An odd notion seems to be inher- ent in the atmosphere of those college chambers, that there is a certain faculty f mind—first developed es would seem a colleges—which accomplishes what- ever it chooses without any special pains- taking. For a time, your fall yourself into this very unfortunate hallucination ; you Cultivate it after the usual college fashign, by drinking a yast deal of strong coffee and whisky teddy—by writing a and by studying very late at night, with closed blinds. it costs you, however, more anxicty and hypocrisy than you could possibly have believed. You will learn that all the tra- ditions so current among very young men, that certain great characters have wrought their greatness by an inspi- ration, as it were, grow out of a sad mis- take. Sugar Cake.—One cup and a half of sugar, one halfa cup of butter, half 2 cup of sweet milk. one teaspoonful of seda, two of cream of \artar—roll thin and bake on buttered pans. Soda Cake.—Four eggs, one pint of sugar, one tea cup of butter, one cup of sweet milk, one quart of flour, one tea- spoonful of soda, two of cream of tartar. Sponge Cake —Take six eggs, one pint of flour one cup and a half of sugar, half a tcaspoonful of soda. one of cream cf tartar. Dissolve the soda in a table- spoonful of warm water, and mix the eream of tartar with the flour—stir briskly and bake half an hour. QUALIFICATIONS FOR AN APPRENTICE. The Culpepper (Va.)
