4 J . ' a ) 4 , EVENING STAR. LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. AScexz.—In our brief account of the ex- eursion of the National Guard yesterday, we neglected to meation that, among the hun- dreds composing the ampen , were Col. Hic- kie, the commander of istrict of — bia regiment ; Major Bacon, paymaster, representatives from nearly all of our fine mil- ite ry companies. participated in We that those who the entertainment, will, if they have not al- ready done 0, each for himself or herself, re- late privately to their friends some of the inci- dents of the trip, which, according to our in- formation, were not all of a delightfal charac- ter. It may be repeated, that, instead of the company visiting Piney Point on Thursday, and returning by midnight, they were detained until Friday, near noon, from reaching the Washington wharf ; right glad, doubtless, to be again restored to land. it should be remembered, by the way, that the arrangements of the National Guard were excellent, but the ‘‘slow beat’’ spuiled the Having reached Piney Point, stopping there a short time, and while on the ‘* bomeward’”’ track, many of the pleasure party were at- tacked with sea-sickness ; and any one who has seen or experienced the effects of it, may im- ine the scene presented. It is unnecessary to say that they did not ‘sit like Patience on a monument,’’ smiling at the dashings of the watery expanse spread out before them! In- stead of tue glow of the rose on the cheek of beauty, there was an ashy paleness; the voice of laughter was not heard, but groans and la- mentations ; nor were the ‘‘ sterner sex,’’ as they are stereotypedly called, in a condition to fight the battles of their country. A sickly- looking party it was throughout, excepting, of course, the vilicers of the boat and their men, and persons of the male kind whose stomachs were proof against the Aeaving influence of the billows, and the rocking of the steamer. As to the dresses of the fair—white when they bor se fugu = a an opinion upon them. ey were draggle worse than = costume of the ch fe young lady, who, as tradition says, onee en- deavored to wade across the Potomac, but was wet above the ankles in the fruitless effort. There was a good deal of rain on the river, which acted, occasionally, as a shower-bath. If it was a pleasure excursion homeward, we are iuclined to think. according to the uarra- tive of an informant, it was a decided failure. What added to the discomfort was the giving out of provisions, and 4 consequent reduction of “rations.’’ Nothing need be said about the sleeping accoumodations. Every oue for himself, and the planks of the steamer for all. It is not plore A that the majority of those who com that party desire ever again to be placed in a similar ‘ fix.’’ It wasanevent “Jong to be remembered’’—a prominent fea- ture in the extended list of excursions which have taken place during the present season. Tas Cawp-Meetinég.—The camp-meeting now progressing in the woods of Col. Wm. Minor, j aes Bs county, Va, is, so far. attended principally by families identified with the Protestant Methodist Church. Among the families camping there are those.of the Rey. Mr. Lipscomb, Mrs. Wrea, Mr. Hunter, and others, of Fairfax county; Col. Wm. Minor, Dr. Wunder, W. D. Wallach, R. L. Brockett, Charles Smoot. John McCormick, Smith Minor, Ar. Lemon, Mr. Newton, Major Wm. D. Nutt, and others, from Alexandria eity and county. There are also commodious and well appointed boarding-tents, in charge of persons trom Washington ani Alexandria, for the accommodation of visitors from these cities and other strangers. The preachers. too, have a fine tent. Of the clergymen on the und, we noticed, last night, the Kev. Messrs. ipssomb, Drinkhaus, Manag, Sutherland, Shreeves, and others. The sermon of last night was preached by the Rey. Mr. Shreeves, t an audience as attentive as we ever saw a congregation anywhere. So far, few have heen upon the ground, except ti deeply interested in the cause of reliziv whiel gerves to render it peculiarly interesting tothe friends of that eause. The at whieh i is beld is a beautifu! grove. on a crowning a c. sloping bill, at the base of which there # &@ copious spring of pure, cuol, and sparkling water—a spot on which, in the last tweuty years, similar religious festivals have frequent- ly been held. The weather is charming, in- deed, and all on the ground are enjoyirg them- selves with at gest. The Kev. Mossrs. Stockton and Webster. of Baltimore, eminent Protestant Methodist divines, are expected to be there and preach to-morr The latter, we understand, officiated at u camp-meetingin the same grove twenty years ago to-morrow. Taz Gaizzty Bear.