EVENING STAR. LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. - Contest witn 4 Barren or Frotr.—We were much amused yesterday afternoon, by an oceurrence in the Northern iberties, whieb although trivial, served the of hearty leugheer - _ — < ani, notwith- ing the heat e@ weather, Peel Phas A _ er, were jack fellow was engaged by a cer to take a barrel of flour ton customer Son be- fore entering-npon the important errand, he swallowed a quantity of whiskey with a view that the , the liquor might be in- corporated with his enervated frame. The dre y, Nowerer, had a contrary and weak- ening effect, especially in his 3 and, therefore, Sia ae muchas relia do to preserve hi y in equilibrio. However, he undertook the ak tate the barrel he made various attempts to transfer it to his wheelbarrow, until, pitching a little too much to one side of it, he lost his. balance and fell upon the pavement, the barrel rolling upon him! Not conquered in the contest, he re- fumed bis operations, but with no better suc- cess than before. In the struggle with his inanimate companion, his ebery vi got thickly powdered with the flour which had been jolted out of the barrel; and the ap- | eraser of the man was now rendered more udicrous than at the commencement of the extraordinary and fatiguing exervises. Perseverance, it is said, conquers all things, and, acting on this motto, he triumphed. The barrel was now on the wheelbarrow, but the task remained of trundling it home. | So, with it he staggered first to one side of the pave- ment and then to the other, and came near precipitating himself and the flour. down an open cellar. Among other mishaps he lost his way, taking a direction opposite to that of the purchaser of the flour. x scouting party was sent out in pursuit. We have not heard the result, but presume that the search was crowned with success. Ronsrry snp ARREST.—Spaliling C. Moore and John W. Moore wers aurdsted Inst night by the auxiliary guard and conveyed to the guard house, charged, the former with receiy- tog, the latter-named with carrying away, dry goods, the property of William &. Riley, a merchant. The value of those found in a trunk belonging to John W. Moore. is thought to be near five hundred dollars Spalding C. Moore is the father of J. W. Moore, who has been employed in the store of Mr. Riley for months pact, and keeper of a store in Mary- land. The goods taken consisted of valuable ziiks and favey articles, such as would sell readily and rapidly anywhere. The case ex- cited a great deal of sympathy as well as eu- Yiosity among the crowd of persons usually near the guard house, especially on market slays, most of them pitying the young man, while few expressed a sentiment favorable to the parent. Both were committed to jail for a further hearing by Captain Birch, and an order issued immediately to search the pre- 4wises of the father in Maryland, and proper officers selected for the se. This deserip- tion of robbery, wish ¢ ne policemen call “weeding,” is thought to have been earried on, at the expense of Mr. Riley, for nearly _ twelve months. Tae Cirevs was Cour !—This morning, a recession of the establishment of Rivers & eTious, —— by a band of music, passed through the streets, serving as a lucomoting advertisement. Horses, ridden by persons con- nected with the equestrian corps, and a large namber of wagons, containing the fixtures, drawn by quadrupeds, esteemed, probably, more on account of their pulling properties than for their anatomical beauty, formed the cortege. In one of the closed carriages were the two Russian bears. which exhibited their noses at the window while inhaling the fresh air. Crowds of boys kept pace with that part of the esta! ment, for a bear's snout, even, in these days, serves to gratify juvenile eu- riesity for strange ts. Hundreds of other lads followed the procession. highly delighted and excited with the seene. The pavilion is pitched. and ready for the varied sports. licutsixe Errecrs.—Last night, during the prevalence of the storm, the lightning struck the southwest corner of the store of Clagett, Newton, May'& Co., sweeping away two dozex or more bricks. Fortunately, no body happened to be passing there at the time of the occurrence Ona Thursday, between one and two o'clock, three persons, in the Seventh Ward. were sen- sibly shocked by the eleetric ftuid (nut Dr. De Grath’s.) and had their clothes torn by that tearful agency, which likewise struck a ecdar fost, sending splinters from it across the street Ax Exressive Levy!—A constable of this county, having obtained a judgment against another person, and being unable to eollect the amount af the debt or the costs, went on Thurs4ay last to the debtor's house to seize on his furniture. No resistance was made, and the officer quietly took possession of the fol- lowing newed articles. all that he discovered on the premises: A child’s rocking chair, broken; an old willow ket; an earthen jar, and a plug of tobac We presume the agent of the law will give speedy notice of his intention te sell, as all such articles are in de- mand in this goodly city—cbildren’s rocking chairs especially, and the Indian weed partic- ‘ularly. Taareweees Cuanity.—Thomas Car- berry, Esq.. treasurer, received, on the 14th instant, fiity dollars, as a contribution to St. Vincent's Orphan Asylum, under the direc- tien of the Sisters of Charity, from “A Stranger.’ Thi gratifying fact has, we be- lieve, been Lereiofore published; but it is worthy of reprodrtion, and should serve as an example to those who have an abundance of ‘this world’s goods’’ te contribute to the relief of the parent! css ones.
