chureh of the Holy Trinity, and also teacher of music in Georgetown College. The Rev. Mr. Maguire, the president of that insti- tution. pronounced the discourse at the fane- ral of Professor Daunas, deseribing bis child- like simplicity of manners, his goodness of peart. and his generosity, which amounted almost to a fault ; and his thorough knowledge ef music, and his great love of flowers and the beauties of nature. The keys of the or- gan, which he bad so often touched with a master’s hand. were silent, and the prayers for the dead, and the chaunting by eight of the priests, were all in beautifal and touching keeping with tke solemn occasion. remains were deposited in ——_ grave, in the old Catholic burial ground. Peace to his ashes. Rupixg to THE Watcn Hovse —Last night, German, named Frederick Barman, an ap- propriate cognomen for one in bis condition, was discovered lying in the street, with a curb- stone for his pillow. Pedestrians hurried by, wrapped in their thickest winter apparel; the weather being raw, damp, and Windy; but there lay the victim of strong drink, uncom- lainingly. A police officer approached, bid- ing bim rise and proceed to the watch-house. This act, however, the German was unable to form; his limbs refused to execute that de- scription of locomotion. The officer procured a band-eart, or some such vehicle; with a vast expenditure of strength, be succeeded im seat- jug his passenger, and thus conveyed him to the guard-house After a comfortable night’s snooze, the refreshed lodger was arraigned this morning. and required to pay 8 fine and the costs, whereupon he was restored to liberty. Ferep Prorte vr Coror.—F, W. Scott, fsq.. executor of the last will and testament P Nise Nancy Taliaferro, of King William county, Va. left the city, yesterday. in the four-and-a-balf o'clock train of cars, bavi! under his care about twenty-fcur liberat slaves of that lady's estate. whom he {ntended taking to Mount Pleasant, Ohio, there io be lo- eatel in the neighborhood of a Society of Friends. He representa that they are intelligent and respectable; that each of them, in addition to their freedom, received one hundred and twenty-five dollars, and that he had, previous to leaving King William oy, made pro- vision fur them in their new homes in the West. Several of the blacks belonging to the estate are detained in Virginia by a law suit. Finst Geaxp Assexsty.—We learn that, at the request of a large number of friends, the Ben Franklin Target Company has deci- ded upon giving @ series of assemblies durin, the coming winter—the first of which will take place on Tuesday evening next at Har- nfony Hall, when, we are satisfied, all lovers of the exercise of the “‘ light fantastic toe”’ wil be gratified to their heart's content. Esputa’s band has been engaged toenliven the occasion, and we feel confident that the ‘‘ Tigers’ will meet with a fair remuneration for ther under- taking. Lost nis Way.—Last age & map, in a staggering condition, accosted a police officer : “ Sir-r-r, will—ye please to tell me where I am, and which is my best way home,” at the sume time pitching to first one side of the footway, and then t» the cther. Mr. A. R. Allen, with his usual accommodating spirit, put the inebriate on the right track; previ- ously learning that the citizen who had lost his way had just taken a drunken man home. sod then got drunk himself! Taz Coxcert. to-night, at the National Theatre, (Messrs. R J. Turner and 8.8. San- ford as vocalists, and Signor Amici as an in- strumental performer,) will, we have every reason to believe, be largely attended—the professional abilities of those gentlemen being of the highest order, and our citizens always ready to appreciate and patronize a musical entertainment of the character presented. Coxrgctionery —Mr.J G. Weaver, flocated opposite to Brown's Hotel, has his establish- ment fitted up in handsome style, supplied with all the variety of nice things which enter nto that branch of business. The best proof of his skill in the manufacture of luxuries is in the tasting of his confections, particularly his French cream, Boston cream, and Rachel oream cakes. Fret Lopesas.—The disagreeable weather of last night drove four poor, friendless human beings to the guard-hvuse for op a es eldest of them sixty-seven and the young- est seventeen yoars of age. Were it not for the accommodations there afforded, such crea- tures would endure a greater amount of phy- sical suffering than they are now forged to ex perience Beare’s Panorama or tae Arctic Re- gions —The exhibition of this beautiful and interesting picture will close this evening, at Udd Fellows’s Hall. They who have not yet seen it, should avail themselves of this last opportunity for that purpose. The Pancrama will be exhibited in Alexandria, Virginia. next week, commencing on Monday. * Haw —Yesterday afternoon, we hed a hail- *torm, but not to such an extentas make the particulars interesting. They who were not abroad to feel the effects of the hail-stones, may, however, have another opportunity to witness a similar exhibition before the autumn aad winter shall have departed! Cextre Marxet—Although there was a Hentifal supply of vegetables and other arti- eles which enter into gastronomic consumption, the prices of some of them were several shades higher this morning. as compared with the Prices of the previous sales-day Taz Eorron or rue Trurn requests us to say that he will deliver a lecture to-morrow evening, at Temperance Hall, on the subject of total abstinence, of which he claims to be “ the author,”’ and the sixteenth anniversary of which he designs to celebrate. Natioxa, Tagatre.