, i a EVENING STAR. Local Intelligence. “Parixe Tee Piper.’’—At the clove of an election contest, the triumphant party always feel disposed to honor their successful candi dates with a serenade; end hence, recently, the streets were, at night. enlivened by the sounds of instrumental melody. A young man, named George Watson, on Monday last, without consultation with any person, (‘acting on his own hook,”’ as be al- leges.) got up a subdscription, in order to pay the expenses of a ssrenaie, as the ee of the list expressed, to Dr Magruder, Dr. Miller, (respectively eleoted Aldermen from the First and Second Wa. ds.) and Mr. Roche, the Union candidate for re election as Uity Collector. He, with this view, called upon numerous friends of these gentlemen, collecting varions amounts from one te three dollars; but a con- tributor, suspecting that there was fraud in the young man’s movements, took the paper from him, and thus put an end toa further prosecution of the business. And the aforesaid contributor, who had promptly paid two dol- lars, threatened to have Watson prosecated, unless he should return the money assessedon the subscribers, which he did not do. Parsing by Justice Goddard’s office, on Sat- urday afternoon, we noticed a la-ge crowd in attendance; much good nature prevalent. There was youog Watson, arraigned bef>re the Just charged with obtaining money ender falze prevences. Mr. John Wilson be iog the prosecutor. Fourteen of the gentiemen who had sub- scribed were severally examined, to the fol- lowing effect: Justice—Did you subscribe to the serenade? Witness, (smiling)—Yes sir; I gave adollar. The young man cailed on me, showing a per and ssying that aserenade to Drs. Ma- jer, Miller, and otaers, was intended. {Laughter on part of epectaters | : Faniee_Did you give the mozey for the purpose of the serenade only? Musa fea, str; for no other purpose, Justice—Did the serenade tke place? Witne-s—No, sir. [{Lavghter } Justice—That will ao Anotuer witness was calied, and ho simi- Isrly testified, saying, in addition: “I sat up late that night, and indu-ed several others in the first ward to do the same, go as to take the band round to the residences of the persons to be serenaded.’ [Laughter } Fourteen witnesses, one after another, were examined; their evidence, as in the former ease, occasioning much merriment. The prisoner, on being iaterrogated, did not deny having collected money, but said all the subscribers did not pay, and that only twenty- six dollars came into his hands; and he pro- duced a witness, who said that, about eight o'clock, on Monday night. he heard Mr Wat ecn at Iron Hall, engaged in a conversation with Mr. Fi-cher, the leader of a band, as to emp'oying his musical for es for the serenade; but thatthe terms were too high, as Mr.-Wat- son informed Mr. Fischer The question was asked by one of the eub- seribers to another, “ When isthe serenade to take place?” and the answer was, “I don’t keow.’’ Many jokes were cracked, and the victims indulged in immoderate laughter at one snother’s expense. All but the prisonor were in high glee The j: stice required the young man to give bail in each of the fourtsen cases, in the sum of $100 ; in default of which he was committed to appear during, the present term of the crim- inal court. Cox. Jos Seittmetox.—It was announced in the Star, of Saturday sfternvon, that our esteemed and generally respsrted fellow- citizen, Col. Joe ington, was on the eve of departure for Europe, and we now have tc state that he lefi the Metrop yesterday afternoon, fer Boston, and at thst port he will leave the United States in the steamer Africa Everybody who reads newspapers and light literature, in Wasbisgton, (as well as thous- ands of visiters to this city, epeciaily during the seesiou of Congress,) is acquainted with oar friend, from whom the choicest and fresh- est supplies of the mental aliment are pro eured. His accommodating manrers and friendly disposition have endeared him to a large circle of acquaintances, ard given him & popularity, solid and unchanging, of which aay private individmal ough: to be proud He is @ gensrous, neble hearted, enterprising citizen and as such is, we repeat, highly and deservedly appreciated. We remember that, about fourteen year: ago, Joe came to this city as the cxrrier and collector for the Baltimore Sun; but, becom ing weary cf that business, he, after sx yeara’ of arduous ser ice, esiablished himeelf as a dealer in periodicals and fancy stationery, in the Odeon Building, where he bas continued, and will ¢ ntinue to carry on busines3, with, we trust. ample profit to himself; for he is ore of that class who deserves euccess, being actu- ated by honesty in his transactions with his fellow-man. Although Joe’s “‘tonguo is tipped with the brogue, a de’il a bit hasho of the biarney.” And it may here be statec to his credit, that, CrousaL Covrt —The June term of this Court—JudgeCrawford presiding—commenced this morning. Map witn Hissgir.—A man who bad boen a little too friendly with Captain Whisky, on Satardsy evening got to be so excited that he could find nothing to vent his anger upon but his own farniture. His conduct aroused the entire neighborsood of Thirteenth and F streo's—smashing a clock on the pavement, yelling and cursing, he seemed to be trying bis best to keep the neighbors aroused. A gentleman, residing in the vicinity, made bim- self a constable, ard arrested the offender, who was taken before Justice Clark, Pho managed togober him sufficiently to dismiss him on his promisetodo better. Persons under the command of the captain, and are urged by him to such behavior, had better desort his company. Firnexen and ALarvs —The alarm of fire on Saturday evening was caused by tho burn- iog of achimney in the Seventh Ward. We have never seen the firemen more active and Trompt than they were upon this occasion ‘The light from the chimney was calculated to deceive all who eaw it, and the firemen sup- posing it to be a burning house, acted with a deal of energy to be suon on the spot and afford assistacce to the sufferers. Our fire de- partment, though sm2!l. is efficient. [comscsicatED. “Tnomas C. Dony’s Staremsnr.