[From the Rochester Union of August 3.) A singular suicide took place at the Eagle Hotel in this city, yester rah On Weduesiay evening a young lady came by cars from Av- burn, and took lodgings at the hotel. S_» remained in her room during the night, and nothing unusual was discovered in her rppe ance and deportment. Yesterday morning she ate some tvast, butdid nut go to the breax- fast table. Some time towards noon she ca lel the bell boy of the house, and asked him to lo some errands for her. He was ready to go, but she hesitated, he says, in giving her com- mands. Finally, however, she summoned enough determination to tell bim to purchased bere ‘an, some other articles, and three cents’ worth f rat poison The boy bought the articles named, including the poison, which he ob- tained at a drug store. The girl doubtless ok a portion of the poison immedistely after it wastsken to her, and at noon was seized with vomiting, and called for medical aid Dr. Moore ealled, and suspected, after inquir- tug her symptoms, that she had taken poison, but she deuied the fact so resolutely, that ens- picion was partially lulled. Her sufferings vecame more intense a short time after, and lespite of medical aid, she expired in great agony at s late hour last evening. Before her death sue stated that her nome was Caroline Bay!ey, and that her father Ab- ver Bayley, resides at Auburn. Up to the iast momeut of her life. she id not give any further account of herself than name and residence. She would not admit that she hud taken poison, or that she meditated self-de- struction. Towards her lact hour she begged for medicine to relieve her from pain. The appearance of the young lady was ra- She is rather above m size, and her hands indicated that she had toiled somewhat. Awong her effects were five shil- tings in money aud some letters. Ove letter sives something of a clue to the mystery at- vending her sad end. It was written by a female cousin, named Decker, and alludes to 4 misunderstanding that exirted betweeo the feceased and a young man named Craig. They had been ander engagement for mor- riage, but had become a’ tted and this con- writes that she endeayored to reconcile Cra‘g. Coroner Quinn came immediately aft>r she died, and at once called a jury of inquest. After sitting sometime without umportauc rs sults, the jury adjourned to meet again thas evening. Drs. Robinson and Bly held a post mortem ex.mination on the bedy tuis morning. This xsMination a the feet beyond all qu-s- tion or probability of doubt that the deceased was chaste. When the jury meots at 7 this evening, tho result of the in-dival examination will b> laid before them. The physicians express the be- lief that the deceased was not more than twenty years of age.