—Since our recent an- houncement that a grizziy bear, from the Rocky Mvuntains, was to be seen at the grounds t i ef the Smithsonian Institution, hundreds of lovers of zoological specimens have resorted thither to gratify their taste, and to admire the fine proportions of the distinguished ftrauger. But, unfortunately, they bappeved to be a little too late; the animal, after luxu- riating at that depository of art and seience, Was trausferred to the furm of the Insane Asylum, where there was already a large col jection of undomesticated quadrupeds. We do not wish to be understood a3 saying there Was anything mentally wrong with the bear, although his affection not unfrequently leads him to bug more earnestly than is compatible With human propriety or comfort We learn that aa officer connected with the Smithsonian Institution has been considerably annoyed by tors, whe so frequently ask him -‘where’s the bear, sir?’ “It's not here.”’ ‘Where is it!” ue to the In- tane Asyium.”’ “ What! is it erazy?’" asks ap aged matron, in tencs of surprise. “It's feat there to Le taken care of, and to bo kept out of harm's way.” The polite and accom- modating janitor, searcely freed from this dia- Jogue, is again interrupted by a nurse and half a dozen small children, who come to see the bear. Explanations are again to be made, aud replies given to very many quesiions. A retreat from such annoyances is next to im- possible, and his patience is subjected to a tual which would require the nerve of the Ssternest philosopher to preserve. But still he must be int-rrogated, both on the grounds and in the streets, until he ex-lai I wish [ had never seen the bear; I'm sorry it wasever brought here!’’ “ Will itcome back again /”’ calmly inquires a precocious youth, winle the crowd, which the interrogatory has summoned, breathlessly await the reply. This is too much—an oral attack which Job himself. b fore his affliction with ‘+ boils,’ could not bave borne! +: The bear!’ * the bear!"’ nothing bat the bear!” Truly, old Bruia is highly honored. We have heard of people being * croz3 a3 a bear with a sore head;’’ and it is reasonable to presume that any person approached with euch showers of questions eonceruing the Rocky Mountain animal, would be in a simi- lar predicament; although the contrary is of course the fact regarding the janitor of the Smithsonian Institution. Excursioxs.—The first grand prize exeur- sion of tue Ben Franklin Target Company. will take place on Monday, at Arlington Springs. Afuli cotillion and military band has been engaged for the oceasion. Prizes are to be shot for; a magnificent medallion for the lad and aveluable breastpin for the gentlemen. Boats will run all day from the Fourteenth street bridge to Arlington and back. The Empiie Club, too, will, on Monday, give an excursion and pic-nic, going to the White “louse, having chartered the steamer George Washington for the cceasion. The best eotil- lion music has been engaged, a welcome piece of news to the lovers of dancing. For the particulars, we refer those inter- ested in these excursions to our aivertising columns. Conoxer’s Ixgvest.—A now born white fe- male infart was found on the grounds of the Washington City Orphan Asylum, by one of tue male orphans B jury was summoned by Oficer Hauty; Justice loddard acting aa coroner. After hearing the statements of the witnesses, the jury decided that the child was born alive, but died from violence at the hands of some person or persons unknown. The child bad beeu put through a hole in the fence dying the night. \ tuiclde, yesterda: e, Sta urally ited, i a rej in that fear a his liberality minutes before the sad event a Washington conversed with him at his office door, but perceived nothing in his manner that indicated mental disease. Accipent.—Yesterday morning, an old man a Mr. MeAvoy, employed at the Nosy Yard to prepare the fires and oil the machinery in the engine room, was unfortunately caught iti the machinery, and one of his lezs was bi ed above the knee, so as to render amputation ly crush- necessary, which was performed last eveuing. It is feared that the accident will result fa- tally, because of the age of the sufferer. At the time of the occurrence he was engaged in oiling the machinery, when the signal was given, and the engineer, without being aware of his presence, turned the steam on, with the effect above related. The sufferer is said to be sixty-six years of age The operation was performed by Dr. Berry, one of the most skill- ful surgeons in Washington, assisted by Drs. Roberts and Semmes. The patient is doing