Tas Wasutscrox Carre? Store.—The com- pleteness of the establishment of Messrs. Clag- ytt & Dodson is justly a matter of pride wit all who desire hington to become really a city in its business affairs. We question «hether New York city embraces a sin- ,® carpet store wherein a greater variety of finer samples of goods in the way of carpeting eil cloths and other ———- for the fo rare to be found. Of course, in wholesale carpet houses in that city, larger stocks are necessarily kept. But in the matter of an as- tortment at ail conceivable prices, and of all qualities, and to suit all conceivable tastes of housekeepers, the house of Clagett & Dodson we presume has hardly a rival in the country. Those fond of noting the progress of the indus- trial, and, indeed, the fine arts, cannot find a richer treat in this city than by spending half aa hour in viewing some of their magnificent Specimens of carpet weaving, —- and —- many of which, in the brilliancy and elicacy of their lights and shades are posi- tively artistic a of a very high order. Year after year, for the last ten years, this House has been searching not only our Northern cities, but England and France, for recherche and saleable improvements in the way of car- pets and rugs, until so complete is their sys- tem that a new style in their line, if worth anything, is as certain to be found on their shelves as in the most fashionable carpet store in Paris and London. It is well known to our fellow-citizens that their sales are enormous, which means neither more nor less than that they draw an immense business to their house by extreme moderation of charges, and by taking care always to have on hand goods in their line to suit the means of those whe desire but a meagre domestic carpet or oil cloth, a2 well as goods such as an Eastern sultan might sit on during an occasion of ceremony. Paropt.—From —— indications, there will be a large attendance at Carusi’s Saloon to-night, on the occasion of Parodi’s concert. Many cexts have already been secured, and much eee evinced to hear the celebrated songstress. The programme is rich and va- ried. It will be a musical entertainment of the highest order of talent. M. Strakosch, as a performer on the piano forte, and Madame Strakosch as a vocalist, are well and favorably known to our community, they having pre- viously assisted at Parodi’s concerts in this city. Leonardi, we believe, has not hereto- fore sung in Washington, but the accounts which have reached us speak in commenda- tion of his artistic merits. Altogether, the bill is attractive. Tut Lopcers.—The nights are now becon§ ing rather cool for the unfortunate poor tu make their beds upon the fields or in old barns, stables, or the market places. The Captain of the Auxiliary Guard is beginning to supply the unfortunate ones with the shel ter of the guard-house. Sober men who apply for lodgings at the Central Station are always accommodated and dismissed in the morning ; but the vagrant, inebriate or disorderly person who applies for lodging and is identified, is certain to pay for his lodging by serving a term at labor on the Corporation farm. - cently the police have had but little todo at the guard-house. The city has been remark- ably free of candidates for the farm ; vagrants are scarce, and other offenders appear to have changed their mede of living. The mofority of those who are brought in for trial at pre- sent, are only} visitors in Washington, and we are glad to be able to state that very few of our own citizens suffer for violating the laws. Tae Pressytery or tHe District or Co- Luxsta is to hold its next meeting on Wednes- day and Thursday, October 34 and 4th, in the Western Presbyterian Church, H street, near 19th street pe Pennsylvania avenue There will be preaching every _— during the week, unless the business of the Presbytery prevents. On Monday and Tuesday nights, the Rev. E. J. Newlin, of Alexandria, will supply the pul- pit, and on Wednesday night, the Moderator ——_ the opening sermon before the Pres- ry. On Thursday night, Rev. W. T. Eva, f Rockville, and on Friday and Saturday nights, Rev. Dr. Sunderland, of the First Church, will preach. Services to commence at 74 o'clock. Wnuo Wants 4 Hovsexerrer ?