They have been engaged by the Kunkel troupe by way of variety to the concert per- formances, and with a view to the ifica- tion of the public. To be fully appreciated these ‘‘ little folks’’ must be seen and heard. They decidedly possess much musical talent, and render their songs with much archness and cunning powers of mimicry. Sorrces or Dan If we mistake not, there is a law prohibiting, under penalty, the throwing of water-melon and cantaleup rinds, and such like refuse < =— in ag iia by stepping on the slippery fragments, ast “ are able to be thrown down, and per- Taps erippled for life In fact, we are ac- quainted with an elderly lady, who was thus tripped, and broke her leg, some years ago, from the effect of which accident she is a sufferer; and we frequently hear of persons suddenly falling to the earth from such causes. If the law has no terrors for those who thus dispose of the useless parts of the fruit which they consume, we appeal to them in the name f of jaa to throw them into the street, rovided they select public places for the in- Sew of their appetites. This may appear to be a trifling subject to some folks, but it assumes a grave t when considered in connection with barked ankles, broken legs, and injured apine. ‘ Por?sMouTs AND Gosport Mecuasics.—We learn that not more than one-fourth, or four hundred, of the entire number of mechanics attached to the Gosport navy yard, are now ewployed at those public works; the others having left that vicinity on account of the prev- alence of the yellow fever. And about the fame proportion of mechanics engaged else- where, remain. They who have fled to health- ful parts of the country, we are gratified to learn, have, for the most part, succeeded in obtaining employment at the various branches of their necessary and honorabie craft. Those in Washington have nearly all been provided for, in this respect; an event which is caleu- lated to cheer their hearts, under the depress- ing circumstances which induced them to quit their permanent homes, for a season, which, we trust, will be brief, as we ure sincereiy hopeful that the ravages of the pestilence will soon cease to exist. ‘ A Mistaxe.—The captain of a vessel lying at Alexandria, while paying his men yester- day made a mistake by giving each one a month’s wages more than he was entitled to. The men were soon missed, and the captain diseovering his error immediately followed them to this city, where he obtained the assis- tance of the police officers and the suxiliary guard. After searching ali the localities where they were likely to rendezvous, they were found, two at the steamboat wharf, preparing ‘ to depart in the steamer Columbia, and three at the railroad station, waiting to leave in the eare this morning. The captain’s money was recovered, and the men (ali colored) were dis- missed. The uneasiness of the captain is more easily imagined than described. All the offi- cers, it should bestated to their praise. refused any compensation whatever for their services; the man evidently being poor ~ ' \ Sraive Garpeys.—A happy company a3- sembled last evening at the Spring Gardens, (late Favier’s Garden,) on the corner of Twen- tieth and M streets, for a turn at dancing un- der the influence of the balmy atmosphere which graced the night. The impedimeni to loco- motien consists of a huge pile of dirt; bus, so far as we are capable of judging, it possesses no architectural form norbeauty. It may, per- haps, be moulded into shape to serve the pur- pese of an observatory, for aught we know to the contrary; or, perbaps, the dirt is thera deposited as a specimen of the original earthy forwation. But whatever may be the object the pile and its exhibition, persons whe prefer . their legs. for moving » 0 horseflesh, are in danger of embracing their mother dirt in a manner which, to say the least, would be | amore disagreeable than pleasant ! t A Roe ov rae Covrr —We have heard of 3 rule of the court which is not generally known, but which is followed by the captain of the aux- iliary guard in all eases of consequence. It was not until after we had dispatched our letter of a for the Star office, that we learned definitely that Mr. Mitchell had posi- tively declined the nomination tendered him by the Know Nothings for the vacant seat in the Board of Aldermen. From all we can learn, we think it likely there has been vo little trouble in the camp among the disciples of ‘‘Sam’’ in their efforts to concentrate their forces upon a candidate for the above meti- tioned post. A mecting was to have been held last night for the purpose of making ano- ther effort to secure a candidate. What the result was, we have not yet learned. We think it likely that no nomination was made: had thero been, it would have been known outside before this. Let not the friends of Mr. Beall, however, be deceived and fail to go to the polls and vote by any supposed divi- sions among, or failure upon the part of their opponents to nominate a candidate. One thing is certain, they (the Know Nothings) will not support Mr. B., and after all it may turn out that there is some scheme about the matter in- tended to divert the anti-Know Nothings from polling their full strength. Verbum sap. The revival at the west Georgetown Metho- dist Church, under the pastoral charge of Mr. Speaks, is still progressing. Meetings of a very solemn and ixteresting eharacter are held nightly, which are attended by large and at- tentive congregations. A considerable num- = has already been added to the member- ship. A new Sunday race-course has recently been established on some of the streets in the eastern part of our city. On Sunday before last, some eight or ten hacks from Washing- ton, on their return from a funeral, (we are sorry to admit it,) ran a raze down Green street. Nearly the whole length of it, the horses were run at full speed by their cruel drivers, each of which applied the whip to the dumb animals with an unsparing hand. The seene for a while was truly frightful. Not only were the lives and limbs of those in the vehicles at the time endangered, but those of the multitude of children who are generally about the erossings of the streets in this por- tion of the city on an afternoon On last Sab- bath, the same disgraceful sport was repeated on the same street by parties on horseback. We have been requested to say that any amount of money, however small, left with ou fellow citizen, W. H. Edes, Esq., will be forwarded without delay to relieve the suffer- ers at Portsmouth and Norfolk. One benevo- lent gentleman commenced the 1 work this morning, and we hope that hundreds of others will go and do likewise, so that a handsome amount may speedily be raised for the relief of our distressed and suffering fellow-country- men. The flour market remains quiet and but little doing ; small sales at $9239 25 Wheat is beginning to corre in more plenty, and mil- lers appear less anxious to purchase to any ex- tent at the present prices. Sixeunar Scicipe or a Boy.—Much excite- ment was caused on Friday evening, at Eighth and Vine streets, by the discovery that a boy only thirteen years of age, named Albert Mi- gran, living with his uncle, A. Roidot, drug- gist, southwest corner of tho streets just men- tioned, had committed suicide. About six o'clock the body of the boy was found ceated in the outhouse, in the rear of the premises, with one of his suspenders about his neck. Life wes extinct. It was supposed that the youth had tied the saspender about his neck and pulled upon the endz nntil he was stran- gled. He had been missing about ten minutes when the body was discovered, and hopes were entertained that animation could be restored. But efforts to that effect were of no avail. The devessed yas in the habit of committing acts of foolish daring, and bis friends belioye that the act was intended as a mere bravado, a)- though it proved fatal. Coroner Delavan held an inquest upon the body, and a verdict of ‘suicide by strangling’’ was rendered.—Phil. North American, Monday. Tar Pickpockets are waving 2 rich harvest at Saratoga just now. Beside large numbers of gold watches and jewelry missing, one of the boarders at one of the first class hotels had his wallet taken from his pocket, while bath- ing, containing $8,000, to recover which he offers, in one of the New York city papers, $1,000 reward.
