A ———————— LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. A Fearvre or Natvraz, ilistory.—Y -—Yee- terday r in the vicinity of the Centre Market, while a flock of sheep were peaceably bers slong, harming nobody, “a jean, » from the sidewalk into the street, and, with a remarkable degrea of friskiness, fan to bark, in sh: tones, at a matronly-looking ewe, which was lingering in the rear. At first, no notice Was taken of his intrasion and his noise; but, as if determined to produce an excitement, he rushed into the flock, continuing to bark, ernie as if = hi were designed for the amusement of his unwilling juadruped audi- He then skipped to the rear, and re- aforesaid matronly- All the sheep, red of them, this note having been sounded, turned round, not one after ps) Bon but precisely at the same time, and di- rected at the “lean, lauk’’ dog a volley of “bab, babs!” all looking at him with intense a3 much as t> say, “ You mis- canine, how dare you intrude into di our peace? You raseal, what harm have we done that ? You ought to be ashamed “Bah! bah!” him. The sheep, having rid themselves of the black “ugly customer,’’ quietly pres Joend, ss systematically as a compan: iers, resumed the ‘‘even tenor of their way.” A Lanes Party or Persons, enough to compose a good-sized vill for it is said there were from five to eight hundred of them— left this city yesterday morning on the excur- sion projected by the National Guard, to Piney Point, they having chartered the swift and mail steamer, the Mount Vernon, for their purpose. daceeting to the me, the party were fwagrive at the prin gra areca, re- prising there several hours, and returning the city at twelve o'clock at night; bat at one o’clock yesterday sfternoon, they were only thi miles belog Alexandria, or one- piss of the distance only to the Point. Tho was, as may be supposed, uncomfortabiy crowded, and therefore made but slow head- way, contrary to her reputation for swiftness. About gd arg left the boat at Alexandria and the White House, and returned to Wash- ington by another mode of conyeyaace. All Safe !—The excursion of the National Guards, which left this city yesterday morn- ing, at 74 o'clock, returned at 10 minutes befure 12 o’clock m. to-day. The steamer reached Piney Point at 8} o’clock, where the company remained until 20 minutes after 12 o’olock this ing, and arriving at the time above-men- Girned-ap accident any kind occurring. Taz TazaTre.—Artists and workmen are busy in fitting up the National Theatre for the fall and winter seasons, our play-going fellow- citizens will be glad to learn. Excursion to tax Ware Hovse.—The Montgomery Guards, yesterday, had their an- Ln exeursion to this favorite plgce, and, not- ing the unfavorable appearance of the weather, the fast steamer George Wash- ington was filled with ladies and gentlemen from Georgetown and Washington. Fischer's band was in attendance, and discussed their Sweetest music. On the arrival of the com- pany at the White House they found « large company present, who had started early in the morning on the steamer Mount Vernon on en excursion to Piney Point, but who had changed their minds and landed there. Everything off harmoniously, and the party en- red themselves very happily in dancing and amusements. A number of members of other military companies were in atiendance. Altogether this was one of the most pleasant excursions of the season. The company, on their return. arrived at Washington about ten §-m., all highly pleased and gratified, and without anything wecurring to mar their plea- bu re. Goons Inantirtep.—We stated on Wednes- day that a boy, between seven and eight years of age. offered to sell to a son of Captain Lul- lay, about the same size as himself, a piece of calico, for the small sum of six and a quarter centa, and that another son, four years the se- ior of his brother, wilnessiog the proceed- iggs, seized the goods, which he carried to his fgther, the latter ieaying them at the Star Office for reclamation. And yesterday we re- corded another similar instance; a bundle «f calico being offered for sale to a lady fur twenty-five cents! The cheapness of the arti- ele induced her to s t that it was stolen, and she therefore it in the hands of of- ficer Wollard, who left it to be claimed by the owner at the office of Justice Smith. We learned this morning that these pieces of calico ave been identified; the one belonging to White & Sons, and the other toJames L. White, merchants. They were evidently stolen from those gentlemen. Taz Boat Exvizaseru was missed yesterday from the place where she is usually kept. lu- formation was given to the owner, Mr. J. Rey- nolds, who instantly started ia search of her. She was found near Georgetown last night; her sails torn, and the boat otherwise injured. The sailing party who had possession of her are known, and the manner of obtaiuing pos- session has also buen stated to the owner. A!- though this way of obtsining boats is not law- ful, still he does not wish to proseczte when the punishment would fall heavily on counexiong of the parties concerned. Rior—On Monday night one of those dis- Staceful riots, so common among unlawful gatherings where liquor has the control, came off in the northern part of Tenth street, better known as Negro Hill. One of the persons con- cerned was stabbed three times during the fight. Officers Fanning and Stewart have ar- rested seven of the combatants, who have been held to bail for @ further hearing. Ail those arrested are colored persons, and the wounded man we bear is not dangerously injured. ARRESTED oy Susriciox.—James Gibbs, a Strapger in Washington, was arrested ‘last pight by Messrs Bell and Dyer. of the aux- iliasy guard, on suspicion of being the person who entered Mr. T. H. Havener’s house the =< previous. The circumstances being in- suficient to justify the commitment for court, be was disch: this morning with a severe lecture, after promising immediate immigra- Hon from this burg. We hopc, before it is too late, the Councils will order it otherwise. ‘“ Barowin & Newwrxe, Architects.” Nobody will derive from these words that we object to the site of the market (hill site) upon which it is to be built, but very much to the making of all those parts which the plans and mutua: understanding do designate as hori- zontal ones. The plans were drawnon a leve! line, on the special order of the proper author- ities; and how to adapt them to the prese:it line is an easy matter, not to be discussed in these lines. ith regard to “‘ Public Good's” rbha, es on the originating and authorship of the plans we feel not inclined to enter int» = discussion.
