EVENING STAR. Local Intelligence. Prervres —The a ‘mirers of the productions ¢f the painter's pencil have now the opportu nity of examioing, without charge, one of the largest ard most beautiful collections of oil Pictures ever brought to this city for public Sale—Mr. McGuire is the auctioneer. The exhibits them in the saloon over Farnbam’s bookstore, corner of Pennsylvania averne and Eleventh street. Many ladies and gentlemen were there this morning to witness the ele- gant display; the catalogue explaining the different subjects on the canvass, and the names of the various artists. The forest, the sea, lomestic life, and events recorded in the Scriptures and in profane history, kil - fally and imposingly di these representations the eve loves to linger. Befides, there arg heads of distinguished men, such as Bonaparte, the Duke of Marlborough, of Admiral Penn (the father of Wm Penn,) and others of eminence. Jacob and Rachel at the Well, the Death of Dido. Shylock and Jessica, Roadside Inn. Sam Weller, the Birth of Capid, View in Swi'zsrland, and the expul- sion of Sg:an, are among the mapy truly ad mirable paintings. ° A Commotion.—A horse at tho Centre Mar- ket, this morning, forgetting the propriety due to his condition, and oblivious of a decent respect for the human beings a:eombled atthe great mart, was guilty of the cifence of mak ing in unceremontious departure; and, on a proaching alamp-post—whether accidentally or by design was not satisfactori!y determined —linked the wheel of the b: gzy to which he was attached to the aforesaid iron upright; smashing the glass ia the lamp by the violent concussion. Itis almost needless to say there was a sudden, alarmiog movement of market baskets and tin krtiles; the carriers of those articles of domostic necessity; each for him self and herself, hurrying out of the way of danger. The horse by bis extraordinary per- Sormancer, broke loose fiom his gearing, but was secrred before hecompleted 2 sories of feats which might have resulted in more se- rious consequences To show the cifest of the bad exemple, westate that other horses, be- coming restive, began to chafe in their straps, and bad tobe firmly hetd to prevent them combining for a stampece Tas June Term of the Criminal Coeri will becommenced on Monday nex: Among the cases which will probably be tried, is that of a gentleman of Buffalo, who, ceveral years age, was charged with obtaining money under false pretences from « banking-house of this city: and of George Razlen, « necro, who, a short time since. murdered a man rassed Fits patrick. Judging from tho past, the usual number of cares of petty Isrceny, assaults, and assaults and batteries, will, at the ensa- ing term, engage the attenti n of the court. | [tis to be regretted that there is uo tribunal in Waehington which admits of the last named el f offencos being summarily adjadicated; but we trust that this defect will be remedied by the improvement of the laws; provision for which was made by the last Congress, and ea which work the codi 2 Dow engaged. A Youse Wowas, on Tuesday evening, mys- teriously left the re-idence of her parents; since which time no intelligeces has been re- esived concerning her Intense, solisitude is, of course, manifested by them. Taxe HEED To Yorn Ways —We have heard Bumerous complaints of buildi being left on the sidewalts, and of persons meeting with trivial accidents in consequence. Porta oly, they discovered their danger in time to avoid afull length measuroment of their persons on the pavexent. A momoct later, and we might save to record a broken lim or dislo eated joint, instead of merely caliing attention to building nuisances. — Taar Puxr.—The pump on the south-eest corner of Twelfth street and Pe osylvania avenue. besides runuinz a rivulet at all times over the street, is ac:ual!> umbling to pieces. Menp your Wars —The improvement of the moral and eocial condition of cur race is an end eagerly sought by those who entertain the old fashioned idea, that man needs such improvement; that it is to be attained through the helping aid of contrivances for that pur- pose; aod that threugh the application of those aids in detail. the amelioration of the mass isto be accomplished This notion ap- ears to be so general that it manifests itself in almost every reletion of lifs, and has per- vaded our legislative halls so that our ser- vante do not scruple to avail thomselves of the benefit of this popular doctrine, and impose en each of us owning property a sacrifice of a portion of it for what they are pleased to term “*the public good’? Our city fathers have taken up the notion and require of every min to meke “the pathways smooth and straight” bofore bis door merely for the convenienceyf others It isuseiess, probably, toconten with & prejadice so deeply rooted, and which mili- tates so strongly. in the latter particular, with that perfect freedem of action, in relation to a man’s owe, which, to some extent, is one of the cardinal doctrines of “ Young America ;”’ but as a laweabiding man, the nesessity is felt for a rigid and exuct enforcemen’ of the re quisitions of every existing statute, and hence we hope that actil moro perfect freedom is allowed in this perticular to all, you will cail the attention 0: the proper authorities to the condition of the footway ia front of the firct two-story brick on the it side of Fourteenth street, north of F, whose shocking condition is such as not to offend thp eye, but to seriously incommode those who are gompelled to pass that way, particularly the aged or infirm, all of whoin are entitled to the benefit of the lx whilst it remains unrepealed It would be a decided improvement, if all the broken bats were rouioved and pedestrians allowed to walk on the smoon instead of wending their way of a dark night over buigs and ruts, to the manifest rick of life or limb Qn A Corser.
