EVENING STAR. Tae Fever Ixreorép Districts.—Ports- youth is situated on the southwest side of the Elisabeth river; and at the commencement of the fever the population was about twelve thousand. Gosport is south of Portsmouth, a marsh, @ third of & mile in length, intervening, _and thus locally separating the two. population was about two thousand. They are under the same pee eo government. alert * tog FE known, is at Gosport. The epidemic first appeared in Gosport, having been b: it thither by the steamship Ben Franklin from St. Thomas, and the first case occurring on the 25th of June last, and the second case on the 4th of July, and the third case about the 20th of July. Since that time it has been spreading, although the physiciac- are — that itis not contagious. The opinion of Drs. Stone and Penviston, of New Orleans, is, that the number of deaths is smaller in BB at? xtion to » population, in Portsmouth and Ettollss than that in New Orleans. In Portsmouth and Gosport, there sre not now more than one thousand whites, or one out of every thirteen or fourteen of the permanent resident opale- tion: yet there are from twelve to fourtee: deaths. and, on an average, fifteen new cases, daily. Tr should be stated thst, beside Gosport, a lovelity, known as Newtown, is near the first ; and this, too, is Within the municipal erument of Portsmouth. Norfolk is on the northeast side of the river, about three-fourths of a mile from Portsmouth. ‘That entire section of country is low ground. The business portion of Norfolk is usually overfiowed twice a year—during the equinoc- ‘ tial gales. The newspapers have reprezented that cases of yellow fever have originated there; and as to Gosport, persons have, in that locality, contracted the disease, and aiter- ward spread themselves over Portsmouth and the adjacent country. Many indivictuals who have left Portsmouth and Norfolk are livingin barns, loghouses, &v., (whieh will eventually produce a great deal of siekness,) not a few of them without bedding, as such articles cannot be obtained—nothing of the kind being all te be taken from either of the above-named cities: The result of all this iz, that some of those who fled have returmed, preferring to meet the fever or death rather than, away trom the scenes of the in- fection, to linger out a miserable existence We may state, in this connection, that the want of physicians is severely felt—only three of the medical profession im these cities being able to attend to their d “Bwo have died; while others are down with the fever. Nortutrs Lrewr'—About half-past seven o'clock, last night, the northera portion of the heavens was illuminated with the hue of fire, which gradually shifted toward the east ; commencing, apparently, out Tenth and dis- ing at Four-and-a-half street. The at- tention ot our citizens was dirccted to the phe- ~ memenon, which some of them concluded must he the aurora borealis, wiile others thought ‘that it is not late in the season for such natural displays. Beside. the opinion was gravely pronounced that the reflection partook too mueh of the hue of fire. But the engine-bells were sounded, and the machines hauled out, and dragged as nearly as possible in the direction of the light, out Seventh st. The parties, however, returned after half an hour's absence, and one of them reported that they learned from a countryman, on his way to market, the reflection in the clouds wus caused by the burning of » barn or farm- house three or four miles distant from tho city. This fact being made known, of course the t opinion of the aurora is was surrendered. Siuee writing the above. we learned thot er's barn, ewan Ne considerable quantity of grain, situated above the tol!-gate, on the plank read, was destroyed by fire. Sree tion of or THe ALLIES.—Yesterday a por- Fifth Ward was in commotion be- cause of the combined attack of the forces of the city police and the couuty constabulary in the perforamance of duty, upon a house which had hitherto been considered impregnable. The assauit was led by officer Little, who suc- ceeded in obtaining admission by a strategem. As soon as the onjects of the officers were known, a sudden attack of the inmates forced them to evacuate - der ouse”” very suddeniy. Officers Wise and Simonds now weut tw the assistance of the county officers, and a scene ensued which we have not space to describe ; Lut “Sebastopol” was taken, and the garrison carried away prisoners to Batesville. The cers eogzaged in the couflict, wuched with charity, intertered in favor of the prisoners, and instead of sr Leg to bait tor eourt, which could Lave a done, they were or- dered to give security to keep the peace, with which requizement taey complied. Fire ax Water.—Between twelve and one cue o'clock this morning the fire bells sounded to one of the en- out, and dragged along by two persons only, in the direction of Georgetown, where, we learn, was the indica- tion of a raging fire—a fence, it is said, being D at of course this was not, at the time of the alarm, known to the couple of fire- men, who, in their commendable seal to save their neighbor's property from fire, bad ven- rain which was then descending. The result was, they returned to their homes dripping wet, for umbrellas are useless articles to the fraternity of which they analarm.