—Workmen are now engaged painting the front of this edifice, giving it a suit of brown. We should be pleased to add, were it in our power, that the ulty condition of the street in that locality bad been improved Visttixe FPirexes re Company No. 6, of Rochester, New York, intend leaving that sity on or abvat the 20:h instant, on a visit to Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, ac- companied by a fine band of music. AprorntwgeNts.—The Uovernor of Virginia bas reappoiuted Captain Robert Taylor in- Spector of flour Mr. Joseph MeLean in- spegtor of fish, fur Alexandria. A Kixo Worp vor a Bear.—A correspon- dent writes to us es fullows: Mr. Editor - I was recently one of a party to the Insane Asylum in this city, under the supervision cf Dr. Nickell, and was highly Sratified with the appearance of the grounds, the structure cf the building, aud the moral ‘spect cf the ur f rtunate inmates, who evinced by their deportment as much a and untentment ag could be expected from a class of society whe, in the providence of God, are debarred from uceess to muy sources of en- *Ywent in which others participate. tiscurious to uotice the varied develop- Meuts of insavity. even among se small a num- ber as sixty; but tue acoommodations for twice that number are nearly ready. It is not unfrequently the case the brute Creation suffer by the neglect of man, and the bear. which they have enclosed in a cage of Very lupited dimensions, may be adduced aga Saee in point. Ne doubt it isa mere oversight in thuse who have the ordering of such mat- tere, but really the sympathies of our party Were enlisted fur that bear. If the animal Was taken from hie vage and fastened tosome tree by a chain. he would perambulate the grounds tw the extent of bis restrieted Liberty, 1 oovasionally escend the tree, in which case he would see that bis chain is clear, as they have the sagas to attend to these pre Lminertes. Mr. Enrtor : I write by the feeble rays of gas (it requires rather a stretch of the imagi- nation to call it) light, it is so vividly blue, and delightfully pale. Ifit werea little more so, it would reader darkness completely visi ble. Can you not fulminate some thunder, or something as hard, to reach the leaden sonl of the Gas Company, (if they have one?) Please stir them up—we have tried, but we have most signally failed. We had no gas for three nights, a short time ago, but we did not fail to pay for all the wind that passed through our meter. We asked to be excused, but it was no go, we had to chalk up. We were told that we should have no complaint in future; but if the appearance of the gas at the present time is not a sufficient cause of com- plaint, it is because it is too weak. I propose that we have a new Gas Company—one with @ soul in it, and one that will give us gas that will afford a better light than the present. I hope, therefore, that you will direct your ar- tillery towards the dark, benighted Gas Com- y, and pitch into them some of your red- 10t balls, so as to produce some kind of explo- sion that will illumine the First Ward with light. Yours, First Warp. Uetober loth. Warcn Retcr's.—Ann Keho and Sasan Mattingly, two characters well known to the police, were arrested as vagrants, but were this morning dismissed. One of them said, in the lan; of the song, ‘‘ No, I’ll not drink sny more ;’’ which promise, we trust, she will sacredly keep. (a ee GEORGETOWN CORRESPONDENOE. Georgetown, Oct. 13, 1855, Our City Councils met last night, pursuant toadjournment. Present, all the members of each Board. Mr. Osborn, from the committee on ways and means, reported adversely upon the rec- ommendation of the Mayor to issue certificates of corporation stock for the purpose of funding a portion of the floating debt. The report was unanimously sustained. Mr. Pickrell presented the remonetrance of V. Taylor, Esq-, against the construction of an aqueduct over Water street, by A. Ray; teferred to a joint committee A bill in favor of Dickson & Gordon, for $28 81, was passed by both Boards, and signed Mr. English, of the joint committee, re- ported a bill in favor of Alexander Ray. granting the said Ray and his ussigns the right to construct an aqueduct from the canal to the wharves, over Water street, forthe pur- les of unloading coal boats; which paased th Boards unanimously and was signed. _ Mr. Myers was appointed to fill the vacancy in the committee on ways and means, caused by the resignation of Mr. Edes. The Board of Aldermen passed a bill forthe improvement of Second alley. This ally rurs parallel with the canal, from Congress to High street, and the improvement of it will be de- cidedly a at public benefit. The great uantities of produce and merchandise which Imost constantly being unloaded and loaded at the canal wharves at this point, renders the improvement absolutely necessary. Indeed, we know of nostreet in which it is more needed than this. The counting rBom of the warehouse of Jo- seph N. Fearson, Esq., situated upon the canal, was entered last night by bur, , his iron safe unlocked, and robbed of some two hundred dollars, consisting of some $70 in ten cent pieces, in a small bag made of Marseilles, one £20 gold piece, one $20 note, Bank of Old Dominion, one $5 note Bank of Old Dominion, three $5 gold pieces, one $2t gold piece, one 37 note Corporation of Georgetown, and the remainder in fifty and twenty-five cent pieces, sud other kinds of small change. It is supposed thet both the house and safe was entered by means of false keys, as the safe was found this morning locked as usual. We aro requested to say that in the absonce of Mr. Brook, the pastor, the Rev. Mr. Speak or Magee, will preach in the Dumbarton street M.E Church to-morrow (Sungay) morning at 11 o’clock and the Rev.