—Tho gen- tleman in whose family the advertiser for a housekeeper’s situation appearing in to-day’s Star, has lived for some years past (in Alex- andris,) writesus that any family or person desiring a thorough!y competent and reliable housekeeper who wiil under any and all cir- cumstances make herself an acceptable inmate of a mansion, cannot do better than to seck her out. Aswe know that no one can be a better judge in such matters than the gentle- man in question, who is as particular in what he says as in the conduct of his affairs of all sorts, we do not hesitate to call attention to the advertisement to which wo refer above. Tar Cavaury Har.—E. Owen & Son, army and navy merchant -tailors of this city, oa exhibition, we perce the new regulation hat for officers of the cavalry regiments in the Uaited States service. Itis a novel and beau tiful thing, jaunty, and at the same time grace- ful. Its style is much that of the cavaliers hat of the era of Charles II., the flops being Somewhat less ample, however. It should be seen by all who are interested in military ha- diliments. Tas Narioxar Taearre will be opened for the season on Wednesday evening, under the management of Hanry ©. Jarrett. The ad- Yertisement in another column gives the par ticulars, from which it will be seen that the attractions are such as to insure success. Tur Mixwesora, E will be launched, at the Washington Navy Yard, during the present season. We venture the assertion that this frigate, both as respects her hull and machi- pons will be at leas: equal to any one of the maining six steam frigates authori built by Congeane eee Caritas Doxz.—We notice that workmen are now employed stripping the dome of its copper covering, preliminary to the removal of that part of the bui ing. The panels of the rotunda are protected from the dust incident to those operations, b: shedding erected near them and close curtains in front. The newspapers are filled with accounts of the fall of Sebastopol, or, in other words, of the blowing up of one part of it by the Rus- sians, and their retreat to the other, and the attendant fighting and slaughter, A few particulars in addition to those which we published yesterday, wiil doubtless prove interesting to our readers : The Paris Debats contains an editorial arti- cle. discussing the question whether Sebasto- pol is tenable by the Allies while the Russians are masters of the forts on the north side, fronting the sea. and asserts that the town is quite tenable, the possession of Fort Chorsone and Balaklava superseding the necessity of entering the harbor. The Russian armies will probably continue in observation within their strong positions until the Allies make some movement—hence all speculation as to the plan of the campaign must be purely imagi- pary. We have already given the English and Russian accounts of the action before Sebasto- pol; the following are those of the French and Sardinian, which are more spirited : PELISSIER AND BRUAT’S DISPATCH Panis, Sept 10—3 p. m. A supplement of the Moniteur has just ap- peared. It publishes the following : The Minister of War received to-day (Sept. 10) at 3 p. m., the following telegraphic dis- patch from General Pelissier: Brascion Repovst, Sept. 9—3 a m.—Kara- belnaia and the south part of Sebastopol no longer exist. The sire Pp ae our solid occupation of the Malakoff, decided upon evacuating the place, after having destroyed and blown up by mines nearly all the defences. Having passed the night in the midst of my troops, I ean assure you that rey ing inthe Karabelnaia is blown up, and from what I could see the same must be the case in front of our left line of attack. This immense success does the greatest honor to our arms. I will send you a detailed account of our losses during the day, which, after so many obstinate combats, must be considerable. To-morrow I shall be able’ to form an esti- mate of the result of this great day’s work, a great portion of the honors of which are due to General Bosquet and McMahon. Everything is quiet on the Tech and we ace vigteat there. eee Paris, Sept. 94. p. m. ; toe following was posted up at the Bourse jo-day < The Minister of War received at 10 o’clock this morning the following news : Caimea, <i 9—8 p. m.—This morning, I ascertained that the enemy has sunk his steamers. Their work of destruction continued under the fire of our shells. _The explosion of mines successively and on different points makes it our duty to defer our entrance into the place, which presents the spectacie of an immense conflagration. Closely pressed by our fire, Prince Gortecha- koff has demanded an armistice to carry away =~ caging of the wounded near Fork Bt. aul. The bridge, as a precautionary measure, hes been broken down je his orders. I am collecting the returns of our losses, and you shall have them as soon as ready. All goes on well.
