John C. Smith, Mr. WILLIAM F. PRUITT to Miss SARAH A. LEMON, all of this city. In Havana, on the 15th of September. JOHN BENJAMIN BELT, Esq., formerly of Washing- ton, to Senorita CARMEN MUNOZ, of Havana. DIED, On the 7th instant, WILLIAM WALLACE EUGENE, infant son cf William and Frances Dayesen. The funeral will take place from the residence of Mr. Aaron Dawson, on K s'reet, between Eley- enth and ‘f'welfth, on Tuesday afternoon at 3 ee ‘The friends of the family are iavited to attend. On the Sth instant, Mrs. ANN E. DINKLE, of Alexandria. Tus Art or Sixeine.—The following arti- cle from the National Intelligencer,is entitled to the favorable consideration of our readers ; and, in this connection we would respectfully refer our readers to the advertisement in this afternoon’s Star: ‘‘No provision is made for instruction in yo- cal music in the public schools in Washington, nor the private schools of which we have any knowledge. In some instagces, by the yolun- tary act of the teachers, the children are taught to sing a few songs, but not the elements of music; and this is true also of the Sabbath Schools. The love of music is universal am: the children of this city, and it is manifeste: in every possiblemanner. They all sing in their own imperfect manner. In every Sab bath Sohool they sing in full chorus © Upon every public occasion in which they are brought forward they sing. Every concert room accessible to them by means of a low price of admission, isfall of them. They are adepts in “Ethiopian Minstrelsy;” they sing with gusto the songs of the yellow-covered books jn every political campaign; yet they are not taught to sing correctly, and they fail to acquire in youth a branch of education that is then easy of acquisition, but is difficult to enter upon in later years. “We regret this great omission. Music of the proper kind greatly harmonizes and ele- vates the character of both children and adults, but in the former its influence is strikingly puerto The standard of music can only ecome elevated in this city by an apprecia- tion of the subject by the community in gen- eral; in other words, by the general dissemi- nation of musical education, and es cially in the department of vocal music. There are a number of professors of music among us who are capable of imparting the needed instruc- tion in an efficient manner. May we not hope more. The plate, too, does infinite credit to t] skill of our country in the production of such things. It was all made to order in Dorches- ter, Massachusetts, and fully equals any plated work ever imported into the United States in the fineness and delicacy of its multifareous designs, and the exquisite skill with which they have been exesuted. The glassware eame from Brooklyn, New York, and is cut after beautiful and unique patterns, all of which ere entirely new, the main features of the embellishments being emblematic of Amer- ican nationality. The ladies — for- merly a dingy, dreary concern, has been trans- formed into a chamber in which Victoria or Eugenia might not be ashamed to entertain their guests, no pains or expense having been spared to make it the most tasteful and ele- ant dining-room in the United States in all fs appointments, from the gorgeous curtains shadirg its windows, to the its wine cloths, its seats, and its cutlery. The glassware and the chandeliers through- out the house—and a very large number have been introduced—were furnished by Hau- wought £Co, of New York. The latter arecf bronze and bright-work combined. We cannot deszribe them here, but have to say that those in the main dining room (which were wu: when we were there) have never been equall: in any other similar work imported or executed in this country. The genius of a finished ar- tist could alone have conceived them, while no one but an artizan, unsurpassed in any country, could have so faithfully copied, in their every line and curve, the spirit of exqui- site art so manifest in the minutest details of their design. The carpenter-work is by Mr. Entwisle, of Washington; the painting by Jesse Vickers, of WANTS. P But we have room, to-day, in which to say little more of the magical improvements which Mr. Gay has made in the National. We found three French cooks in tieir characteristic uni- form of pure white, including the square skull cap, the famous Virginia colored cook of the elder Guy’s Baltimore establishment—the man who got up the fried chickens, game suppers, broiled oysters, &e., which have made the hoase of the senior known to everybody in the United States who has a soul for good eating— a famous confectioner from New York, and an army of souilions, of both sexes, getting ready for the formal opening of the establishment, this afternoon. If the world, at this moment, contains a better appointed hotel of its size, than the National in this city, it is not in the United States; and not having read of it, we doubt its existence in Europe. =) ne ag airereineeniiemalinnenieeeenekca aces ANTED—A SITUATION FOR A COL ored Boy; a slave about 18 years oid. The proposition was accepted, and their wishes, in this respect, gratified. It is not often that we hear of such liberality and benevolence, and therefore the incident is worthy of publicity. Ma. Joux Mitier, whose reputation as a confectioner is so well known in this city as to require no especial notice of commendation, advertises that he has re-opened his establish- iment to-day; it having been closed for several weeks past, in order that his rooms might be refitted and the house renovated, in prepara- tion for the autumn and winter campaign. The bracelet—an emblem of eternity—is most beautifully braided, and adorned with richly carved gold mountings, containiug he hair of two deceased sisters. The handsomely-braided necklace was made of the hair of a mother, and the at- tached Maltese cross was of the hair of a child. The beautiful breastpin, representing & double bow with shield and pendant, is engraved ‘‘ Father;’’ and the ear-rings, made of a gentleman’s hair, represent two delicate- -braided baskets held in the bill of a dove. ‘t affords us pleasure to learn that such work is done in our city, and recommend our read- ersand the public to John H.