well, we hear. Tae Eprror or tux Tavts thus discourseth on foreign affairs : In the National Irtelligencer of July 30, 1395, is a long article headed The eastern war. As a true lover of God, and a man of peace, Iwarn the American Government not to be carried away by any such Sentiments as is therein expressed, for if you do you will end it. This war is a war for principle, yet selfish interest was at the foundation of it. When The aoe of the French found the war sMmrit of his people boiling over he sought an outlet to their hot blood, and to aid in Crush- ing Liberal principles, be Joined with Eng- land. Our Step Mother, to humble Russia, then crush American Institutions, and set up Monarchal Governments in the New World as they have in the Old. but God is at the helm, and he will rule the Storm, so therefore Ict us mind our own business. and we will find enough te do without interfering with the af- fairs of other Nations. Let us remember the warning voice of Washington, and act out the principles of Jefferson, and seek to do what we know to be right in God’s sight, and be wili bless us so that this continent will yet eontain at least one thersend million of inhabitants enjoying that happiness designed for our race. with the privilege of worshipping God, accord- ing to his own will. To wit— In Spirit and in Truth.”” John 4, 24. Such is my prayer, to My God, who is my friend and only guide in this life. A Trur Frrexp to Rite Washington, July 30, 1855. Lararerre Squarr.—Repeated applications having been made to the Commissioner of Pub- lic Buildings to haye Luafayetie Square kept open, until 10 o'clock at night, tor the public accommodation, and the Secretary of the In- terior having authorized him to employ « watchman for that purpose, the square will be open every night until that hour, except on rainy eveniags, when no ove would be dis- posed to visit it for recreation. Centre Manker.—We think that never be- fore was a more plentiful, superzbundant sup- ply of vegetables and fruits displayed in this city than during this morning. The market pre mises not being sufficiently large for all the dealers, many of them had to string their sup- plies along the line of the Avenue, extending 23 far westward as Eleventh street. The prices were moderate. Butter and eggs, however, smaintain their former rates. Niveves.—John W. Veitch, of Alezandri county, Ve.. requesta us to say that find: Kuow Notaiogi-m antegonistic’ to the Principles ot cavil and retizgious liberty, he has concluded to withdraw from all connection with it, and by this publication hereby wa-hes bis hands of it, its purposes. obligations and practices. Boats anp Bers.—Quite a number of young men are preparing their small crafts to follow ia the wake of the regutta which is to come off oa the 8th instant. Others are ‘shelling out their dimes’ in bets upon their favorites. A the boats entered are in excellent order, and the sailing master of each is confident of suceess. We hope that no accident or unfavorable cir cumstanve may oceur to mar the pleasure of those concerned. Corercriox.—In the card of Baldwin & Nenning, published in the Star of yesterday, with reference to the Western Market, owins t a typographical error they were represented as saying they objected ‘very much to the making of all those parts which the plans and mutual understanding du designate as horizontal ones.’’ The word “ waking ’ should have been printed raking. dn If the owners of dogs in the North- ern erties have any feeling for sick people in that part of thecity, they willeither silence their nightly howling canines by means of mezzles or removing them ty some locality where they ean how! without disturbing or en- ugering the lives of human beings. Matciovs Miscmier.— Many complaints have been mate cf persons going abo : city at night, amusing themselves by de g and injuring public and private property, but unfortunateiy no one has yet been caught in the act, so as to make punishment certain The bridge over the canal at 14th street shows marks of violence at the hands of the destrue- tiomsis. A Disarpoistwext.—We learn that many persons were offended by a failure to settle a little matter in the Sixth Ward last evening. A large crowd had assembled as spectators, but left for their homes, some grumbling, others rejoicing. The police were also at hand. Firta Warp Poticr.—Justice Bates dis- posed of the following cases yesterday: Mar- tha Cansten, security for peace; Mary Me- Laugalin, assault, dismissed ; Tom Butler, as sault and battery, jail. Tom was also charged with an offence which is always punished with severity. but the case was dismissed. Warca Returxs.