Tae Great Panonawa —The panorama of the Polar Seas and Sebastopol, which i open at Odd Fellows’ Hallon Monday next, is said to be a great and hiy esting work of the kind. It thaps by more person bition in this country, atthe North elicited unbounded the press. As our fellow-citizeas ha exhibited a very eummeadable taste works of useful and at the same tire agree- able instruction, we docbt not the hall will be thronged nightly while it remains in Wash- ington Pausrcn Accipent.—Yesterday, Messrs. J. - and Elgin Birth were gunning on the farm beionging to Capt. Jas. H. Birch, near Ball's cross-roads, in Virgivia, aud Mr. E. Birch b: started a bird, raised his gun to shoot it, and while in the act of dcing so, the £42 Wes discharged accidentally, and the en- tire load of shot lodged in Mr. J. W. Birca’s Jog, tearing it badly from the knee down. All the a: ance at hacd was imme oly S3- cured, ani Mr. Bireh placed in a position to _— be taken to this city, where he arrived at three o'clock. -Atoxenent Day.—The Israelites of this city will perform the services of the atonement on Saturday next in their synazogue on Tenth Street, between E and F. With them the day begins on Friday after sunset and closes on Saturday at night They spend the day in solemn fast neither eating nor drinking 2 Thess rules are ob- the same time by the Israelites throughout the world. Taz Mercuants and others living on the line of Penusylvania avenue, south si iD the neighborhood of Ceutre Market, do not object to the country people occupying the footwalks, but they do require tnat the city commissioners have the pavements cleared of the fruit, rubbish, and other nuisances, after market hours. The commissioner of the See- ond Ward, we learn, attends to this duty. We wish we could say the same of the conimis- sion of the Third Ward. Reuiciovs Meetixes.—For some time past the members of the Ninth street (Methodist Protestant) church have been holding a series of interesting wectiogs in their church, which have been attended by some of the ablest ministers of that persuasion. among whom we notice Rev. David Wilson, of Philade!phia, and Rev. Mr. Clayton. ‘These meetings are accomplishing much good, and will, we pre- sume, be continued for some time. Day or Paayer rs ALEXAxpEiA.—The Mayor of Alexandria has issued his proclama- tion, recommending that Friday next, the 2ist instant, be solemnly set apart by the citizens of that place, a2 a day of thanksgiving to Al- mighty God for his past mercies, aud of pray- er that he will relieve the distresses the neighboring cities afflicted with disease, and J. Spare ws from a like cala: ALEXaNDutA has so far contributed upwards of two thousand dollars for tho relief of the sufferers by yellow fever in Norfolk and Ports- mouth, and donations are daily being made, which will swell that amount considerably. Coxtamvren.—Two little misses, Alico E. Stewart aud hercister Fannie G. Siewart, sent us 25cents each, this morniag, fur the Norfolk éad Portsmouth sufferers fund, of Saturday thus speaks of the ‘River of Swans”’—our own Potomac : _< How few, even of our own citizens, who live on the banks of this noble river, fully aj psp its beauties, or have taken the trou- le to examine its shores, and look at its ever varying and enchanting scenery. It is one of the noblest shects of water in the world, and there are but few streams which can at all equal it, in our country at least. Travelers from abroad, upon first sailing up from the bay, have never failed to express their delight and admiration at all they see as they pursue their voyage—and some, we know, have spent days and nights upon the decks of the vessels on which they were passengers, gazing with gratified eyes upen the spl views which every instant broke upon them. “The broad expanse of water, the stately meanderings of. the river, the alternated ra of wooded and cultivated shores, the reaches, land-locked as they appear—looking like vast lakes—the bays and creeks, and the banks dotted with the handsome residences of the proprietors of the adjacent lands, all, from Alexandria down to the mouth of the river, combine to make a picture, or rather ® series of pictures, which the artist might well strive to copy, if he loves the beautiful in na- ture, and which would make a collection of views most exquisite and unrivalled. Let not the landscape painters think they can find on the Hudson river alone subjects worthy of their pencils, when they desire to portray river scenery. Our own Potomac will furnish them with themes worthy of their highest efforts. ‘* We could mention » hundred views which tho artist would love to linger on, and which we wish could be copied, and made familiar