EVENING STAR. " LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Rewer to tue Svererners.—Mr. Robert E. Doyle, the president of that veteran and sterl- corps the Franklin Fire Company, has obiiging! shed us with the following statement of the receipts and expenditures of the excursion recently given by them for the benefit of the Virginia sufferers by the yellow fever: Total amount of receipts, 3190; ex- penditures, $133 33—leaving a balance of 55 67, which was deposited by Mr. Doyle with Chubb brothers, and by them transmitted to the Howard Association of Norfolk. Chubb Brothers acknowledge the receipt of $995 37 from the workmen employed in the = yard, collected through the exertions of w.P-es. es: for the relief of the distressed. From “A ** the same house has received 315. We would here repeat, that as the two cities of Norfolk and Portsmouth are alike necessit- ous, persons or societies making contributions would do well to especially designate the di- rection which they ‘lesire the funds to take, and if designed for the distressed of both places it should be expressly stated in the let- ter transmitting the money. Cavour 1s tHe Act. —Last aight, as Messr: Mockabee, Staniey and Thomas, of the auxi iary guard, were passing about their beat in the northern section of the city, they entered an alley known as Hor. -hamp alley, located between L and M street, their attention was attracted to a man who was rather suspicivusly engaged. The guards watched him closely, and saw him in the act of firing a building lo- eated in the alley, the property of Mr. P. Mac- key As soon as they discovered what be had done, Mr. Thomas went to the spct and extin- guished the fire, while his associates, after a short race, succeeded in arresting the incen- diary. Oa the way to the guard house the prisoner dropped something. weich one of the guards picked up: it was a bottle containing spirits of turpentine. A ball of lampwick was found upon him, which, in addition to the testimony of the guards, was rather strong evidence of his nightly vocation. Upon ex- amination before Captain Birch, he gave his name a= John Tones; but upon being reeog- nized by several persons he admitied that his name was John Jones. He is about twenty- two years of nge, rather good looking, is mar- ried. and hails from Baltimore, but has been living in Washington for a year ortwo. He denied that he set fire to the house, though he did not deny his connection with the botile of turpentine and the ball of lampwick; he said be was net the only one. He was sent to jail by Capt. Lirch, in default of $2.000 bail. We are informed that other evidence was dis- covered this morning. There are said to be warrants out against him for stealing.
