Returning Visitors—A Drep of Philosophy (— Latest Styles—Rachel a Corks- nean—Fall Campaign—Our Model Mayor —Quackery—A laterary Dodge—Free Love —Progressive Union—Betting on the Fall Sebustopol, &e. There isa briskness now about New York which gives indications of an exciting fall, whether in business, polities, or pleasure. Places of amusement and churches are throw ing open the doors, and the thousands who played truant during the summer are begin- ning to show their sun-browned faces in our streets. My philosophic pen refuses to pass on without noting the simultaneousness of the theatrical and evangelical seasons. When the weather is too hot for amusemsnt, the church- es are closed. We are ail in a great whirl of excitement about the great tragedienne, Rachel. Not- withstanding all her faults as a woman, and all the tricks resorted to by her munazer— such as publishing a most exaggerated lite of her, as well as giving the utmcst notoriety to a few paltry acts of charity, if charity it can be called, which she has performed since her arrival ; notwithstanding these, it cannot be denied that she is truiy great in her profes- sion, Upon the first night of her performance nearly ali the celebrated actors ia this coun- try were present, and these who are supposed to be tue best judges of the art were the most enthusiastic in their applause. The houses have not been yet overcruwded, in fact searce- ly full; but the great prices may make the thing pay. The prices range from $1 to $3. Rachei hats are beginning to make their ap- pearance; Rachel coats are sree intro- Raced ; our restaurants advertise Rachel pud- ding; saloons announce Rachel cocktail; and an enthusiastic Hibernian informs the public that Le is prepared to furnish them with supe- rior Racha sirup prepared from a recipe given to his father by tuat illustrious lady herseli when she resided in Cork, where she was born. Of course his sirup sells. The parties and factions in the political field are beginning to marshal their torces in ear- nest for the approaching election. The latest appeerance ia the literary world is a book entitied ‘‘ Tue Escaped Nun, or Cou- vent Life and the Confessions of a Sister of Charity.” The book appears to be quite readable, but more especially mentionable en account of the stratagems resorted to inorder to get it advertised. An innocent tittle quarrel was gotten up bstween Miss Burckiey, the escaped nun, and the publish- ers, De Witt & Davenport. It was stated by the lady that they haa taken uuwarrantable liberties with the text. This, of course, they denied. The press through the ecuntry cow- mented upon the quarre!—just what both au- tbor and publishers desired. “We are in the midst of a Revolution.” Anism hus sprang up, and is rapidly spreading among us, that tureatens to turm our existing social institutions upside down. It is the doctrine of “Free Love.” This entirely ig- ueres the present marriage system. Lis dis- ciples contend for an unrestramed indulgence of the passion of love. A paper was pub- lished here for more than a year that sdvo- cated this new idea. A few associations were tormed in New York and Brookiya where the theory was reduced to practice. And now tic ieaders of the movement have gone West in order to purchaze land and live as a separate community. Their head quarters for the pres- ent, is Cincinnati. It is said that they already number more than 30,000. The association is called the “ Progressive Union.”’ The ad- mission fee is twenty-five vents; and every member is required, after being initiated, should he desire to remain with the sect, to surrender to the Society all his worldly goods. It is fair to presame that those who have joined were not very wealthy. The information brought by the Atlantic that Sebastopol is not yet taken, causes great disappointment and considerable pecuniary loss to our English residents, as heavy bets are pending upon the capture of that fortress be- tween the arrival of one steamer and another The allies have met with some little suocess, however, and John Buti may win once by and by if he keops on betting long enough. One of the men said that he “ex- pected every moment to see the trees set-to and dance a jig.” Subsequent explorations of Australia have taught us that these walking leaves are in- sects. They live upon the trees. Their bo- dies are very thin and fiat, their ving, form- ing large leaf-like organs. When they are disturbed their legs are folded awa: which, had it occurred in one of Dickens’ novels, would have been thought an invention quite absurd.