—Thedockct at the guard house exhibited n6 cases for trial or publica- tion this morning ; and the magistrate and po lice officer left for their wards well satisfied with the appearance of things. The rooms, beds, and bedding were all ‘‘ to let.”’ CULPEPPER CORRESPONDENCE. CeLperrer C. H., Augast 3, 1895. This pleasant village, the county seat of Culpepper, though far inferior to many of its sisterhood in beauty of situation and architec- tual embellishment, yet in the salubrity of its atmosphere, and the warm hearted sociability of its people is, by no means, behind the most favored of its sisters ; the most ample acceomo- dation for the religious worship of four differ- ent denominations, private dwellings of va- rious style and finish, a sprinkling of stores, and quite a number of artizans in the various branches of human skill, make Culpepper Court House quite a pleasant dwelling plas, and few ever pass a day within its limits with- out carrying away with them the most fayora- ble notions of its people. Since the erection of the depot of the Orange and Alexandria railroad, the village has thrown off its old and decayed appearance, und exhibits a spirit of the age; excellent plank walks have ee laid in many portions of the Streets, aul the authorities are stil] at work im- proving the principal thoroughfares. ‘The Waverly House, (newly built.) near the depot, is a neat, symetrizal hotel, that would uot be out of place in the streets of Washing- ton. Its interior arrangements are with those of more extensive establishments Our old friend of the Virginia House, M. Mtllan, keops et that comfort of traveiers, an old fashioned - Hill, of the Waverly, is building a fine residence adjacent to the village, and several smaller works are in i i The Star was, not long since, a welcome vis- iter at many of the doors of the denizens of Culpepper, and under the new schedule, the enterprise of your indefatigable young agent, E. B. Manzy, will again give the people here the daily record of Washington and Alexandria news. AGENS. Warnine To Gamacers.—The Paris corres- pondent of the New York Evening Post writes as follows in relation to the late Mr. Hove, about whom so much has been said since his decease: ‘ The estate of Mr. Hope, one of the sons of the Amstetdam banker, is fast liqui- «dating, and to the horror of the Parisians who worshipped at his Midas, it appears to be ra- ther a small one—such an humble fortune as ade Rothschild or an Astor would regard as nothing ; for if the heir receives several hun- dred thousand dollars, it is all he will get Le pauvre homme! What a lesson to the ecard player! Here is a man who had $300,000 x year, and who felt 2 passion for gambling late in life—its gratification cost him nearly twelve millions of dollars, and left him after a brief gratification, (for he died at the age of fifty-two years,) with a shattered fortune. If these financial lords cannot safely play with such an edged tool, in Heaven's name what can the lower classes of money hope!” @P We are much gratified to learn through a friend just from Portamouth that the diokness which prevailed at Gosport (adjoining Ports mouth) has greatly abated, and has assumed so little of the epidemic form that confidence is restored. Very many citizens who had re- paired to Old Point Comfort, so as to be beyond the reach of the epidemic, have returned to their homes, and the Willard Hotel at that brated watering place, though having a very large number of guests sojourning there. has yet ample and excellent accommodations for a much larger number.—Union of to-day. A New Way to Cook Carckess.—The fol- towing is highly recommended: “Cut the chicken up, put itin a pan and cover it over with water; let it stew as usual, and whe done make a thickening of cream and flou adding a piece of butter and pepper and s: have made and baked a pair of short cakes made as for a pie erust, but rolled thin andi cut in small squares. This is much bettcr than chicken pie, and more simple to make The crusts should be laid on a dish, and the chicken gravy put over it while both are hot.”” f° The MeConnesville Enquirer chronicles the doings of some miscreants near that plac which for wickedness ** beats the devil.’ Pir they eut or sawed off the trees in a young aprile erchard—secondly, stuck iron spikes in the ground in a meadow which was ready for the seythe—thirdly, let down the fences to two corn fields. and drove in a number of hogs and thirty head of cattle. This was done to the property of a woman. [= The Greenbrier Era notices that Rey. “. Black, a few days since, preached at Wil liam’s river, in that county.