to the public. Nor are the shores of the Po- tomae without their legends, and s‘ories, and recollections—many of which we have listened to, from the old citizens. as the steam2r paged close to the projecting points, or shot out into the broad bays, made by the mouths of the creeks, large enough themselves to be called rivers. Could we induce the tourist, and the artist, and the scholar, to make occasional ex eursions on the Potomac, they would soon fill their portfolios with sketches, and their note books with materials for many an interesting tale.”” Iscoxventexces or Lapies Waking Our. Mr. Editor—Three communications have late- ly appeared in your paper in regard to the in- convenience the ladies experience nowadays in walking out. The muddy state of the streets has compelled us to raise our dresses to keep them from being soiled. The invidious and ungentlemanly remarks of the writer of one of the communications calls for some re- ply. He says that we lift our dresses where the way is clean. This is a spitefal remark and justlike an old bachelor. The stree‘s have lately been in such a bad state as to cause us to lift our dresses nearly all the time we have been out. It is somewhat better now. Perhaps this old bachelor is a Know Nothing, and wants to blind the public to the truth of the matter, by imputing to the ladies immodesty. We wish he would learn to tell the truth infuture. We don't bolieve this old bachelor knows a pretty foot when he sees it. Married men are more considerate, and ap- preciate ourconduct. By saving our dresses, we save them many a penny, as for the young men looking at us, we excuse them. They will get more sense as they got older. - Respectfully, AMELIA. — Trre Benzvoitence —Sarepta Hall, Alex- andria, on Monday morning presented an un usual appearance. Quantities of dry goods, of every description, (the donations of the merchants,) and clothes of all kinds, lay in heaps around the room, and the ladies were busily engaged in cutting out and fashioning garments to be made up for the destitute of our sister cities, that have been so sadly ai- jlieted. It was a beautiful sight to look upon; tie venerable matron, the young mother, and the gay and sprightly girl, all striving to do their utmost in the noble work. These arti- cles, #8 soon as completed, will be forwarded to the Howard Association at Norfolk for dis- tribution.—Gazett-. Wasntxetox’s Maxvat Lanor Scnoor.— Mr. Editor : Many years ago there was rai prnvery through the exertions of the late . W. Galliardett, some $10,000 or more. toward the establishment here of a boys’ “manual labor school,’ under the above eap- tion—an institution which Mr. G. had much at heart; but hedied before anything further one, leaving the money, perhaps, in the hands of the directors. The object of this note is to inquire, through the Star, of the geatlemen who had the muat- ter in charge, what has become of the scheme, aad, if abaudoned, what of the funds rais for the object? HH. Warca Returxs.—O. Miles, (colored,) pro- fanity, workhouse thirty days; R. Summer- ville, out after hours, fine and costs. Several unfortunate individuals were furnished with lodgings and dismissed this morning. 697.7 ____ HorticutturaL Exurpition.—The regular fall exhibition of the Horticultural Society of Maryland was opened on Tuesday evening in the hall of the Mary!and Iustitute. The spa- cious room hus been handsomely fiited up for the occasion, and the display of floral pro- ducts, ranged in @ tasteful manner throughout its entire length, forms a most pleasing sight, while the display of fruits and vegetables is highly creditable to the exhibitors, and shows to what perfection they may be brought by proper culture. This exhibition is far more interesting than any heretofore held by the suciety, both from the extent of the articles on exhibition and their great rarity and variety. During the evening the hall was visited by large numbers of ladies and gentiemen, who gave frequcat utterance, especially the former, to the high satisfaction the exhibition im- parted to them. A fino band of music isin attendance, aud by their enlivening sirs im- art increased interest to the scene. The ex- ibition will be continued until Friday next. Baltimore American. Asotuer Prize Ficut.—A prise fight took place on Monday morning at Point Albino, Canada, between two New Yorkers, named Flynn and Davis. After twenty-four rounds, cecupying twenty-nine minutes, both umpires charged Wives with foul play. Tho stakes amount to 3600, and tho result is yet unde cided. The combatants are trying to arrange another fight for $100. le Dr Hoofland’s Celebrated German Biers —The condition of the stomach 1s of vita! importance.
