The programme has been judiciously selected, affording a fine o portunity to the distinguished pee ae to dis. play their finé vocal ers. Parodi, among other gems, will sing, ‘Ah! mon fils,’ the romanza from Meyerbeer’s grand opera of the Prophet, and “ Casta Diva,,’’ from the opera of *‘Norma.’’ M’me. Strakosch, Sig. nardi, and M. Strakosch, in appropriate parts, will in a high degree contribute to the chaste musical entertainment. 4 aes —_i S8gs § bg } rte Preparixe vor Fast Day!—A stout, firm, honest regen, Mem man, went into a restau- rant late on Tuesday afternoon, and ate one dozen fried and one dozen raw oysters, besides two bowls of oyster soup, with accompaniments and trimmings, and drank a giass of brandy and water, and then went home to supper. That the articles were all of good quality may be inferred from the fact that this gentleman's bealth has not suffered in the least from his performance. Beatz’s PasoraMa or tae Arctic Re- Gions, exhibiting at Odd-Fellows’ Hall, is every night witnessed by hundreds of delight- ed — who cannot fail to be interested by the beautiful scenes depicted, apart from the thrilling Tacidents of the expedition in the frigid zone. Coxressep Jup¢Ment.—John Holbrook and J. T. Mitchell, two young men who were ac- eused of behaving in a disorderly manner at the railroad depot, appeared before Justice Bates yesterday and confessed guilty. They were ordered to pay a fine and costs under the corporation law. Sweet Porarors.—A friend informs us that sweet potatoes of excellent quality have been selling in the Northern Liberties market for 124 cents per peck for some days past. He complains that he has to pay double that amount io the other markets. Reuer.—H. @. Murray has left with us $10, Mara, owe day’s net proceeds of his bar, Omnibus Hotel, Navy Yard, toward the relief of the sufferers of Norfolk and Portsmouth. We shall place it in the proper channel for transmission. Tae Diary Water Nvisance.—Mr. Editor: As you now and then deign to listen to the complaints of those who conceive themselves —— public a service by relating their selfish sorrows, do give me a place in your lo- eal columns that I may speak of a ‘‘ nuigance”’ of magnitude. I am one, sir, of that much- abused class, yelept a dandy, and you have perhaps seen me threading the avenue with my long coat and fashionable gait, and have no doubt admired the splendid cut of my pan- taloons, which, to tell you a secret, were made in Paris. Well, sir, I was walking out a few h. urs since, when some one deliberately threw & yuantity of dirty water out of a window, the w :ole contents bespattering me from head to fo t. You can imagine my indignation, blended wth ano small degree of mortification, as [ observed that no one pitied me, and every one seemed highly amused by the occurrence. To complete my disgrace two fashionable fe- males of my acquaintance hove in sight. I rushed to the door, and rung furiously; a pert huzzy of a housemaid made her appear- ance. ‘Miserable woman,’’ I exclaimed, “who threw that filthy water on me!’’ The only answer I got was a rude laugh, and burst- ing into the hall I ran up stairs, determinin; etaed vengeance on somebody. Everyone met denied all knowledge of the occurrence: and finding the entire household congregated by this time in the entry, and that they were criticizing my appearance, I beat a hasty re- treat, resolving to revenge myself on them some other time. On arriving at my lodgings Timmediately sat down and commenced the penning of this, asta bee will sympathize with me, and execrate the authors of my ca- lamity. Tou YeLtowsip. Guorerrows, Sept. 28, 1855 Mr. Mayfield, of the firm of Mayfield & Brown, deposited yesterday, in the Bank of Commerce, $100, the amount of the collection at the Bridge street Presbyterian Church on last Sabbath, and $15 contributed by the ope- ratives in the Pioneer cotton factory, for the benefit of the Norfolk and Portsmouth sufferers. Forestaliing the market, or counting the chickens before they are hatched, seems to be the unfortunate practice into which some news- paper correspondents or their informants, from our city, are in the frequent habit of fallin into of late. For instance: We find in one the morning papers an item stating that ‘the Mayor addressed a number of m es, in re- lation to a multitude of subjects, to a called meeting of our Cjty Councils, Igst night.’’ There was no meeting of the Councils, last night. A call was ¢ by the Mayor for the Councils to assemble, it is true; butin neither Board was there anything like a quorum pres- ent—consequently no messages could be read; and we presume nearly all, if not all, the members of each Board are as ignorant of the odjects for which the meeting was called cs ourself and our citizens, and how persons out- side of our city should know we cannot com prehend. We would advise the correspondent alluded to hereafter to ‘‘come and see” and know for himself that such and such proceed- ings did mag yee & transpire in our Oity Coun. cils before he on publicity to them. ‘‘There is many a slip between the cup and the lip,”’ is an old adage that he would do well to bear in mind hereafter, when he receives communi- catiens similar to the one in relation to the menting of our Councils and the proceedings thereof. The flour market is firm at $8; supply un- asually light. We heard one merchant say this eaear that there was not a barrel in the hands of receivers. The supply of wheat coming in, chiefly by wagons, js qual to the demand The warket this morning is rather heavy, and shows ig ages of a drooping tgn- dency ; $1.75a31.80 good rd, and $1.80a $1.89 for white, appears to be the ruling price this morning.
