aoe + ee —-— => ' EVENING STAR. a LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Yettow Fever.—A special despatch to» New York paper says: ‘The yellow fever is reported to be at the Washington Navy Yard. and there is quite an alarm in consequence throughout the city.’’ If this is so, we have been at a loss to ascertain any facts which would justify the above assertion. There is no ‘‘alarm’’ whatsoever. While alluding to this subject, it should be repeated, as the opinion of a majority of the medical profession, that the yellow fever never vails except in malarious districts. If this so, there is no cause for alarm in this city. It is an extraordinary fact that since the swamps in and about New York have becn drained and filled up, and a thorough system of drainage established, that city has, for thirty-thres year’, escaped the pestilence, with which, previously, it was frequently visited. notwithstanding its commercial communica- tions with the West Indies have been in- creased a thousand fold. In 1804, the disease appeared in Brooklyn, between which and New York there is only the East river, about three quarters of a mile in width. Several of the inhabitants of Brooklyn fled to New York, and died inthe houses of their friends; but the New York Board of Health knew of no in- stance in which it proved contagious. The city remaided exempt from pestilence during that season. The Richmond Examiner of a recent date ys: ‘To what a forlorn and wretched condition has our inhumanity reduced the afflicted peo- ple of Norfolk and Portsmouth? We cause every avenue of public conveyance, between themselves and the cities and towns around them, to be barricaded. We imprison them in their charne! house as if they were pirates and outlawed enemies of mankind. To con- tinue them in their infected habitations is to consign them to death. To allow them to es- cape into the pure atmosphere of the country, orthe untainted hospitalities of our villages and towns beyond the range of the pestilence, ie to relieve them from the jaws of an untimely grave. But we refuse them escape; we de- prive them of all means of making known tbeir wants and calamity. We doom them to a fate worse than the felons, in the calculating and callous indifference with which we con- template their furlorn estate.’’ Mr. George Kvnxet, (of the Kunkel Ope ta Treupe,) we learn, has contributed $25 woward the relief of the sufferers, by yellow fever, in Portsmouth, Gosport, and Norfolk, in addition to other sums privately contributed for that purpose. Although this announce- ment may be distasteful to him, we take the liberty of stating it as highly creditable to bis Kindness of heart, as well as to the warm spirit of liberality which has always distin- guished his cerduct. Other members of his jasuy populsr and taleated troupe have like- wise responded to the call on the philanthro- pic for assistance in this time of darkness and gicom prevalent in the yellow fever infected docalities. We have heard it intimated that they intend to give, in Baltimore, a+benefit for the sui- ferers, to take piace at the Holiday Street Theatre, where it is probable they will realize a larger amount of money than by an exhibi- tien for that purpose in Washington—the house being capable of accommodating many more persons than the saloon of Odd Fellows’ Hail. This troupe, as heretofore, will do their full Part toward the relief ef the distressed. They are a noble band A Srrerr Scexe.—In an article, yesterday, wwe spoke in reprobation of persons throwing wheir refuse fruit—such as watermelon and cantaloupe rinds—on the footways, to the danger of pedestrians, and thereby placing their bones in jeopardy or in contact with the pavemest. This morning, a friend of curs, pleasantly excited by the large and tempting display of good things at the Centre Market—his appetite Sbarp-set on procaring a ehuice supply of the articles—and forgetting the wise injunction. «Let him that thinketh he standeth take heed dest he fall,”’ while, with buoyant step passing along, suddenly lost his footing, having trot on & watermelon rind, and down he same to the earth, kis hat flying in one direction, and bis kettle and basket in another! They belong to the poorer class of venders in our markets; their garments being of the commonest kind, and even their feet insufficiently protected from the “bard road’ over which they have to sta- tedly ‘travel. with a view to procure, by the sale of their wares, the necessaries of life. __ The elder of those tao women. however, was in no condition te attend market, nor to un- dergo the fatizuc tneident to the long journey. While, last night, near the corner of ieee vanla avenug and Ninth street, watching her commodities, she was seized with illness. But kind friends removed her to a house in the neighborhood ; the services of a physician were procured, another member was added t her family—as we are informed. A Sap Spectacte.—We have noticed that during then gits preceding the salesday at the Centre Market, the venders from the country, who are too poor to furnish themselves with Wagons—in which to bring hither their sup- plies, as well as eerve the purpose of bed- Steads—resort to the gutters; where they Spread straw, making the curb stones thedc ey ows; und seem, like true philosophers, to ¢ grateful that they can there indulge in “ nature's sweet restorer, balmy sleep.”” Last night, however, these poor people were dis- turbed from their slumbers, not by human, but by uatural agency—the rain; which fell heavily; causiog theia to desert their lowly beds and to take shelter under that spacioui umbrella—the market-house. Agres?.—John Carrico was arrested yester- day, by officers Willett and Little, at the rail- Toad station, te he was in the private Apartment of ene of rs. He had been revious!y arrested, and had given security or a further hearing on a charge of rape, but failing to appear, the officers went in search and found him av above stated. Moreover, we doubt very much whether Mr E. ever fully consented ‘that his name should ge before the people as a candidate under the circumstances. We are led to doubt it from our kuowledze of his nutipathy to being inixed up in political excltements at any time. More- over, we know Mr. Rdes to be a warm friend to publ vrovements; and as one of the main objects of a large majority of the arty who bave nominated bim ia the defeat, ii possible, of certain improvements of vital importance to the town by electing bim, if they ean, to the Board of Aldermen, and thereby causing a vacancy in the Common Council to be filled by a member of their own party and an enemy to publicimprovements. If Mr. Edes is elect- ed, we think it very doubtful whether he will resign his seat in the Board of Common Coan- cil after he discovers that his nomination is mainly a trick, a stratagem of the enemies of the Metropolitan railroad (he being a warm friend of it and one of the directors,) to bring about the repudiation of our Corporation’s subscription to the stock, by securing a ma- jority of one in the lower Board The flour anil grain markets remain steady at our prices of yesterday. They succeeded in making fast to one large fellow, and hauled the boat up to him to cutoff his sword. but owing to the strugzles of the fish, the spade struck his body and cut out tho iron which held him. Mad- dened by pain, the enraged fish retreated some distance, and then turning, made for the boat with prodigious violence, making the water foam around him. Just before reach- ing her, Cuptaia Eldridge threw an iron at him, which struck him, and served to check his headway so much that he struck the boat but lightly, his sword going through but a few inches, and breaking off.
