Every book on entomology is full of Whustrations of These. But the observant man aod woman neod*not go to books for ex- amples of the wonderful Fotelligence of in- Sects, and the’ curious adaptations of means to ends which they so often display. Every per- son who has a garden, a tree, oven a shrub or two, may study rupee learn some- thing of insect life and skill. We have proof of thisin a little twig which lies before usas we write these lines. It iso little ingect’s summer-house; his rosewood sumuner-house. Loman it resembles a knot, or wart, and is of the size of # large chestnut. It formed the extremity of a smail branch of a rosebush, and was arranged for the aeeommodation and support of a family of ten ora dozen insect children, each of which was furnished with a separate apartment, where it was supplied with the aap of the branch. This being accomplished, the surplus sep was suffered to pass through the heuse, tv urish two twigs, which grew out of the wart, acted as ttrains to carry off the superilu- cus liquid. On cutting open this excreseenve a number of ag - white maggots were found, each occupying bis separate apartment, 2!] which apartments ran longitudinally with the breneh from which they derived their sup- ort This little knot or wart was externally quite hard, as much so at least as the wood of the limb on which it grew, and formed the out- ward extremity of the limb, the twigs grow- ing out of it both turning backward, towards the truuk of the bush.—Boston Traveller. For water closets on board ships and steamboats, about hotels and other places, there is nothing so nice to cleanse and purify these places, as simple green eopperas, dis- eolved; and for sick rooms, it may se erat under the bed in anything which will hold water, and thus render a hospital or other laces of the sick, free from unpleasant smells. butzhers’ stalis, fish mar! slaughter- houses, sinks, and wherever there are putrid and offensive gases, dissolve copperas and sprinkle it about, and in a few days the bad smeli will pass away. If a cat, rat, or mouse dies about the house, it is sure to drive away the offensive emell. > A Tarkish enthusiast at Constantinople lately eut off two yards of the telegraphic wire, which he brought to his house in the hope of being the first to’ know the news. When taken up for the offence, he admitted the fact, and said that all he wanted to learn ‘was the fall of Sebastopol.