—Mr. Editor: A communication signed T. C. Donn appears in the Organ of the 15th instan‘, in which he characterizes, as wholly incorrect, the state. ment of the Star, in rega.d te the action of the Fourth Ward Commissioners concerning cer- tain persons whore right to vote was awaiting the decision of the circuit court. The lan guage of his denis] fully substantiates every word’s of the Star’s statement, He says ‘the second ballot hox or hat was to be ased, pro- vided we received the docizion’of the court.” Now if the court decided tiaat certain persons were legal voters, and that their ballots ought to be received, what need was there for a sco- ond box? Was it that the commissioners. ar- rogating to themselves supreme ja:isdiction in the case, intended to receive the decision un- der protest? Grif. as they so loudly protested, they intended to act honestly and fairly, why did they distinguish between legal. naturai- ized and native votes in the manner of receiv- ing them? That they had anobject and deszzn in thus separating the votes. none can doubt. Mr Donn, etates the letier referred only tothe privileges of pardoned convicts. Does ho sup- pose the public co silly as to believe that Mr Bradley would insult a mactstrate, by instruc- ing him upon @ law familiar to every school- bey? Or does any one, converzant with Mr. Bvadley’s stylo, belisve that he would waste ink and paper in writing three paragraphs or sore, in elucidating a law co gonerelly known, when a3 many words convey his meaning? It is a libel upon the public undersanding to hint such athing Mr Donn partly beiieved 80 too, for he expresses a doubt whether he tead all that wasintheletter. But if he did, he bas no knowledge of any other subject be- ingtouchedinit. Is not tuis equivocation and vubt, evidence of certaiaty a3 to the truth of his own tement. He makes buta “ pocr out of it,’ and his communication will but serve to strengthen the sublic, es it hes me, in the absolute treth of the supposition that they bed @ design other than honesty and fair deal- ing, and that more was contained in that letter than applies to convicts Mr. Denn rolled the certificates up, and handed them to me. The investigation going on at Portland ie eliciting some curious statements. According to the testimony of Captain Charles E. Rob- orts, he and Mayor Dow and two or three men belonging to the Ritle Guard, went down into thecellar under tbe agency, on the night of the massacre, aud, by order of Dow, two of the men took guos. Dow wished to fire up through the gra:ings! Capt. R. understocd they went down for thet purposes. But as the cellar was dark, nud Capt. Roberts left before the others, bs cannot exy whether any person in the cellar fired through the gratings or not Ten BGroeck testified that he eaw the whole aflir from the window of the United States, and that the greater part of the erowd acemed to be spectators and Jo take no active part in the proceedin “ You gay but a small part of the crowd en. gaged in acts of violence—did they seem to be determined, cr was it mere boy’s play!” “*Befure the fring commenced it seemed to be boys play. He eaw the whole “riot,”’ and bis evidence makes the conduct of “the authorities” appear ridicu- lous as well as wicked After the firing was all over, dir. Begg says: “Neal Dow came out, wringing has hands, acd said,‘In the name of the State I ocm- mand you to disperse—if you don’t, I'll fireon you instantly.’ There were about half a it dozen standing round the door. Neal Dow followed me, wringing his hands. We backed off the sidewalk. A young man on the left of the door on the middle street he ordered to disperse. He said ho was a quiet citizen, and he didn’t see why he should be sent emer: On that Mr. Dow ordered him arrested in the name of theState. I walkedover to the other side of the street—a gentieman hailed me— said Mr. Dow was crazy. He had known him to be so for five years. [Laughter] I said if it was publickly known he might make that his plea—insanity. At that time Mr. Dow had given orders to ob: bayonets where two or three were seen standing on the sidewalks, to clear the streets, and they did so.”” Sineuzar Acomest in A Rirce Factory — The Hartford Courant, of the 15th inst., says : “A most singular and fatal accident occurred yeaterday afternoon at Sharp's Rifle Factory. Mr. Willis North, one of the workmen, was clipping off shavings from a bar or piece of steel, when one of the shavings, as it was clipped off, struck him, producing at the mo- ment bat little geoling of injury. After an examination of the places where the piece of steel struck him, he remarked that he be- lieved it had entered his body, but neither he nor any of hia fellow workmen suppored at the time that it was anything serious. In afew minutes he began to show signs which indi- cated that the ey was more serious than at first supposed. He was taken out of the building and laid upon the grass plat, where he soom became insensible, and shortly ex- pired. The small bit of steel must have en- tered his heart.
